Jamal Lewis: Pretty ****ing Bad

I got squashed in fantasy football this year, but as the defending champ in my money league, I figured I'd make a post congratulating the guys who did well. I also did a wrap-up of my season, which included an extensive breakdown on the awfulness of Jamal Lewis.

I actually did some research to see just how awful Jamal Lewis is. Look at Jamal's career rushing totals:

2000 - 1364 yds, 6 TD, 4.4 avg
2001 - N/A
2002 - 1327 yds, 6 TD, 4.3 avg
2003 - 2066 yds, 14 TD, 5.3 avg
2004 - 1006 yds, 7 TD, 4.3 avg
2005 - 638 yds, 2 TD, 3.1 avg

- Take 2003 out of the picture and Jamal Lewis is average at best. In 2001 while Jamal was injured, Antowain Smith ran for 1157 yards and had 12 TD. Antowain freakin' Smith.

- This season, Samkon Gado has 3 more touchdowns in half the carries. No one even knows who the hell Samkon Gado is.

- Jamal finished 18th in rushing in 2004. He wasn't even in the top 50% of the starting running backs in the league.

- Also in 2004, Michael Vick (a quarterback, for those curious) had only 104 less rushing yards than Lewis. Oh, and Lewis had 125 more attempts.

- This season, Jamal ranks 23rd in the NFL in rushing. Two rookies (Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams), two first-time starters (LaMont Jordan, Steven Jackson), and a third-stringer (Willie Parker) are all above him.

- Lewis is not in the top 30 for rushing TDs this season. That means Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs, Patrick Pass, and Greg Jones are above him.

- Last season, Jamal ranked 18th in rushing scores. Back-up RB Derrick Blaylock and 74-year-old Emmitt Smith had more than him.

My point is... Jamal Lewis is ****ty and Ravens fans overrate him.

Living in Maryland, I've had to deal with stupid Ravens fans since they hauled their ass in from Cleveland.

(By the way... if they moved from Cleveland, they aren't an expansion team, right? Ravens fans insist they were an expansion team, but I don't remember any expansion. I remember them being stolen from Cleveland just like the Colts were stolen from Baltimore. Hypocritical Ravens fans.)

Anyway...

In my lifetime, I've heard the following two statements, both of which were uttered with sincerity:

"Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino and has the Super Bowl ring to prove it."

"Jamal Lewis is the best running back in the NFL."

1. Trent Dilfer sucks. Anyone who says Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino should be publically executed. Seriously.

2. Jamal Lewis isn't the best running back in the league. Even in his best season he finished 11 touchdowns behind the leader. Give me a break.

I have no sympathy:

I picked Lewis in my first round (#6) and Domanick Davis in my secound round (#15). Somehow, I'm still over .500 (thank you, Larry Fitzgerald).

Why did you decide to pick him in the second round? His 2004 campaign was a reversion to the mean and should have sounded off alarm bells.

Because I had the second overall pick in a twelve team league with a snake draft. So I had the second and twenty-third overall pick. At twenty-three, I wanted a RB to pair with Tomlinson, and my choices were slim. At the time it was pretty much a toss-up between Lewis and Domanick Davis.

I'd be curious to hear your reasoning as well. That one great year really stood out from his career line. I guess that in non-keeper leagues I'm less likely to take an early-round risk on a guy with one fantastic year, particularly if it wasn't last season.

Oh, and to clarify, my bitterness towards Jamal only justified it's self this season. I blame him solely for costing me money, despite the fact that he wasn't the only bum on my team.

Prior to this year though, I despised him because I always felt like Ravens fans gave him more praise than he was due. And to anyone who's ever argued with a Ravens fan, you know it's a headache.

Larry Johnson in the double-digit rounds, I'm 10-3 and in 1st. I already had Portis and McGahee. Bulger was my starting QB then got hurt, then Byron Leftwich filled in nicely until now I've got Kurt Warner who's doing just about what I need him to do...injuries are overrated excuses. Anquan Boldin was a damn good pick, Jerry Porter has done adequately and Plexico Burress was pure genius. The Chicago D as my last pick of the draft was also a move of greatness.

Curious - where in Maryland do you live? I ask because you've heard...some interesting things, and I thought that *all* football fans in Maryland west of, say, Frederick were Steeler fans! I need to get to Deep Lake Lake more instead of th' eestirn shur , it seems.

Let me reassure you: as a season ticket holder, I get to hear a fair amount of chatter about the Birdies-and there isn't much to be heard that's suitable for younger ears with respect to Jamal, lately. In fact, he's been getting booed just about everytime that he steps on the field. It's a little sad, really, considering that he was quite good over the last couple of seasons. But then it's also a little sad that he's still suiting up considering his legal problems.

I used to live about 15 minutes South of Baltimore. I only recently moved out to Frederick, where, yeah, most people are Steelers fans.

Whenever I see someone saying a running back sucks because of his total rushing yards, it makes me think of people who argue about baseball players and just quote RBI.

Jamal Lewis is having a bad year, but he was certainly a premier player other seasons.

No, I totally agree. That's why I think running backs should be measured by fumbles. If you get a running back with good hands, you've got yourself a winner!

Brian Westbrook could fumble 20 times a year while rushing for 750 yards and I'd still take him over 3/4 of the backs in the league.
