So who is going to be the IU basketball coach next year

Is is too early to call Dane Fife? How about Scott Skiles? How about Steve Alford who is 7-1 and didn't lose to a crappy small Indiana school. Or better yet how about a shoe? It can't coach any worse.

Ha! He too tonight lost on the road to an in-state rival (though who is pretty good), and he might do the same thing later in the week.

Ugh. I don't even want to talk about IU basketball anymore.

Yeah spoke too soon on that one, but I didn't see an old shoe losing to Indiana State last night.

This is what happens when a school's administration picks their coach based on what the players want, then the coach gets lucky in his first year with the old coaches players.

Mike Davis sucks, sucks baaaaaaaaad!

Let's see Jim Crews from Army, Dawkins or Wojo from Duke, Fife is still green but is a possibility, who else .... just say no to Bob Huggins don't want to be Thug U. Say no to Rick Majerus, you want a coach who will be around for a while. Is Steve Lavin a possibility?

Some friends of mine who are alumni's there said that the only reason he kept the job this year is that he promised to get Greg Oden and when that didn't happen the feeling is he has to A) win the Big Ten and B) go deep into the tourney just to have a shot at keeping his job this year. Losing to Indiana State probably doesn't help.

As an Illinois fan, I would fully behind Steve Alford going to Indiana.

My sentiments exactly. Except I'm not an Illinois fan. I know Alford would be the sentimental choice but he wouldn't be the right choice. Besides, I doubt he'd take the job if offered. I think he cares enough about his players to not immediately take another job within the conference. Moreover, I don't think putting a "Knight guy" in next is a good idea, as much as I like guys like Crews and even Dane Fife, whom I believe will make an excellent head coach some day. Time to break from the past and start rebuilding the program with someone from the outside, preferably a young coach who can build his own tradition of excellence. It worked in 1972 with that 31-year-old from Army.

Yep, unfortunately for Indiana, they are late and Ohio State already got their man. I honestly don't think Davis will be fired this year and probably not next year either.

Sadly, the best thing for us right now would be to miss the tournament for a third straight year. At that point I think the pressure would be far too great to fire Davis and he may even just resign (with some sort of buy-out -- ping: Mark Cuban!) and move on. This team may be just good enough on its own to win 18 games though. *sigh*

Yea, no way Indiana misses the tournament right now. With all of his coaching problems, Davis is a pretty good recruiter and talent evaluator. Basically, he would make a great assistant coach.

Not that he's a terrible coach, but Iowa fans don't seem to appreciate him (my theory is that people see what Ferentz has done with the football team and expect the same from Alford), so maybe he's better off in Indiana for himself and for Iowa fans.

I don't think he'll be offered that job, however, unless he has a stellar year at Iowa--in which case Iowa might not let him go. Kind of a catch-22.

To clear things up, I don't think Alford is a bad coach...especially compared to Davis. However, I also don't think he is a guy that is going to vault a program back to greatness or whatever. Alford is decent, but there are at least 30-40 division I coaches that I would rather have.

I have some sportswriters here in the state of Indiana that are taking that bet that IU doesn't make the big dance. They see this team as a quick fix enough to keep him his job, but not enough to keep the great players coming in.

Bringing in the center from down South was a huge help, but, a lot of people believe that his days are numbered. I personally believe that he needs to move on and take a job in the south where his ties are, and he can develop without all the uberscrutiny that IU is.

He hasn't proven over his career that he can coach and develop his players to the standards of previous coaches. Like others have stated, he rode the Knight coattails for the Final appearance, and it has been a downward spiral since then.

In ISU's defense, they are a team that can truly shoot the lights out with the ball, and it showed in that game against IU. Moss and Schnitker were hot from the field, both shooting just around 50% or higher for the game, and IU's offense only pulled down 7 offensive rebounds, and that needs a serious look.

22 turnovers is way too many for this style of play that Davis is using, and if it continues, the Hoosiers won't finish in the top half of the Big Ten much less get a bid to the March Madness.

I would say, let's see how they handle teams in the Big Ten they should beat, say like Purdue. If IU fans are upset, at least they aren't Boiler fans, they are going to have a very long season... woo.

YMMV of course.

It is important to remember that no matter how bleak things look for the Hoosiers right now, we're still fortunate that we're not Purdue.

Yeah but Purdue made the change finally (10 years too late) and Matt Painter will be a solid coach for them. I agree we missed the boat on Thad Matta. The reason I brought up Lavin was because I remember him being talked about for Purdue.

I'd rather see a young disciplinarian (sp) coach than a name coach come in. I'd love Fife but he is definitely too green. I'd say Wojo would be my favorite choice right now. Since he played and coached for Coach K it would appease the Knight fans also. Even Johnny Dawkins would be a good choice.
