XFire Support For OOTP

I just started a thread on the XFire website to request support for OOTP. Please let me know if my post could be better worded or if corrections are needed. Hopefully multiple posts in that thread will convince the Xfire developers to support OOTP.

If xfire is what I think it is, I have no interest in it.

What is XFire? Never heard of it. And why is it bad?

From their FAQ

"* What is Xfire?

Xfire is a free gaming tool that automatically keeps track of when and where gamers are playing PC games online and lets their friends join them easily. It doesn't matter which online game your friends are playing, which server browser they are using, or which gaming service they're playing on; Xfire is intelligent enough to recognize where your friends are at any time. I don't possibly see how X-Fire would be used in OOTP. You never actualy play it online. You upload files and that is it...

Maybe one day this would be good of H2H was implemented. Now I am not trying to stir anything, just an observation.

Xfire keeps track of what games you play, whether the games are online based or not. People can then put a banner in their sig that shows what games they have played the most this week and what game they have played the most overall.

My thought process is that if OOTP was added to Xfire and people put the Xfire banner on other boards, it might provide some free advertisement to the game. It can also be used here to see who the biggest OOTP loser is.

For those of you who do not know what Xfire is, think of a instant messaging program combined with a program that keeps track of how often and what servers you play games on.

Here is a sample of the output.

I requested OOTP about 6 months back and never got any support for it. Don't get your hopes up.

X-Fire is just another viral marketing tool for Unilever. I don't want any of it, thanks.

Well, I really wasnt expecting such a negitive response. Xfire has 3.8 million registered users and I thought this would be a good way to get some free advertisement for OOTP.

I am not familiar with Unilever and did not see any real negitive information for them doing a quick search of google. I did see that Unilever is one of 38 partners for XFire that I am sure buys the gaming habits of Xfire users for their own uses. This happens at alot of companies do this, (read the TOS, there is usually a disclaimer in there) and it really doesnt bother me. If Gillette wants to know how often I play Halo, I really dont care.

I don't mean this to sound condescending or condemnatory in any way, but you should. Why?...Because it's none of Gillette's G-d damn business what you play or what you don't play.

I find it amusing that people will readily sign up for "services" like Xfire, and then turn around and seem utterly bemused and irate by the fact that identity theft has reached epidemic proportions and that privacy in general has rapidly evaporated in this country.

I'm not saying you're doing this, but I know people who do.

Giving up your privacy and some of the control of your computer for a gaming experience really is a stupid thing to do.

I stopped playing Valve games when they started requiring the presence of Steam.

XFire is for the very young. How many of you past college age have a site at MySpace.com?

Just curious, but is the main draw for Xfire that it will hopefully generate new friendships because of the common bond of playing the same game, or is it the ability to quickly and freely communicate with others while playing?

If it's the former, if it works well in that regard then great, although I would think it's easier to to do through other means means. If it's the latter, what really differentiates it from any of the less-invasive IM programs out there?

I see the benefits of Xfire and I have it installed. It does help bring people together, but at what cost?

Bah, it's online, it's gaming, it has nothing to do with real life. I don't care if I get hacked, get a virus, whether companies know what games I play... My real life continues without a hiccup.

fun is fun. I'll support xfire.

You'll be singing a different tune when you do hacked and someone steals your ID or your Social Security # and you get bombarded with credit card bills that you never amassed. That's not a fantasy… that is "real life".

Installing xfire and divulging your SS#, CC#, etc are totally independent of each other. You can get anyone's name, address, phone # out of a phone book.

Here's what you wrote:

Quote:

I merely demonstrated how getting hacked can lead to dire consequences. And you retort by saying it can happen anyway?

Gee whiz, has it ever occurred to you that maybe it wouldn't happen if you merely took a few simple precautions? There are ways to avoid identity theft, and it begins by utilizing a little common sense.

Ergo, installing software like Xfire assuredly falls under the category of "not using your noodle". You're just inviting trouble, but to each his own.

X-Fire does not have my name, address, phone number, or any other information about me except probably my ip address and the amount of time i play video games. They can have that, ip addresses arent exactly secret. I havent had a virus or for that matter spyware/malware in a very long time. I run my own server and keeping it up is important to me. Xfire has no way to disrupt that. From my own experience, Xfire collects about as much information from me as Espn.com, or any other ad driven, cookie enabled website you visit.

As far as the benefits, I have already explained those as far as OOTP goes. If I plaster my banner sig on the other boards I am on and it lists OOTP 2006 as the game that I am playing the most, it might make some wonder what OOTP is. As far as the benefits to the user, well its basically a IM program with gaming features. I can see what servers are available or what games and servers my friends are playing on before I jump into the game. It also allows me to IM in game (AIM usually cant do this without getting out of the game), take screenshots, and keep track of how long I play.

This thread was never intended to be an advertisement for Xfire. I (wrongly) assumed that this message board was full of fps/mmo gamers, who already knew of or used Xfire. For many, not just the young (i dont fit into that category and neither do the friends I know that have it), its is an important piece of software for coordinating online gaming.

I am probably among the minority here, but I don't use Instant Messaging of any kind at any time. This is going a bit off-topic, but if you are interested in ridding yourself of IE Messenger, I reccomend this utility "GoodbyMessenger" (remmsg v. 2.0.1) :
