SO49 1950 World Series is set...
The Summer of '49 Baseball League is wrapping up their second season of play (1950) and the World Series is set:
The mighty Cleveland Indians of Herb DeSpain have captured their second pennant in as many tries during the reign of manager George "The Bull" Uhle...the Indians feature a ferocious offense centered on SS Lou Boudreau and 2B Joe Gordon, corners Ken Keltner and Al Rosen, and OF's Larry Doby and Allie Clark. 22-game winner Gene Bearden heads up the AL's best pitching corps, featuring Bob Lemon, Bob Feller, super-youngster Mike Garcia and bullpen ace Russ Christopher (42 saves). The Indians, with 106 wins on the year, are heavy favorites, as they were in 1949 -- when they lost to the scrappy Boston Braves in 5 games. This year's opponent is Jeff Anderson's Brooklyn Dodgers, managed by Leo Durocher. The Bums were tremendous down the stretch in 1949, earning a one-game playoff with the Braves for the NL Pennant (which they ultimately lost). In 1950, they took the top spot in early summer and never looked back. Durocher's boys run roughshod over the basepaths, they steal a ton and when they aren't running, they are clubbing balls out of the yard. Sluggers Gil Hodges (41 HR) and Duke Snider are the big guns in a lineup that also features Jackie Robinson (57 steals). A trio of 20-game winners heads up the pitching corps: Preacher Roe(21), Dizzy Trout (24 wins to lead the league) and Rex Barney (21). Sophomore Bobby Shantz is the ace of the bullpen -- and the best relief man in either league (42 saves, 1.15 ERA). The series will be called live on Wednesday at 6PM CST over AIM: NMC1979...any visitors are more than welcome!!!!!
