A-Rod In Plane Accident

He's fine, but talk about timing:

BURBANK, Calif. -- A private jet, carrying Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and six others, overran a runway at Bob Hope Airport on Friday and was brought to a halt by an arresting system.

"I spoke to Alex. He's fine," agent Scott Boras said.

None of the seven people aboard were injured, federal officials said.

The Gulfstream G-II carried five passengers and two crew members, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement from Washington, D.C.

The twin-engine jet was stopped by the Engineered Materials Arresting System, a 200-foot-long stretch of pavement injected with air bubbles designed to collapse under the weight of an aircraft as large as a Boeing 737 jet traveling as fast as 50 knots, airport spokesman Victor Gill said.

"It came to a pretty quick stop," Gill said.

Damage to the aircraft was minor, the board said.

An NTSB official was sent to investigate the 11:35 a.m. incident. The board planned to retrieve the cockpit voice recorder, gather radar data and evaluate how well the arresting system worked.

The aircraft, registered to a Wilmington, Del., corporation, approached from the west and landed on one of the airport's two runways. The runway was closed and reopened at 3:30 p.m. after the plane was moved, Gill said.

Bob Hope Airport, in the San Fernando Valley north of downtown Los Angeles, is used by seven airlines and private aircraft.

A Southwest Airlines jet skidded off a runway and crashed through a concrete barrier at the airport in 2000, injuring 43 passengers and the captain. The flight from Las Vegas went too fast and descended at a steep angle when it landed, according to a NTSB report. That jet ended up on a city street near a gas station.

Jeter would have pulled that plane out of its skid.

Perhaps all the Yankees are trying to kill themselves.

Wow, just horrible. So terrible. My heart goes out. I'm so devastated, it's such a shame, he was so young, so virile. I will pray for him, you should pray for him. I mean add him to your prayer list, and by prayer list I mean the sort like when you were in college you made on dot matrix printers, where you had to tear the perforated feed off when you were all done, and your professors were like "What are you doing using dot matrix for your prayer lists when we have laser printers on campus? No more dot matrix for prayer lists." I remember when I got to school and they had a laser printer in the chem lab that wasn't protected by computer lab staff, I could print prayer lists out in Times New Roman all day long, and I did that once actually, I kept thinking of new people to pray for, all day long, and every time I added a name I printed out a revised list. I would have prayed for ARod then, too, but that was 1991 and I had not heard of him yet. You know who else I would have prayed for in 1991? David Koresh. Kurt Cobain. Rodney the d00d who wanted us all to get along. Rodney King. O.J.! I definitely would have prayed for the Juice if I had known he would hack his wife's head off. I already was praying that Dan Aykroyd would stop making movies. This is so sad, what a shame. And all the Pakistanis with no winter shelter. I will not listen to anyone who has anything nonprayerful to say about ARod. You should use laser printers not dot matrix.

Steinbrenner will now come up with a way for players to transport not involving planes so that he can not have any more players risk injury

I know, I thought there was some sort of 3 hour rule on not posting news stories.

At least that's what I was told when I posted something. Double standards or what...

Heart was in throat. I want to trade the guy for Dontrelle Willis or somebody like that, not lose him in a plane crash. Maybe his brush with death will change his mind about leaving NY (something about the quality or shortness of life), perhaps ultimately ending up with Piniella in Chicago.
