Idea for new Historical league, inagural dispersal draft, start date 1989!!
So I posted a couple days ago that I'm looking to get back into a sim league or two and I didn't get any responses (I posted on the board, and also visited links and emailed commissioners). So I have had a bit to think on an idea I've had for a while:
A little about me: I bought my first pack of baseball cards in 1988. I grew up in L.A. and I was never a big baseball fan. My father had to force me to watch the 88 world series. He wasn't a fan either, but he was so impressed by the team that he thought it might teach me something (I was 10 at the time). I don't remember much from the games other than being forced to stand during the anthem, Orel Hershiser being Superman, and Kirk Gibson hobbling out for one of the greatest home runs in Dodger history. I immediately bought a pack of 1988 Topps baseball cards the next day for .45 hoping to pull the Gibson. Instead I got some schmuck named Jose Canseco and traded it to a buddy for Gibson. And so started my collecting of baseball cards. In 1989 when Ken Griffey came up with the Mariners, a company named Upper Deck released an ultra premium brand of cards and changed the hobby of baseball card collecting forever. I will never forget pulling the Ken Griffey Jr rookie card out of a 2.00 pack of baseball cards (at the time an incredible price to pay). THis league will start with a historical 1989 Roster set with an inagural dispersal draft so that everyone will have a shot at their favorite players of the era. In principle the idea is this: 32 teams using MLB rosters 1989 set with historical rookies each ammy draft SIM 3x per real life week, 1-2 weeks game time per sim League will not start without an owner for each team Live inagural draft with draft lists from those that can't attend We all know the challenges facing a new league. Inactive owners, owners who grow bored with a bad team, bickering, and the dreaded collusion. In an effort to help with a lot of that I propose: A)2.00 annual dues from each owner. This will go toward purchasing a trophy and possibly T shirt for the World Series champion and if there is money left over possily a concilation trophy for the runner up 2.00? WHy would anyone pay that? Well first of all it's a small amount. You throw that much away on a daily basis, even 14 year olds that constantly complain about having no money. Also, even though it's a small amount, it screens out those that would split after 2 weeks, and if they do decide to split, we'll hopefully find an owner to take their spot and the money still stays toward the trophy/tshirt pool. It will also hopefully keep the maturity level at least moderatly high by doing this. B)Weekly lineup requirements. Although I won't require you own the game, I honestly don't see how you'll win without it. It's like playing baseball without a glove. However, if you decide to step on to the field without the equipment, you'll be welcomed so long as you pony up your dues and stay active. By active it means that once every real time week you will have to send in a lineup or a note stating you want no changes. There will be a few other things, like responses to trades/etc. but you get the idea. C)Democratic proccess. The first season will be a bit draconian while the league goes through its inevitible growing pains, but hopefully by season 2-3 we will hold an annual or bi-annual vote for league offices, including commissioner, and AL and NL presidents. I hate nothing more than a league run by a guy who refuses to listen to input or someone on a power trip. HOpefully we can cultivate this league into something really great. What do you think? I have other ideas, big and small, but hockey practice for the 8 year old is in 30 minutes and it takes her 20 minutes to get ready. Feel free to email Mikecouil@aol.com or just post here with feedback or interest level. |

3 of us thus far
I got an email from a very enthusiastic potential owner plus this post. That makes 3.
The person who emailed suggested being willing to cut it down to 28 or even 24 teams. I'd certainly consider that if it's all we can get. Keep the emails and posts coming. |

Don't see it happening
Unfortunately the interest just doesn't appear to be there.
