Is 6.5 worth having a look at?

I have bought OOTPB 2006 earlier this year and am getting on ok with it with updated logos and rosters etc. However I keep hearing mention of its predecessor 6.5. Is it worth getting this and am I missing out on something incredible if i don't? And if the answer is yes, get it, what updates would you suggest I looked at?

My answer would be no.

You seem to be enjoying V2006 for the most part, and if you play 6.5 for a bit you will find yourself wanting certain features only in 6.5 to be included in V2006.

By the same token, when you play 6.5, you will not enjoy it was much because you will long for certain features only available in V2006.

However, if you aren't enjoying 2006, then 6.5 is an amazing game to play. It is still the best baseball sim on the market IMO.

I personally think 6.51 is a better game. I actually miss the features in 6.51 that are not in 2006 more than the other way around.

I have been playing with the OOTP series for four years now. IMO used in conjunction with Catobase 6.51 is the better game!

I have 2K6 but have not played it as much since I play with fictional leagues that I begin in historical eras. There is no way to make leagues inactive/active so starting a fictional league is a pain in the (fill in the blank!).

Maybe 2k6 will around after all but 6.51 has features I like such as sound, reports, etc.

Well...6.5 isn't as detailed...and the setup options aren't as plentiful....but it's easier to navigate, easier to get into, and easier to play and understand...probably because there isn't as much to do so thus its simpler (I don't mean in a negative bad way...its a good kind of simpler.

I'm playing both...I like them both....I've seen enough of 2006 to know the rewrite will be worth it IF they listen to their fans and the community for the next version. I suspect they will and OOTP 2007 and beyond will be better for it.

For me....I like having both...but it sounds like you have OOTP 2006. OOTP 6.5 requires you to have OOTP 6 installed (actually just the eLicense part) so if you went that way...you didn't already have OOTP 6 you would need to buy both OOTP 6 and 6.5 to get 6.5 to work.

I guess I'm torn with what to tell you but I'll put it this way. If you aren't frustrated with OOTP 2006 than you should not buy OOTP 6.5. If you are....than it might be a better experience for you.

In the end I went ahead and bought it. The verdict? So pleased I did. OOTP 2006 was bemusing to me-it seemed geared towards editing and customising-which is great, but only if you have the solid base already there. The main problem for me with OOTP 2006 was the confusing layout-there were far too many buttons and levers cluttering up the screen, so you were always struggling to navigate or being distracted by this and that.

OOTP 6.5 is like a breath of fresh air. To go with it I of course got Lahman installed and Catobase as well. It was so simple to just fire it up, link up lahman and get stuck into a 1969 league just like that. Once I had got some photos and logos in there (also a doddle compared to OOTP 2006) and updated the skins a bit it was just great simple fun to play. Sure there might be bits missing that are in OOTP 2006 but nothing fundamental enough to spoil the game. All the stuff that makes it fun, which is ultimately the point in having a game, is there in abundance. I am loving managing the Giants in 1969 and think I will continue to do so. Frankly I quite wish that I had bought this before OOTP 2006 tbh, and I cannot see any way that I would consider looking at 2007 if I am still getting as much enjoyment from this next year.

Oh my, yes. I've been playing OOTP since the first version (1999?) and the Catobase is the main reason I'm still playing. My online league has nearly 30 years of history: http://www.snowballhidalgo.com/catobase/index.html

I really should upgrade from 6.12 to 6.5.

Add another vote for Catobase. Without it, I probably would've upgraded to OOTPB2006. But Catobase increases my interest considerably in my fictional league, and I'm not quite ready to give it up or start up a new league.

You should. The $9.95 was worth it.

It's not even the price that's keeping me from it.
My concern has been my Catobase and my current league being messed up with an upgrade to 6.5. Maybe I'm just misinformed and everything goes smoothly after the upgrade?

Not only will the upgrade go smoothly, everything in the league will work BETTER after the upgrade.

Plus if some of your owners want to stay on the old version they can and their imports will still work.

Though the old owners will see different ratings and contract offers will differ between the 2 versions as well from what I recall.

I like 6.5 but was hesitant to get it because the only two features that I felt were worth it were the 7 day lineups and the milestones page. But Catobase has issues with the ltrans.txt file in version 6.0/6.12 and you need to put a line between the trade transactions. In 6.5 this was fixed, all you need to do is to rename the ltrans.txt to ltrans.sav and then rename the ltransall.txt to ltrans.txt. This has worked well for me.

For me 6.5 is worth it just for the time savings at end of season when using catobase.
