Nationals Sold

Word is the City is not a fan of the owner. Theodore Lerner bought the team for 450M.

If I won the lottery, I'd buy the team too. That would rock.

Then I'd run the team just by posting polls on the OOTP boards!

You'd need to win at least twice, possibly three times.

I can see it now....

mikev in the clubhouse before the game adressing the team

'Ok everyone listen up. Perez, your on the bench tonight. James, McNichols both of you too.
In your places were are going to have the following'
Reads from a laptop he holds
'A small monkey wearing a cowboy hat and riding a dog will be out in left, a subserviant chicken behind the plate'
'Gload, your going to be playing the rest of the field and between innings selling hotdogs in the stands'

Every OOTP member should pitch in, buy a team, and run it in this manner.

Woah neat, he's a Bethesda guy. I guess he'll start arming the Nationals with enchanted bats and tell his pitchers to specialize in destruction magic. The trainers should be top of the line with restoration spells though!

This statement made me chuckle:

Quote:
The Malek-Zients and Smulyan groups lobbied city officials repeatedly in the past year, but the Lerners remained quiet, talking solely with MLB and declining to discuss their bid with city leaders.
Makes it sound like Lerner wasn't willing to spread some cash around.

Why sell the team when it would've been cheaper to sell the entire city?

Not that anyone in their right mind would want to buy DC, that is.

It sounds like the council members have either received money from the other possible buyers or they're just plain idiots. Jeffrey Smulyan would be an outside owner - from Cleveland or somewhere like that I believe - who owned the Mariners for a few years and had them moved to Tampa before a local group stepped in and kept them here. I can't imagine why anyone would prefer an owner with his track record. I don't know much about the other group, but I can't see why anyone would have a problem with local owners who followed every request MLB made of them (do not talk publically about purchase, etc...).

Well, if the new ownership group knows what they're doing, I'd say he has until about dinnertime.

The city perceived the Malek group to be more minority friendly because almost from the beginning of the process they had Colin Powell and others(I think Vernon Jordan as well) as part of their group. It was only a recent development that the Lerners added several minorities to their group. That's the main reason they wanted to see the Malek group win the bid.

Exactly. More than likely the former.

It wouldn't have done any good for the candidates to give money to anyone on the council because the council had no leverage whatsoever in picking who the owner would be.

No, but the council members can run to the press and insinuate things like racism that would make the situation harder on the owners and MLB.
