OOTPBM 2006 one of the top 25 most anticipated games of 2006

According to Computer Games Magazine. Sorry, no link. I was just browsing thorugh the magazine yesterday and came acrossed it. It was mixed in with all these MMOs and action games. It was pretty cool to see. Although the author obviously had no idea what the game is really about. And he put the release date as March (we all know how accurate those things are).

I'm as excited as the next guy about this version, but I wonder which of the following will actually occur once the game is released:

1) The game actually goes beyond our expectations and blows us all away;
2) After something like 2 years of hype and anticipation, the game is solid but can't live up to the fantasy-like expectations we've all built up and we initially react unfavorably, although after a month or so of forgetting about our expectations, we realize that it's a solid game;
3) All the changes turn out to just be bells and whistles and we all return to OOTP6.5; or
4) The game is released with a lot of bugs that piss everyone off and it's OOTP6 all over again.

I'd love for 1 to occur, but I have the feeling 2 is the most likely event.

It'll be between 1 & 2.... it'll blow most away, but in the end it's still a baseball management/simulation game and not a working fusion reactor

When one can believe the testers, than this is by far the biggest step the series has taken forward in it's history and leaves competitors in the dust. But testers are biased...

I personally think that you just can't compare the games. The new version is different. And you can do with it 99% of what you could do in OOTP 6 and then so much more...

Reactor, huh? Would it be easier to include a nuclear reactor or head-to-head?

Oh, that's okay. Instead of working on a working fusion reactor and changing the world and how we get our energy, you just put all of your time in a baseball sim. That's fine. We can all just continue using oil, I guess.

Is the working fusion reactor capability going to be included in a patch?

It will be closer to 2. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I added a smiley, dammit!

In any event, I really was just razzing him. As someone who has no friends, let alone friends who would be into OOTP, I have no interest in the H2H feature.

I'm guessing smileys are required for all non-serious posts.

I believe, something between 2 and 3. The hype has been long and big, and all the new features create huge expectations, that won't be completely fulfilled. Also, I'm sure we're drooling over features that we'll use once and say "oh, well that's neat" and never use it again. If it turns out that some things like situational stats (batting average for a player with a 2-2 count with a runner on 3B) are merely eye candy and aren't valuable, then I'm sure we won't use it as much as we would if they were influenced by "hidden ratings" or whatever. That's what happened with me for the player tracker, I used it for a few days, and then let it fade out, after initially being super excited about it. . However, we won't revert to OOTP6, and overall it'll be a much more solid game than OOTP6.

I'm not saying that to be pessimistic, I'm sure Markus did a tremendous job, and I'm sure it'll be my favorite game ever. If anything, high expectations are a sign that we have confidence in Markus, and that we really believe this game can be great. High hopes are a sign of trust and confidence in Markus' ability.

Yeah, I feel pretty confident that it's going to be a good, if not great game. I have to check myself every once in awhile as I dream about my 'world' because I really may not be able to do all that I want to do. I will be happy with the product Markus puts out because he does good work and I will live with what's in it and with what's not in it.

The top 25 most-wanted games in 2006?

I have to tell a personal story here. Back when OOTPB 5 was released, I was employed in my dream job - teaching animation - and I was paid outrageous sums of money to do it. The only downside was that the company's management was flaky, and I always had problems renewing my contract. Twice I was fired by mistake, and the people that fired me got fired, and I got re-hired. Those were heady days, and I had so much money that buying any video game I wanted at any time for any reason was simply as easy as ponying up the credit card.

Well, the third firing was the charm, and I've stayed good and fired since then. Now I have to really watch every penny, so that my gaming decisions have to be extremely well thought-out. But even when I was made out of money, I don't think I bought more than 15 games in a year... buying 25 games would be more or less equivalent to a new game every two weeks. Even I could not keep up with that pace.

Still, OOTPB is right up there as #2 on my must-own list. The only game that I want more than OOTPB is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2006 - if it gets released, that is.
