Who's the best hitter in MLB history?

(The list is based in top 5 MLB career leaders in AVG, HRs, and RBIs.)

Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and all other scientific experiments should be taken out of consideration. That's just my opinion.

I'm sure that things are a discrimination against an African American (Bonds) and a Latin (Sosa). That's just my humble opinion.

A lifetime .274 hitter, with 157 strikeouts per every 600 at bats isn't in the top 50. Or 100.

I can think of someone who is comfortably in the top 50 and hit .267 with 135 K's per 600 AB (including a season of 180).

Excellent choice; I wish I had thought of it. What I liked most about Belliard was that he wasn't some roided up, home run hitting goon nancy boy. He didn't waste his time or energy hitting stupid home runs. He drove in runs the manly way. Home runs are for wusses.

I voted for Ruth. If you had said player, I still would have went with Ruth, but by a lesser margin. I think that his complete offensive dominance makes up for his relatively average fielding and below average baserunning ability. If we were counting his pitching, I think that he's clearly the best player ever, because he was one of the best pitchers in the league and might have been able to be a HOF pitcher if he hadn't been converted to an OF. Based purely on statistics, I think that a good case can be made for Bonds as the greatest offensive player ever, though I disagree with it, but I believe that Bonds' use of steroids and other illegal supplements solidifies the fact that he's below Ruth.

If Bonds had never used anything illegal I still think he'd be among the all-time greats, but he wouldn't be what he is. On a purely statistical level, Bonds' last five full years have been as good as any five years in the history of baseball, in my view. However, given the steroids question, I think that it's clearly Ruth. I think that Ted Williams is right up there as well, as is Cobb.
