What a stupid trade

Anyone ever see something like this?

Friday 4/21/1916 :
Trade between New York (A) and Detroit :
Detroit gets :
P Tom Hughes
New York (A) gets :
LF Ty Cobb

Someone shoot the Detroit GM!

This is 1916, so Cobb is 29 - no "he's getting old" to worry about, he's hitting his prime. Detroit is HORRIBLE, and they really, really need someone like Cobb. Hughes is a good pitcher... but he's a reliever (they need starters), and it's TY COBB.

I'm just in shock.

That's no different from the kind of trades the Yankees make today though.

Sounds like Branch Rickey is the Detroit GM. Trade them while their value's high.

On a side note, the Yankees (or Hilltoppers, I believe at the time) almost had Ty Cobb. After his rookie season, Detroit offered him to New York, who said they didn't want a "dumb .240 busher", or something to that effect.

Guess now they learned. ; )

Peace
John

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

Heh, when I saw you post this, I thought it was gonna be about the Mondesi deal.

Maybe they got tired of Cobb committing hate crimes around Detroit. *shrugs*

Mondesi deal? *checks ESPN*

WHAT THE HELL? Raul Mondesi for a minor league pitcher?

First off, Mondesi isn't that great - I'd rather Spencer and Vander Wal, or, if we're going for a trade, Cliff Floyd. Second, he may not be that great, but he's worth more than a double-A pitcher.

This seems to be a bit of a lose-lose situation to me...

Actually, I think it's good. You don't need great. Mondesi is gonna hit another 15 HR, maybe more probably this year, probably do better than Vander Wal or Spencer (at least starting, Spencer and Vander Wal are better great backups) and you're only paying 5 mill this year and 6 next for Mondesi, Toronto is picking up 7 mill from next year.

Besides, Mr. Loria (Marlins Owner) said he won't trade Floyd to the Yankees, so that's probably why you got Mondesi.

You have a point. Still, it seems a bit low to settle for.

ESPN also raises a good point - putting Mondesi in right frees up Spencer and Vander Wal for left to cover for White.

Now, where does he go in the lineup?

One of my beefs with OOTP 4 is that it seems to undervalue players who hit for average and have a lot of speed (You'll notice (outside the deadball era) that players who hit for a high average but don't hit for power or drive in many runs are rarely all-stars. I've seen guys hut .350 with 45 steals at the break not make the all-star game over guys who hit .285 with 11 HR). The game also doesn't 'recognize' leadoff type hitters. All the .300 hitters with speed and no power seem to bat 3rd in my leagues. But that's another issue...

Anyway. Remember that the game sees numbers, it doesn't know names or reputations, and as long as certain traits are undervalued you'll see 'lopsided' trades.
