Salary cap questions

Has anyone found the right mix for a good salary cap. (Modern era) I don't want just anyone to be able to sign the best shortstop in the league but at the same time I want every team to at least have a long shot at signing him as well.

I am thinking around 86-96 million?

Any help would be appreciated.

I've always been into starting leagues with salary caps. I generally start out without a salary cap, sim a few seasons, then figure out what would be a fair number (I usually settle around where the 5th highest paying team is).

I also hope, at least eventually, that we can set a salary "floor" as well. I think that's more important than a cap, at least it would be for today's MLB.

So what have you come up with for a 30 team league?

I honestly don't remember...I haven't played with a salary cap in awhile, but I think I remember around $85 mil working well enough for me, at least in V5.

You remember correctly. Anywhere from $80-100 million generally works real well....at least in previous versions. Teams with good revenue flow will always max out, albeit usually as the result of ridiculous bidding wars in the FA market. Teams with average/poor revenue flow usually still remain competitive long enough until their financial fortunes turn around.

The end result is usually some semblance of league-wide parity...or mediocrity, depending on how you define that word.

Which is why I'd love a salary floor, that way it doesnt create mediocrity...but it does make teams become more competitive.

Matty, that's a capital idea! You should've suggested that months ago. Maybe that suggestion would have gotten noticed and added to the game.

Salary caps are for lesser sports like football and basketball.

As a Yankee fan, I am fundamentally opposed to a salary cap

I'm a Yankee fan, but I'd be for one if it was for the good of the game. However, as I stated above, I'd prefer a salary floor, that way teams like KC, Pittsburgh, Florida among others would have to spend money to put a competitive team out there, rather than just pocketing all the revenue sharing money. Really not fair at all.

Agreed, absolutely no cap without a floor. The owners in Pitt, Miami and KC are robbing the system and their fans.

I kinda like it the way it is though.

The nightmare scenario would invovle a cap being put in place and then Charles Dolan buying the Yankees and then naming Isiah Thomas the GM.

As a Royals fan I am fundamentally opposed to David Glass. He likes cheap labor at Wal-Mart and the same in Kaufmann Stadium.

And since I am running the Mariners (in my universe) a cap would certainly help my team!

Didn't 6.5 have a salary cap, or did it just have a maximum team cash? Is 2006's more realistic than 6's?
