Question on style

Been wondering, no judgment intended, just curious.

For some time now, quite a while in fact, the trend has been toward logos containing both origins and names. Perhaps that's in part due to the parallel demand for circle logos. But whatever happened to the single logo or symbol/icon isolated from any real text? Has it completely fallen out of grace or has it simply become a matter of extreme preference? Is it an issue of being able to more readily identify a team? Are they being used primarily for online leagues where this might be more affable?

I think on the board here city and nickname are usually requested.

I quickly checked several leagues' websites and found this:

In real life baseball, it seems that that is not the case. In MLB only 6 of 31 teams include both city and nickname...in the PCL 9 of 16...in the International League 7 of 14...in the Southern League 9 of 10 and in the Texas League 3 of 8.

I personally prefer both city and nickname, if it is a fictional team...that way it is easier for me to learn them...if it is just a symbol or letters, then it it will take me longer to learn them.

Actually, letters or just an image are best in the game as you can make them large enough to show up on even the small screens in OOTPB.

I think the popularity of circular logos has to do with the logo designers, who began creating them...knuckler really perfected the style...his logos show up very well in the game...both city and nickname are easy to read.

There are several others who do circular logos very well...illeracula and Cooleyvol come to mind. There are others, so please forgive the poor memory.
No slight is intended.

I think logo style ens up being some kind of personal preference. Most of the requsts that come ask for a circular logo and as a designer most of the time they are easier to make.

I have a solo league at home of 32 teams and only 3 or 4 actually use the circular logo, but all the teams have city and nickname on them. But at the same time, I also have a solo league with 20 teams that have all circle logo's. I wanted the logo's quick and it was just easier to make a circle logos.

I don't have a real prefence of logo to use, but for me they need to include town and nick name.

In online leagues, especially with fictional leagues, you don't have the instant recognizability of the simple, overlapping "N Y" or the red "B" that the Yankees and Red Sox have gotten away with for decades, simply because most teams are made up and recognition takes time.

That said, I guess that the logos with both nickname and origin would be just as popular as such logos are in college sports, where a very high percentage include name and origin(College name).

My 2 cents.

For fictional leagues it's best to have the city and name since most are unfamiliar with the logo. In MLB based leagues, there really isn't a preference for me.

This thread and one on the Discussions Forum have inspired me to start another league.

I went to enuttage's great Logo Bank and found about 29 logos with fictional names that I liked and will select 12 for my new league. I selected quite a few that had only the city or nickname, but not both. That's a first for me.

I am getting excited about my new league.

The reason circular logos are probably best for OOTP is simply because of the size requirement, which is a 150x150 pixel square. To make the most out of that amount of real estate, a circular logo is the most efficient (other than a square one, of course, but few real-world team logos are defined squares, while a great many are circular).

One could create an asymmetric logo, but due to the square size allotted to logos in OOTP, you're going to be leaving a lot of empty space either at the sides or the top and bottom. The drawn area of the logo will thus be smaller as compared to using a circular one.

basically is was the exact reason that I was going to give. No instant regocnition like IRL.

Another note is that the 150x150 size isn't actually all that small, it's because that in most part of the game, the logos are shrunk down to smaller sizes that's causing the irregular-shaped logos to look bad. If the logos are shown at their full size in all the places, logos in any help would look just fine. For reference, consider the free agent signing screen where the team logo displayed on the right hand side is in its full size. Just my 2-cent.

That's a good point too.

Which is why I've suggested several times that it would be great if OOTP7 could display the logos at the full size wherever they appear so as to avoid the issue.

It seems that won't be happening, though Markus has said that the code to handle the shrinking of logos on some screens would be a lot better in the new game, so perhaps that will help some.

Well, even though that sounds disappointing, but in the end I think that's a good decision since this is a text-based simulation game where statistics should be the main priority. Therefore if Markus decides to display a logo that takes up so much space in its fullest size on every screen, it would only mean less stats and/or information could be displayed at the same time; which would ultimately be even more annoying than a mere crappy looking logo. Just my 2-cent.

I don't disagree, but on the other hand, 150x150 is not exactly a huge chunk of screen space, and I think with a bit of clever design one could squeeze in the full size logo on the appropriate screens.

Personally, I'd love to see the ability to have logos for individual leagues in the game as well. Since I've done a couple of league logos, it'd be great to see those usable in the game rather than strictly for web sites.
