Why do I like this deal? He was cheap. The Yanks still have the kiddie power to go after Weaver now if they feel they need to patch their rotation (and I would LOVE Weaver over El Duque anyday).

The Tigers just signed Weaver (well, before the season) a pretty cheap 4 year deal, so I doubt he'll be going anywhere.

Baseball needs a salary cap or the whole league is going to go in the crapper even further

I think the Yankees should jack their payroll to around $200mil and go 162-0 every year. Why the hell not? Nobody is willing to put an end to this madness. This sucks for everyone else AGAIN.

i dont think it would guarentee a 162-0 season. baseball is not basketball where one signing can change your team. ofcourse, with 200 million you can get 9 big signings. so i see your point.

anywayz, i agree. something has to be done. i love the yankees and i'm not upset with them b/c they are merely taking advantage of the system and there's nothing wrong or illegal about it.

however, i wish there was an opportunity for all 30 teams to take advantage of the system too.

Mondesi: Expensive mediocrity

Mondesi: Expensive mediocrity
Great Quote! Here's the rest of the box from ESPN.
Quote:
Raul Mondesi has long been one of baseball's most overrated players, and the six-year, $60 million contract the Dodgers gave him January 1998 was one of the worst signings of recent years.

He's never driven in 100 runs in a season and his career-high of 33 HRs (in 1999) is pedestrian by today's standards, especially those for a $10-million-a-year player. He's had an on-base percentage higher than .350 just once in his career.

This year, despite 15 HRs, he ranks just 57th in the AL in OPS (on-base + slugging). In fact, check his numbers vs. the totals for Yankee right fielders this year:

Mondesi
.224 AVG, .301 OBP, .435 SLG
Yankees' RFs
.276 AVG, .341 OBP, .423 SLG

Mondesi isn't really any better than the John Vander Wal/Shane Spencer combo, although the trade allows those two to play left field in place of Rondell White (.706 OPS).

J.P. Ricciardi found a taker for Mondesi ... the only team that can afford to take on such an expensive mediocrity.
-- David Schoenfield
All this for a lefty minor league pitcher and the willingness to blow 13 million and a roster spot on him next year.

More telling is the fact that the Yankees according to the article are the only team to have expressed any interest in Mondesi, who's been on the block since Riccardi took over as Toronto GM.

I don't disagree at all. The owners are the ones that I am criticizing. The Yankees arent doing anything wrong except for playing within the rules. Kind of like when I made trades with the A.I.. I was able to get Pedro and whoemever else I wanted. After awhile, i needed a new challenge. I am a baseball fan for almost 30 years and realize that my Phillies don't have the money(laughing) to compete. Baseball is a great sport that unfortunatley is run by people who for the most part could care less about it's future.

The problem is that many teams do make the money to be able to sign big name players but they choose not to.

But that's the Phillies *OWN* fault. They're run by idiots. They're in the 4th largest market in MLB and they don't use it. Can't blame MLB there.

exactly. just like that idiot in kansas city.

some small market teams complain about competition and not making money but their owners pocket everything.

you guys made a valid claim that the Yankees, and other big money making teams, should share their tv revenue from games. like 50/50 or something. or the small teams should say we wont play baseball...it was something like that

now i like the idea, and i think its valid but the real question is how many of those teams will actually take that 50% (or even the 50% bud selig is pushing for in sharing) and push it out to their teams? my guess is that only Oakland will really do that, being as they have 5 big stars in Zito, Mulder, Hudson, Chavez and Tejada who they will have to pay sometime.

i think it really sucks that those guys wont be together in 3-4 years. thats depressing.
