Mac version- won't launch
Mac 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4
512 MB DDR SDRAM OS X 10.4.6 The game will not launch. Clicking OOTP 2006 icon launched the purchase program (there didn't appear to be anyway to launch the program as a "demo", but I was going to purchase it anyway, so not a big problem). Completed the purchase, received a receipt and an email confirmation. Subsequently, clicking the OOTP icon does nothing but a brief launch animation (the Icon jumps). But nothing happens. At first, it would appear in the dock as a running program, but it would not react. Now it just does its animation and nothing. I have reinstalled, same problem. I have re-downloaded a "fresh" copy of the demo, and re-installed twice, same problem. Any insight would be much appreciated. -Scot |

Have you tried updating to the 10.4.7 release this week and testing again? Just a shot in the dark but it might help.

Actually, this doesn't work either. Tried it with a new install as well. When I click on the OOTP2006 icon, I get the software delivery wizard with the options to "start" or "cancel". Cancel just exits the program, start launches the purchase program. Opting for "cancel" at anypoint just quits the wizard. I'll try updating to 10.4.7 -Scot |

I would try deleting the preference file(s) for OOTP. The "bouncing icon, then nothing" is a common symptom of a corrupt preference file. I can't figure out where it's stored, though. It's not in the preferences folder inside the user's library folder. Maybe it's in the OOTP folder somewhere.
Marc or Steve, where is the OOTP preference file located (the file(s) that contain the preferences, options, settings, etc. that are loaded when the game first starts)? |

Updated to 10.4.7, no changes. "My eyes! The goggles do nothing!" Hmmm. Dug around myself but can't find a preference file for OOTP. But if somebody points me at it, I'll be happy to give deleting it a try. Really, I'd cover myself in peanut butter if I thought it would help. Thanks all for the suggestions so far. -Scot |

Tried it, but it didn't help. I'll give it a go with a new downloaded version tomorrow. I'm still not able to get it to launch the demo version, I can only get the delivery wizard. I assume to license it, I've got to actually get it to start, right? Anyway, I should have some time tomorrow to play it around with it, maybe some insight will befall me. I have faith. -Scot |

same problem
Actually I am having the same problem. After i installed the game and i click on the icon to start it, nothing happens. The icon reacts as if its going to start the application but it never does. I have tried to reinstall a few times with no difference. It wont let me reinstall any more because it says i have used up all of my installations and i should contact support. I tried to email support but have not recieved a response. thanks

No real update. Nothing I've tried has worked, but I've been busy recently so I haven't tried much.
If I get a chance this weekend I'll try and install OOTP on various Macs at the lab at work and see if I can get any common denominator for the failure to startup. -Scot |

Grasping at straws, but maybe a file that stores info about the purchase or registration number is corrupt? Are those stored in data/config also?

OK, well, I haven't been able to duplicate the error at work. I've got OOTP to work on a couple of machines here in demo mode. All the machines tried are older (G3 - G4) and running some version of 10.3, I haven't had access to the Mac Mini that mirrors my home system as it's being used for a project right now. Maybe this weekend I can try it out.
I'm assuming that OS 10.4 isn't the problem, since that would be pretty obvious. I don't have any 3rd party widgets or anything much but the regular Mac package running, so I don't have an obvious conflict there. I have downloaded the 1.02 version and will give that a try tonight after giving my system a stern talking too and a little cleaning up. We'll see how it goes. Gotta get this working-- I may actually have some free time to waste next week. -Scot |

But the game won't launch even in demo-mode. It launches the purchase / licensing software, but whether you buy or cancel, nothing happens. It just goes away. I've tried deleting and reinstalling and just going for the demo, but that hasn't worked either. It's as if my machine doesn't recognize that there's another program beyond the licensing software. That's it as far as my system is concerned. It's odd, to say the least. Figuring out if my first copy that I have since deleted was ever actually recorded as licensed (and thus deleted w/o being unlicensed) and what to do about it is a whole other kettle of fish. If anybody out there is also having this issue with the Mac version, mind giving us a run down of your specs? Trying to find a common thread. -Scot |

Just following up on a few long-ignored threads.
Can anyone tell me if this problem ever magically went away? ![]() Steve |

I'm 90% sure it's a corrupt file issue. I'm trying to figure out if any files are installed for the Mac version in weird places. Does the OOTP installer put everything it needs in the OOTP folder? Is there a way we can get a confirmation on that? BTW, for the future, it would be really nice if the installer was configured to make a log file for situations like this.

There's a preference file in the user/Library/Preferences folder called "com.sigames.ootpb.plist". magicotter, if you're still listening, make sure you've deleted that.
That's the only one I've been able to find. Of course, there might be something with a strange name that I haven't connected with OOTP, but *shrug*. Last edited by OakDragon; 10-07-2006 at 11:24 PM. |
