Post Comparison of Stat Dbase Utils

I haven't used any of the various utilities for this purpose, but I've been reading about those by Wallman, Joe, and Iatric. Anybody care to state which they feel is best and why? I want to add one of these to my game, and am leading toward Wallman's.

By the way--2 side notes about these:

1) Would love to see something like one of these added to v5.

2) Is it true that using one of these utilities won't help "catch" stats from previously-played seasons (i.e., previous seasons' stats from ongoing league are lost)?

Don't forget Jeff Cato's, that one is the most work to run but overall probably provides the most info. I am not familiar with Joe's util yet but the Wallman and IatricSB utils are both very good and both fairly easy to run.

Thanks-I hadn't seen it before. Just searched, and it looks great. Anyway, still interested in various opinions of each of these (including Jeff's)....

They aren't lost if you have copies of the past season files. I always save my last zip before I press proceed to next season..

From my experience, Wallman's is easier to use and the files produced are about half those provided by Iatrics.

This makes a hell of a difference when uploading to a site.

I like using both Wallman's and Iatric's utilities. They each have distinct qualities I like. Check out my site if you want to see what each can do in a basic manner. The main page has a link to Iactric's pages on the bottom of the page.

you'll run into a lot less errors using Iatric's because it parses from a database made from the league files. wallman's routinely will give you errors if you do not use 2 leagues, have awards awarded, or have players with a space in their surname. but i think development has stalled on Iatric's, because of the release of the latest report generator by pierre.

They were a couple threads where windows 98 users were getting errors running Iatric's files.

I could never figure out a workaround, so I've been using Wallman's ever since.

Personally, despite the extra work, I find Cato's to be the best of the bunch. Plus, I think it's the only one that records playoff stats.

I don't know about the others, but we have been using Jeff Cato's util for a long time and the more I see it the more I like.

What makes Jeff's utility harder to use? What are its advantages over the others? I hear playoff stats, but anything else? Better/easier sorting? More stats?

There is more manual data entry with Jeff's utility, which makes it harder to use.

The advantages? The big thing is playoff stats. I also enjoy the positional chart (basically a listing of the starters over a teams history), I like the look of it more, and other little things like that.

I am pretty sure that Wallman's latest release now includes playoff statistics.

Mine has always had post season info and now Wallman's does also (I use both on my web site). Development on the new version has stalled due to a heavy work load with my job, but I hope to continue on it someday soon. It will use the files created with the ORG utility. As for 98 users, to my knowledge, nobody has had trouble running my utility. Their problem was in getting Pierre's CSV Reporter to work so there isn't anything I can do to help them since the CSV Reporter is not my utility.

Wow, lots of talk about me around here! Thanks for the positive comments about my program. I have good news and bad news. Good news first, since the bad isn't really that bad.

As mentioned my program was a little difficult to use. I've made some sweeping changes that make it alot easier. For example, it is now an honest-to-goodness program and not just an Access database. It still uses an Access database, but the program will install the necessary drivers if you don't have Access.

Second, it will now read OOTP generated HTML files to get All-Star players and team stats instead of manually entering them. You still have to enter the Award winners, but that's only 6 names, plus you have to manually enter Gold Glove winners anyway.

Third, the HOF screen now allows you to view a player's career stats as well as induct them in to the Hall.

Okay, now the bad news. First, not really that bad, but you still need to use CSVReporter to make each team data file. I played around with using ORG, but it doesn't export post-season stats, so I shelved that update until ORG has that. Once you get use to doing it, only takes about 1 minute per team, so that's not so bad.

The really bad news, though, is that this would've been available weeks ago if I hadn't signed up with such crappy web hosting company. I've been waiting for them to get their act together, but appearantly, they aren't going to. So as soon as I decide on another cheap, but reliable host, I'll post it so a few people can test it out before releasing it to all.

Oh, this is kind of bad, too. For those using the older version, you'll have to start over again since the database is now based on Access 2000 instead of 97. Plus there has been numerous changes to the db structure.

Anyway, those interested in testing it, let me know. I'd perfer people that are already using it, since you are familiar with it already.

Thanks!

Where can I get Cato's util. I've read a lot about it, but can't recall seeing a link posted.
