Deleting Messages
Is there any way to delete messages? I think this is what is slowing my game down...with 4 leagues, plus minors, that's A LOT of messages. And all my major leagues have messages saved for 8 years.
If you CAN'T delete these, that should be an option in the future, as I read none of them. |

The messages are stored in text at:
C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\OOTP Baseball 2006\data\saved_games\1920AA.lg\messages Give it a try, delete them. (Back the league up first). Report back. "Getting Married October 8. Will this mark the end of my OOTP playing days?" Get in touch with your attorney and sign a prenuptial OOTP agreement and you will be fine.

You are the man!!! I did that, and the game loaded up 10 times as quick as before. Of course I'm going to have to do that every couple years, but it worked. Thanks so much! |

One additional point. You may want to also delete your message.dat file at the same time. If you don't, then the message.dat file appears to create an equal amount of empty message files as it had before when you start the game. They're empty, so they are not uploading any data, but the game has to address them all upon start up. Deleting the message.dat file forces the game to create a new one with no message file references. Looks cleaner in the game, too, because you don't see empty message boxes on your home pages. Now, it should go without saying: YMMV. So of course back things up first. One more hint: You may want to look into some of those news\txt files that you may not need either . . . |

Does anyone have a full list of stuff that can be safely deleted?
Seems that would be quite helpful. |

1) did not delete the message.dat file as well as the messages in the message folder, and 2) deleted the entire news folder which includes two subfolders, html and txt. Within those are two crucial subsubfolders, news\html\images (which contains logos) and news\txt\players (which contains player history). So, I hope you took my final piece of advice which was to BACK UP your saved game folder before you did any of this. FYI, this is a note that I wrote to myself: FILES THAT ARE SAFE TO DELETE TO IMPROVE GAME PERFORMANCE In the saved game folder: messages - delete entire contents of this folder; NOTE: ALSO DELETE MESSAGE.DAT. news\html - delete contents of all folders except images; do not delete the index file. news\txt - delete contents of leagues and teams folders; do not delete anything from players folder. The html folder generally just contains html files that the game has generated; reports that you looked at, box scores, etc. All of which you can do without, IMO (except logos). The txt folder contains history text files, all of which you can do without, IMO (except player histories). BUT, YOUR PREFERENCE MAY BE DIFFERENT. For example, in here are transaction and injury logs from years gone by, who cares? There are also team news files in here that you may want to keep, however, so you might want to look through this folder and its subfolders before you delete anything. BTW, usually, we are talking about deleting the contents of folders, not the folders themselves. I would leave the folder structure in place, even if some of them are empty. Well, I'm thinking of self-banishment from this board. I really hope you backed up your game, Mattymo. |

Have you noticed the game saving game logs even though it's not set to save them?
I had around 17,000 game logs in the news\txt\league folder. I've backed them up and deleted them, but am currently copying my league file elsewhere before I start to sim and see what happens. |

I can't stress strongly enough that although we try to help each other on these boards, most of us are not experts and the advice that we give may be faulty, in that what worked for one may not necessarily work for another. That is why "YMMV" and "BACK UP" are in large bold font. Anyone who goes ahead and does things at the suggestion of well-meaning but possibly misinformed posters like me without heeding the first and following the second are asking for trouble. That being said, my game is running fine. |

![]() I learned long ago to backup things, since I usually play around and screw things up pretty good. These days I like to let others do that first, and reap the benefits.

But then again, such a person should not be deleting stuff without knowing what he's doing or having backed up first (not saying Mattymo is like that, however). So, let the tinkerer beware! As far as suing me, start by looking up "1998 Yankees" in the phone book. I'm sure I am listed therein.

I've got 25 years so far with the full compliment of leagues in the pre-starts, so that number is quite easy to imagine.
As far as the lawsuit, well, I'll just start with Steinbrenner and work my way down, I'll get to you eventually!

Besides, my defenses are my erudite posts, which included appropriate warnings absolving myself of liability, and my own game which is running flawlessly. I rest my case and celebrate my victory.
