Annoying - minor league player movement
When managing a minor league team. I get players promoted and demoted daily. usually the same guys up and down over an over. Barring injury, shouldn't the rosters stay relatively stable unless a guy is just tearing things up or sucking? I know right before the draft (if in season) movement should occur to make room for draftees, and the september callup period should create a lot of change, but some of the minor moves should go away.
Also, having a playoff minor league team stripped in September irks me. I wish that parent club would let us finish before grapping our best players. |

As a fan of a minor league team that is close to me, the September callups are a part of the game... more championships are lost then than any other time.. Some organizations are good about trying to help a team win championships, others just want their players.
How is this long term now, noble? Is this still a weighty issue, or has it just been in spurts during the season? You have some data we could look at?

I know that the september callups are going to happen, I actually like it, as a minor league manager, you'd just have to be ready for it. What is annoying is that during the season, everyday, players are re-assigned up and down which makes your lineups invalid after the first transaction.
looking back over the season, is doesn't seem to be a big deal, it is noticable when you are playing the day-to day part of being a minor league manage. I will try to find some good examples in my current league and post them. |

I have just started the 2007 season and randomly picked Cincinnati to review.
I would think that the AI should just leave him at one place and then evaluate performance after a month, before the draft, etc... here is an example of the movement: Look at D. Minor league management is no fun because the game can't realize a difference between a human manager and an AI GM. Put differently, it doesn't care if the human is managing any teams, and will go on its merry way simulating its own baseball world.
What this comes down to is that you end up playing by the AI's rules, rather than by how baseball would work in real life. The AI does do a good job of approximating a real baseball world, but it misses out in dealing with the details that make the game fun. Frequent, repeated, non-negotiable, unannounced roster moves at the minors level is one such frustration. This may help the AI to run its baseball universe, but it really sucks the fun out of the game. You're just constantly re-doing lineups and depth charts over and over again as the AI arbitrarily shuffles rosters. If being a minor league manager is to be a serious gaming option, then work will need to be done to adjust the AI so it understands that this is how the human user wants to play. Much as how there's been a lot of tweaking to make OOTPB useable for historical simulation (something for which the game really wasn't intended for in the very beginning), the same kind of work needs to go into making managing the minors a viable effort. Currently, minors management is OOTPB's heavy-handed way of punishing you for screwing up. |

I can post reports and league files if you really want to see them, but as Twelvefield was hinting, the best way to see how difficult it is for a minors manager is to just try it.
Create a default universe and sign on with a minor league club as the manager. Don't worry about playing out games, just sim day to day and see how often your lineups are messed up. Like I said before, th overall effect is very nice, looking at a hall of famer's history you see a nice progression through the minors and into the bigs, but when you play daily it can really get to you. |
