Frank Thomas a Blue Jay?

Just heard this on Sportsnet. I am stunned. 2yr/$20M

Don't know what to think.

I think Ricciardi likes to spend lots of money.

Yeah, I find it unbelievable that $10M was needed. I mean who was offering $9M?

I think Ricciardi singlehandedly wants to drive up the free agent market two years in a row.

Don't get me wrong, I like Frank Thomas, but this would be another high-risk signing at a hgh price for the Jays. This team has the potential to be good, or a big bust if any or all of AJ Burnout, BJ Ryan and the Big HURT get, well, hurt.

Frank thomas can still hit. I think 20MM for two years is a reasonable risk for the potential gain.

It's the Yankees fault

I wouldn't have guessed this one. I can see someone giving him that kind of money, but I wouldn't have guessed it would be the Jays.

I would've prefered them using some of that money to re-sign Wells.

I'm sure the A's offer didn't even come close to that, so the Blue Jays can have him. Damn. That is a risky, risky deal.

To be fair, Frank's only going to be taking home, what, $2M a year after the income taxes he'll have to pay to Canada? And then, is this deal in Canadian money? If so I'm sure he'll be taking home less than the major league minimum.

And his inevitable trip to the DL will probably last twice as long because of all that socialized health care.

I'm going to laugh very hard when the Canadian dollar passes the US dollar in value. It was inching close to breaking even, but then the US market got high on the fumes of the Democrat takeover. As soon as that euphoria wears off and the market remembers that there are two more years of the Bush administration, the course to Canadian domination will resume.

The more i think of this deal, the less I like it. I just think there is too much risk here for $10M per year. Given that baseball prospectus, in their five year forecasts, predicted that The Big Hurt would be retired by 2008, I'm not confident that Frank will provide anything near worth $10M performance.

I'm not sure how this makes sence if the Jays want to keep Wells... and that they deperatly need help for Roy in a starting pitcher.

Apparently this deal isn't as close to being done as some are reporting. I've heard talk that Beane might want to try to match the offer.
