All-Time NBA Team

Alright guys, give me your lineup for the All-Time NBA team.

Here's mine:

G Magic Johnson
G Michael Jordan
F Larry Bird
F Karl Malone
C Wilt Chamberlin

Just make sure that the lineup makes sense. I wouldn't necessarily rank my lineup as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th best players of all time but you can't have a lineup with 5 centers or 5 point guards.

With the talents of the players involved (high shooting %, 2 dominant big men, and guys who aren't really limited to one traditional positional role) I'd run a 1-2-2 wing offense.

PG - John Stockton
W - Magic Johnson
W - Michael Jordon
F - Shaquille O'Neal
F - Wilt Chamberlain

Edit: Hard to leave Bird out, but I went with Shaq because I wanted to 2 huge paint dominators down low so all 3 guards could be there. Here's what I almost went with.

PG - Stockton
SG - Jordan
SF - Magic
PF - Bird
C - Wilt

(Magic and Bird can be out of position and pull it off on this team)

I'll go a couple steps better: First, second, and third teams.

First Team
PG: Stockton
SG: MJ
SF: Bird
PF: Russell (yes; I don't care if he played center, he was only 6'9", 215)
C: Wilt

Second Team
PG: Magic
SG: Oscar Robertson
SF: Dr. J
PF: Tim Duncan
C: Kareem

Third Team
PG: Jerry West (check out his career assist #s if you don't buy it)
SG: Elgin Baylor
SF: Kevin Garnett
PF: Mailman
C: Hakeem

I hope you're putting Baylor at SF and Bird at PF. Baylor's the shortest guy in that lineup.

1st Team
1 Oscar Robertson (the guy averaged a triple double for a whole season)
2 Michael Jordan
3 Karl Malone (I know he's really a 4, but he is the NBA all-time win-shares leader)
4 Elgin Baylor (career average 27.4 ppg, 13.5 rpg, and 4.3 apg)
5 Chamberlain

2nd team
1 Magic
2 Jerry West (career 27.0 ppg, 6.7 apg, 5.8 rpg, and averaged over 40 ppg for 11 games during the 65 playoffs)
3 Bird
4. Bob Pettit (career 16.2 rpg and 27.0 ppg)
5. Russell, just because of the rings

Probably a good idea since no matter what 5 guys you put on the first team there's about 4 or 5 inexcusable snubs.

I'll think about it some more and put my 2nd and 3rd teams up.

At this level, I don't know if "inexcusable snub" is accurate. It's merely a judgment call as to who was better. You can make arguments for about a couple dozen guys, but if you're only going to pick five, or ten, or fifteen, that means the rest have to take a back seat, regardless of how great they were.

I had trouble leaving Moses Malone off in favor of Karl. I could have bumped Garnett, but neither of the Malones is a 3, really. I wanted to put David Robinson on here, but Hakeem was not only better, he crushed the Admiral in the '95 playoffs.

I could live with either of those guys playing out of position, but I think that Bird in the 4-spot makes sense.

But Baylor averaged 16 boards a game career. Size has nothing to do with it. Would you put Bird at 4 and Barkley at 3 just because he's 4-5 inches taller? Bird was a 3 to McHale's 4 and Baylor was definitely not a 3 in his day. By this reasoning Magic should be a 3 or a 4 and not a 1.

But the pace and the number of missed shots Baylor had available sure as all heck did.

I don't want to discuss this anyway, so I'm just going to assume I don't know what I'm talking about. S.O.P. for this forum, as far as I'm concerned.

Larry Robinson, who was on 8 teams in 7 years.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/...robinla01.html

After that

PG - Magic
SG - Jordan
SF - Bird
PF - Malone
C. - Chamberlain

Malone is the only one in question for me. Most of the great PF are from before I knew of them.
