Heads up : Flags in OOTPB2006

You've hopefully seen the new OOTPB2006 screenshots and you'll notice the game is using flags.

The proposed format for game flags will be 18 x 12 and in PNG format

If you have any other questions relating to flags, I'm here to help!

Is the bevelling (or shading?) added by the game, or is that part of the images that you're using?

Which screenshot(s) are we talking about? I can't see a 'flag' image on any of them.

Can I request a Confederate flag and a Soviet Union flag for the Beta Test?

Psst. It's a secret!

I can't get over how much I dislike the logos on the screenshots. The circle look that is lopped off on the edges by the square? I don't like it...

I think that's where the player photos are inserted, IIRC.

I rejoice every time I read about Sherman and the Army of the Ohio burning Atlanta. Smells like, victory.

That said, it is a distinct possibility that someone can decide to do a fictional sim in Harry Turtledove's fictional universe, or try to have a more accurate 1978 simulation with the Soviet Union intact, versus being splintered into its constituant republics.

I won't judge you and you won't judge me, hmm, OK?

The only problem with such a small size (18x12), is that a pixel based program like photoshop is pretty limited in creating quality images at such a small scale.

Unless anyone knows where exsiting vector based flag images are available, it would seem that only those with CorelDraw or some other vector based program would be needed to create these images.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

What file format would a vector based image use?

http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/

CIA has a lot of flags as a reference. They seem to be GIF's.

Yeah, that's a concern. I was planning to create some myself and test it out a bit, see what works and what doesn't. I don't have the talent to make high-quality logos like most of the folks here but I love to make flags.

It's not the file format that's the issue, but the way the program interprets the image you're working on.
Photoshop generates an image in little units called pixels; the larger the image you're working with, the more pixels it can contain and therefore the more clarity, sharpness and definition it can support. But as the image gets smaller, it reduces the total number of pixels and therefore the amount of information that it can retain - resulting in jagged, indistinct blobs of colour.
Vector based programs like CorelDraw create images as a mathematical expression, making file size irrelavent. A tiny image can contain as much detail and sharpness as a large image.
File format only comes into play when you have completed working on an image and do a "save as" at the end.

Thus it appears that vector based programs are the avenue of choice for generating the needed flags for our baseball universes.
In the OOTP community, I believe that Cuss, La Grande Orange, Dbacks and StorminZ currently use vector based programs.

Once again, please correct me if I'm off base on any of my explanations.
