So who has the best/worst scouting organization and minor leagues?

In the discussion of beaning Johnny Damon dot com, we had a discussion going about minors development and how the Yankees don't have much of a grasp of what makes a dynasty long term since Steinbrenner has had them.

So who do you think does the best job of scouting and using their minor league talent?

Oakland, Seattle seem to have some good talent. White Sox seem to use their minors well..

Cubs, Royals and Yankees don't seem to develop or use their minor leaguers very well, either mismanaging them or trading them away for has beens etc...

I was wondering what your thoughts were? Best ? Worst? Up and comers? Sliding back ?

Braves are always good. The Angels I think have been solid for a few years. D'Backs, too.

My Mets are erratic, middle of the pack usually.

Hard to say about the whole system, but Minnesota has traditionally been good at trading for other teams' minor leaguers and developing them.

But a lot of Cleveland's best prospects--Hafner robbed from Texas off the top of my head--have come over in trades, so does that count?

My vote would be for the Braves--they seem not just to trade for talent, but to be genuinely good at developing it. Look at all those rookies last year.

That's not quite fair to Steinbrenner. He may be a top-of-the-line jerk, but the Yankees have had two groups of players win multiple World Series since he took them over, which no other franchise can claim. Granted, most of that time he's used the minor-league system almost exclusively as trade bait, but the 96-00 Yankees are as long-term a dynasty as we've seen since the powerhouse Yankees of the 50's.

Actually that is one of the reasons I like the Braves as well for their minors. Their GM was with the Royals before he went to Atlanta, and man could he develop a minor league system. When the team was losing their beloved owners due to health, (I think it was then) he saw the writing on the wall and moved to the ATL and made the Braves the juggernaut they are now.

I really miss having Scherholz around in KC. He did some great things with the KC organization then. ATL fans should cry the day that guy retires.

Over the past 10-15 years, the Braves and Oakland have been very good, but the Angels have been very good for a while with developing young talent. The nucleus of the '02 team (Glaus, Salmon, Washburn, Anderson, Molina, Erstad, etc) were mostly developed in-house. The current crop of Angel prospects looks like it will be even better.

Things were pretty rosy here in Las Vegas before the Dodgers came around.

I can't believe how ridiculously awesome we were under the Padres.

Theres the Braves, and then everybody else.

Nobody runs off 14 straight with the same core group, and a good portion of their talent comes up through the minors.

Oakland is quickly becoming a minor league powerhouse too.

The Braves have some real good Assistant GM's. So when Shuerholz retires hopefully they can follow in his footsteps. I think its Dayton Moore and Frank Wren. Don't quote me but I believe those 2 have been with Jon for a long time.

San Diego's starting line-up has four players with two or less years of experience that came out of their system (Do we also count Adrian Gonzales?).

Toronto is not that bad at developing talent either. Yankees aren't that bad. Mike Lowell, Nick Johnson, Alfonso Soriano among others.... The yanks just don't keep them until they are fully developed.

Moving Soriano when he did was one of the best things Cashman has done. He got the guy's best two years out of him and I have little doubt that Soriano will not put up those numbers ever again. In return he got one of the best players to ever put on a uniform. Works for me.

Nobody knew what Nathan was gonna become, but that's also because Brian Sabean is horrible :P

That said...

Zito, Hudson, Mulder, Crosby, Blanton, Street, Harden, Haren, Duchscherer, Chavez, Tejada, Giambi

I guess the A's minors put out some okay guys :P

I don't think any organization gets more use out of their minors than Atlanta. Maybe Oakland but other than that Atlanta pretty much develops all of their studs, particularly hitters.

Peralta, Martinez, Sabathia, and Cabrera are homegrown.

And Weiss and Steinbach and Batista and Grieve. I got to see all the guys I listed plus Giambi, Tejada, possibly Chavez and definitely at least 1 of the Big 3 ZHM trio come through my home town AA Huntsville Stars.

Now we're with Milwaukee. Ugh. Although I did get to see Hideo Nomo in a rehab stint, plus Rickie Weeks, Prince Fielder, J. J. Hardy, Corey Hart, Ben Sheets, and Tony Gwynn, Jr.
