Corrales-Castillo III cancelled
Castillo Fails to Make Weight, Fight Off
Diego Corrales wasn't about to make the same mistake twice. He and Jose Luis Castillo had been down this road before. Their WBC lightweight title fight was called off Friday after Castillo didn't come close to making the 135-pound limit for the second time in a row, and Corrales decided it was too dangerous for him to go ahead with the fight. Corrales gave up a $1.3 million payday rather than fight a much heavier fighter. He did it with the memory of his knockout loss to Castillo last October when Castillo was also heavier fresh in his mind. "I have a wife and children and I want to see them grow up," Corrales said Corrales paid the price in their last fight, losing on a fourth round knockout to a fighter who didn't have to make the same sacrifice to make weight as he did. "If he got hurt I could never live with myself again," said Corrales' promoter Gary Shaw, who urged his fighter not to fight. The Saturday night fight could have gone on as a non-title bout, and Corrales had the final say. But his manager, promoter and trainer both told him he shouldn't fight because it was too risky to fight against a fighter who outweighed him by so much. "I would say pull the plug on it," trainer Joe Goossen said. "He (Corrales) drained himself to make 135 and the other guy didn't have to do it." Castillo weighed in a total of four times during a two-hour period but could never get any closer than 139 1/2 pounds. Corrales, meanwhile, weighed the 135-pound limit on his first try. "All I can say is I'm sorry," Castillo said. That wasn't good enough for Corrales, who was angered by Castillo's failure to get anywhere near the weight. "Those are just empty words," Corrales said. "I wanted to hit him in the mouth." Corrales huddled with his promoter and manager and Castillo's promoter, Bob Arum, before making his decision. His wife looked on, holding their infant daughter. The two promoters then told what was left of a crowd that came for the weigh-in at Caesars Palace that the fight was off. "I'm mortified and embarrassed by what happened here," Arum said. "It's a disgrace." Arum, who has promoted fights for 40 years, said he couldn't remember a fight being canceled because of weight like this. Corrales held the WBC title despite being knocked out in his last fight because that fight was a non-title fight after Castillo weighed in at 138 1/2 pounds. Castillo was visibly drawn and had trouble getting up while lying on the stage at the weigh-in. The concern over his weight had prompted the WBC to weigh him at various times in his training, and Nevada boxing officials said he would forfeit up to 25 percent of his $900,000 purse if he was over the limit. None of that helped Castillo get anyway near the weight limit, and his own promoter angrily accused his fighter's camp of lying to him. "It's disgusting," Arum said. "If I was Corrales I wouldn't fight either." Corrales was to make $1.2 million for the fight, and would have gotten an extra $125,000 because of a fine Castillo's camp had agreed on beforehand if their fighter did not make weight. A WBC supervisor said both the promoters and the Nevada Athletic Commission should have known Castillo was having trouble with his weight because he was weighed 30 days out and missed a target weight of 148 pounds and again a week ago and missed a target of 142 pounds. "I thought all along he wouldn't make the weight," Shaw said. "It's perpetuating a fraud on the public. Don't do the charade." Promoters had sold about 8,000 tickets for the fight, and Arum said he stood to lose $1 million from the cancellation. The fight card will go on without the main event, but anyone with a ticket was offered a full refund. Corrales and Castillo engaged in one of the great fights of modern times last year, with Corrales getting off the canvas twice in the 10th round to stop Castillo in a battle that left both fighters battered and bruised. The rematch, though, came off only after Castillo agreed to forfeit some of his purse, then made the most of it by landing a crushing left hook in the fourth round to stop Corrales. |

This is complete garbage, when your a professional fighter you should make the weight that you signed to fight at. The fact that Castillo pulled this stunt twice made me lose alot of respect for him.

I was really looking forward to this fight. This just shows what kind of training habits Castillo has. Darchynian-Maldonado will now be the main event. Corrales has every right to pull out of this entire mess. Safety is the upmost importance and it was not worth risking it again.

He should know his body & if he can't make 135 any more, he should have just said he'll fight @ 140 or 147 from now on. Wonder if Arum will let him fight Cotto now? Who's to say Castillo is able to make 140 in the Fall with his history? |

Yeah - Too bad this fight isn't happening tonight - But the reality is clear that Castillo can't fight at LW anymore - It is not that he didn't try to make weight....it is clear he did....he doesn't have any water weight left in him -
He was completely gaunt just getting down to 139.5 - His body has simply grown out of the divisioin - 140 is clealry going to be difficult for him to make much longer as well - Castillo Vs Cotto at 140....I'd take Castillo still - The Vic Vs Maldonado should still be good to watch - Will answer questions about both these guys - |

He is in his 30's now....completely different then trying to fight at weight where he was in his 20's.....His body has simply matured.....The first fight I'll give you that he simply didn't make weight because of training habits (and was always able in the past to simply "cut" weight right at the end...and found out he couldn't that time) - This time I think he trained and drained....and there was simply no way for him to make the 135 limit. |

Darchynian-Maldonado (spoiler)
Darchynian TKO8 over Maldonado
Vic dominated most of the fight and his power punches was hurting Maldanado. Cortes stepped in midway through the 8th because he was taking too much punishment. I give Maldonado credit....he did stay on his feet and took a punch well. No other fights were shown. The first half hour of the broadcast was dedicated to the fiasco yesterday. According to the Nevada State Commission, Castillo could be facing some stiff fines and a lengthy suspension. Arum said he would wait and see what the commission did to decide if he would promote him anymore. |

Fighters need to be punished for doing this
Either a fine of like 10% of the purse of they drop a few standings in thr world rankings or lose their contendership |

Without a doubt Arce Vs Darchynian would be excellent - Both guys looking to score a KO with about every punch - But it will have to happen at 115.....Arce is moving up to JBW - Having too much trouble trying to make 112 anymore - If they fight at 115...I'll go with Arce.......Vic Darchynian doesn't throw enough punches at times.....and doesn't throw good combinations at all...Basically a pawing little right hand jab.....half-as$ed right hook and his money shot...the big left hand... J. Arce throws good combinations....in volume....and his inside game (short hooks) will eat Vic alive (IMO). Plus I think Arce hits just as hard (if not more so) - Vic swings BIG without a doubt.....but I've seen a half dozen of his fights now....and he lands that left hand on the button lots of times and guys don't simply go out. Either way it'd be a hell of a fight....with two guys who love to bang. Vic seems to have a great chin.....but at the same time...it has only had the chance to be tested about twice in his career yet - |
