Matt Bryant is my hero!

A lot of people hate homer calls, but this one is classic and I am not a Bucs fan in anyway. I just love the pure excitement in his voice. He's just as excited as any Tampa fan listening and that's so much better than the boring call from Fox that day. Well, maybe not if you're an Eagles fan.

Matt Bryant 62-Yard Field Goal to beat Eagles

That is about what the excitement was in the bar I was at.

"THE BUCS WIN THE OLD FASHIONED WAY; WITH A 62 YARD FIELD GOAL!"

Would have been awesome if he'd said "It is... GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD" and held the word on for as long as possible like a South American football commentator.

Whenever we scored goals in gym class (be it football, football americano, hockey, even softball), we'd lift our shirts and scream GOL! in that fashion.

Anyone that leads to the defeat of the Eagles is OK in my book.

It was even sweeter to see it was an ex-Giant doing them in.

This FG was probally the best one in NFL history imo. He was kickin into the wind..the other two long ones by Jason Elam and whoever the guy was both had the win at there backs to help em..

What is the longest FG? I've heard a mixture between 62 and 63, no one around here seems to know.

63 Tom Dempsey, New Orleans vs. Detroit, Nov. 8, 1970
Jason Elam, Denver vs. Jacksonville, Oct. 25, 1998

Not quite. He only had half of his kicking foot, and used a special shoe on it to kick the ball.

From what I understand, there was quite a bit of controversy about it (the shoe) because of the way it was constructed.

On that note, how exactly would one kick a field goal with one leg, let alone 63 yards?

Yeah, there is a rule now that all equipment has to be "normal" even if the person wearing it has a body part that isn't. Lots of folks thought Dempsey's anatomy and equipment gave him an advantage in kicking.

The amazing thing is to watch the video--since goal posts were at the front of the end zone back then, he kicked it from the other team's 37 yard line.

FWIW, this happens to be my #1 "WTF were they thinking?" sport-related rule. Well, not rule, per se, but... still, how many guys had to break their something by running into the thing before they thought "hey, let's move the giant metal pole from the middle of the field"?

My stupidest equipment thing is football helmets not being padded on the outside.
