World Championship Dominoes
Since its on ESPN, I'm putting this in Talk Sports.
WTF. Seriously, WTF. I've watched this for two days and decided I could write a computer program that could probably win this "tournament". Many moves are non-decisions, you only have 7 dominoes, and you know every domino is in play with one of the four players. How is this challenging enough to be on TV?

$90,000 bones (ha, ha, ha)
But, seriously, the branching factor for this game has to be many many orders of magnitude smaller than Chess, where computers can already compete with the best of the best. Now, obviously they'd probably just ban computers or hand held devices at the tournament, but it'd be fun to do, likely a weekend project for me and my roommate and we'll bust it out on Yahoo games to see how it does.

psst-this was done months ago.
Dominos is huge in latin america-if I recall, this telecast was very popular in Mexico when I was down there. I imagine they saw the ratings down there and figured it'd be a good time filler here. At least as interesting as poker. |

You know.....once the World Series of Poker became a mild hit, you know some shirt and tie at ESPN has been wracking his brain for a follow up unorthodox niche hit and I bet this was one of the ideas.

With no World Cup on ESPN 2 today, they're running an obstacle course marathon....Awesome.

Scroll down to 1/30/2006 and there is the description of the Viking: Obstacle Course show. Japan got a lot of these shows, specially designed challenges instead of fixed form competitions.
