D-backs looking to ship Glaus?

Found this on FoxSports:

Quote:
The Diamondbacks, moving aggressively to trade third baseman Troy Glaus, are in serious discussions with the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Orioles and an unidentified National League club, FOXSports.com has learned.

The Red Sox and Blue Jays are the front-runners for Glaus, according to an official from one of the interested clubs. The Sox, Jays and Orioles likely would move Glaus to first base, a position he has not played in his eight-year major-league career.

Glaus, 29, has limited no-trade protection in the four-year, $45 million contract he signed with the Diamondbacks last off-season. He would need to approve a deal to the Blue Jays, according to a source with knowledge of his contract. It is not known whether the other suitors are on his no-trade list.

The Diamondbacks, trying to add pitching, believe they can unload Glaus without paying any of the $32.75 million that he is owed in the final three years of his contract, sources say.

The Jays offered second baseman Orlando Hudson for Glaus, and probably would be willing to part with right-hander Miguel Batista as well if they obtained another player in the deal.

The Diamondbacks have discussed left-hander Erik Bedard from the Orioles and a number of other options. It is not known which Red Sox players the D-Backs are targeting, but Arizona's new general manager, Josh Byrnes, previously was the Red Sox's assistant G.M. The Sox have been protective of their young pitching in trade discussions, but could part with right-hander Matt Clement or Bronson Arroyo, especially if they sign free-agent right-hander Kevin Millwood.

A trade of Glaus would enable the Diamondbacks to move Chad Tracy from right field to third base. Shawn Green would go from center to right, and Conor Jackson and Tony Clark would share time at first.

Glaus batted .258 with 37 homers and 97 RBIs in his first season with the Diamondbacks, appearing in 149 games. Friends of his believe that he might be even more productive in '06. Glaus was unable to work on his upper body last off-season while recovering from shoulder surgery.
I'm wondering which team is the unidentified National League team.

He will go to the Cardinals for Marquis and others! The Cardinals will move Rolen to 1B so he can't get injured anymore,Glaus will play 3B and Albert to RF!
He won't go to the Blue Jays Overbay,Heinske,Hillibrand and Koskie on the Roster!
Hundson won't be traded!

It would be nice to see him as a Cardinal. But do you think the salary would work? Could they squeak it in their budget?

Where would the Red Sox put him? They already have a log jam of first and third basemen.

It would mean Youkilis has no job. I'd do it for Glaus.

Of course it's only speculation, but the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about a week ago intimated that the Pirates may have interest in Glaus.

You would think the Phillies would have STRONG interest here, 3b has been a real problem for them particularly offensively since that amazing Rolen trade.

ESPN is reporting that a deal sending Glaus to Toronto is nearing completion.

Man, Toronto is not acting nearly so poor this off-season.

If Florida wasn't dismantling, I'd guess they might be in it.

And yeah, Toronto is gaining a lot of fans this offseason.

TSN is reporting that the Jays are no longer interested.

Quote:
The Toronto Blue Jays may once again be looking to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a slugger.
According to several reports, the Blue Jays are among the front runners to land third baseman Troy Glaus. The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles are also said to be in the running.

General manager J.P. Ricciardi did not deny having interest in Glaus but insisted Thursday night the deal looked less likely.

"We had interest in him at one time, but nothing's going to happen with that now," Ricciardi tells the Toronto Star. "It's not going to happen with us."

A FOX Sports report claimed Toronto was prepared to send second baseman Orlando Hudson and pitcher Miguel Batista to Arizona for Glaus and another player. However, Glaus has a limited no-trade clause in his contract.

if(!sops){if(p.sops){var sops=p.sops;}else{var sops="";}} if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;} if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(dUnitBox)){place300x250 ();}}
Acquiring Glaus would give the Blue Jays a surplus of players at the two infield corner positions - first baseman Lyle Overbay, third baseman Corey Koskie, Shea Hillenbrand and Eric Hinske, who can play both positions.
Glaus had 37 homers and 97 RBI's last season for Arizona, figures which would have made him the team leader in both categories on the Blue Jays, despite battling knee and back injuries. He also committed 24 errors, which would have put him second among Blue Jays infielders.
Glaus, the MVP of the 2002 World Series with Anaheim, is due to earn $32-million over the next three years in Arizona.

If the deal goes through, the Blue Jays would have 5 1B/3B/DH types on the roster in Hinske, Hillenbrand, Koskie, Overbay and Glaus. I'm going to guess that Hillenbrand and Hinske would be the ones on their way out because of contract and youth respectively, but where would they go?

The only team I know of that wants a 3B desperately is the Pirates, and after that there's only teams with questionable demand like Cleveland, Philly, and the White Sox.

If this happens, Toronto screwed themselves over by reducing their leverage by not trading those two before getting Glaus.

Cardinals won't with the signing of Juan to play RF today!
Kevin is not out of a job if the Red Sox aqiure him because Mike Lowell is injure prone so a plantoon could happen and David Wells would be in the deal because he wants to Pitch out West!

I don't get this deal for Toronto. I like Glaus as a player but they're stocked at the corners and Hudson is a damn good 2b and Batista is a useful player. Why did it seem like they were determined to ship Hudson out of town?

Maybe JP has never forgiven Hudson for saying he looked like a pimp a few years ago.

Good deal for the DBacks - saves a ton of cash, gets a solid pitcher, a nice infielder and frees up 3B for Tracy.

The Jays needed a power bat and it seems he couldn't pry any OF from anyone ,so he went for someone who was available.

Hudson goes because he has value to other teams and can bring someone back.
I guess they also feel Aaron Hill can replace him well enough in the long run.

You can probably count on one or two of Koskie/Hinske/Hillenbrand to be traded now.

Meh, JP should know a power bat doesn't necessarily give them more than a good bat. BBPro has Adams rated as a defensive butcher - they'd probably have been better off sticking Hudson or Hill there and sticking with all the average corner guys. But that's just my opinion.
