He was one of the greats. If you watched an AFL game or MLB game and he was the play by play guy, you were listening to one of the best ever.

Curt Gowdy did everything in the 1970s. What a truly wonderful, pioneering, superb broadcaster.

I started a thread in OT when I first heard the news. That man was an inspiration to me during the early days of my broadcast career. I'd listen to him and try to copy his style and I just couldn't do it. A real pro. A real original. RIP.

Few people know Gowdy was one of America's greatest outdoorsmen in addition to being a Hall of Fame broadcaster. He and Ted Williams were regular hunting and fishing partners and there's even a national park named for Gowdy. He was quite an interesting man.

RIP: Curt Gowdy

I know I normally post these in OT, but this one seems better suited to this forum. RIP Curt.

I went against routine, and posted this one in Talk Sports. That's what I get for not checking here first.

RIP, Curt.

It appears they combined all three incarnations of this thread. DAED's (the OT original), mine (the TS original...a tad behind DAED's) and Relic's "Official RIP" thread...

If there was a Mount Rushmore of broadcasters, this guy would be on it for sure.

I always liked Curt. When I came to Canada in 1966, I knew nothing about Baseball. I didn't start watching much until 1969 probably because of the Expos. From then through the 1970's I watched The Game Of The Week religiously. I can't remember why but I made a cassette recording of the All Star Game, 1971 in Detroit. Reggie Jackson hit a monster shot off the lights on the roof of Tiger Stadium. Gowdy's call was something like, "there's a shot, way way back, it's... ... off the roof!

Good broadcaster. He did the Heidi Game in 1968. I watched that but again not understanding American Football, I didn't understand the fuss until years later.

Says a lot about what some board members think of him. When's the last time someone had three RIP threads started about them on here?

It may say more about our age.

How classy was a game that gave you your choice of Curt Gowdy OR Mel Allen to call the play-by-play?

I also liked Gowdy's American Sportsman show. Sort of filled the gaps on Sunday afternoons once the football season ended.
