HoF or Not: Fred McGriff

Probably been done before, but here's another. Here's his player card at BP.

Keep in mind the average WARP3 for a HoF 1B is 98.2. He has a JAWS of 73.75, and the average for a HoF 1B is 70.7. He also has a pretty cool nickname given to him by the one and only Chris Berman! That has to count for something!

p.s. hi eriq say hi to jay for me thx

He really seems like the classic borderline guy. He had a couple of excellent seasons and lots of very good ones. I think he falls just short.

Does anyone think that he will also be hurt in the voting by the fact that his career ended with a whimper instead of a bang?

If voters has long term memory issues then yes.

So yes.

As for whether he's a HOF ya he's borderline. He's short on the big marks (seven of 500HR, roughly 500 on hits, and .13 on BA), that would almost guarentee him a spot in the Hall. He'll need a weak class to get in.

Actually you got it the opposite way. Because voters only have short term memories, so it doesn't matter if your career peaked early or late. It's all going to be "a long time ago" for the voters anyway. That's why counting stats and stuff like how many awards a player had won are important. You don't need memory for those. You just need to look them up.

On the other hand, specific heroic performances are often forgotten.

In McGriff's case, it does hurt him to have an early peak though. He started hitting 30+ homeruns a year before the homerun explosion, but still only hit 30+ homeruns a year after everyone else started hitting a lot of homeruns. That makes his numbers not as impressive as opposed to someone like Palmeiro, who became a homerun hitter right along with everyone else.

I'm saying no, but it's borderline.

I think he's exactly who people are talking about when the phrase "Hall Of Very Good" gets thrown around.

I dunno, I've never thought of him as a hall of famer but looking back over his career I'd probably put him in (assuming the long list of first basemen I'd put in ahead of him gets in too). 5 excellent seasons and a bunch of average-to-very-good ones puts him ahead of most hall of famers.

He was a great player. I'll be happy for McGriff if he is elected.

I like McGriff as a person more than I like McGwire as a person, but I think both fall just short, numbers-wise, of my ideal HoF.

In your Ideal HOF, which 1B would be in the Hall of Fame?

No way!
But if he had hit 7 more homeruns I would elect him no problem

What numbers are you looking at? 583 home runs by any measuring stick is pretty worthy, if you ask me.

McGriff's number match up almost equally with Willie Stargell's. Both won 1 MVP, McGriff won 1 WS and Stargell 2. Stargell had 800 less ABs as well.

But if Stargell is in, McGriff should get in or fall just short. He'll be close.

Bagwell, Thomas, Palmeiro, Eddie Murray, Rod Carew would be no-doubters... McCovey and Stargell are similar to McGwire and McGriff: on the bubble.

Nicknames given by Chris Berman should not make it to the Hall.

I think he is Hall of Fame worthy but I do not believe he will be elected. By 2009 some of the recent 500 club will start to get looked at. It is sad because when McGriff had his string of 30 HR seasons it was the longest at the time. Now 30 HR in a season is a given for about 20 guys each year. Therefore the accomplishment will actually be lost in the modern day numbers.
