Why should I care that Sheryl Swoopes is gay?
ESPN.com has the story about Sheryl Swoopes being gay plastered across the front page. CBSSportsline, FOX Sports, and SI.com all have the story linked from their main page. All of this hoopla makes me wonder:
WHO REALLY CARES IF SHERYL SWOOPES IS GAY?!?!?!?!

Sadly in 2005 this is still an issue.

Who cares?
Perhaps people who feel that sexual orientation should not be a stigma that makes others think a person only of a certain sort can play sports. Saying being gay or not should not matter at all ignores a lot of history and establishment in sports that remains rather anti-gay and some may believe perhaps implicitly endorses those ways by saying light should not be shone on them. Perhaps publicizing things like this or that Doug Williams won a Super Bowl so blacks can play quarterback might actually serve to help spur social change. |

That's the issue at hand. I'm not saying what my opinion is, just throwing out there what is going through the minds of the media. |

I'm a bit surprised that this is such a big story. Isn't the WNBA viewed as a lesbian sport anyway?

Exactly - when I saw the story that she came out, I thought it meant she admitted she was straight

Simple, because George Bush hates gay people, we should all be concerned for her safety... |

I see the point, but it's a silly generalization.
We should care because if she comes out, who is going to come out next? Probably not any male athletes, because they are too "macho" to admit to such things, but it opens the door for gays in athletics. We all know we are out there, but we are scared to admit it ourselves. |

The only reason to care is that she's making her private sex life a public issue. What she does behind closed doors is her business, especially if she knows that a large group of citizens won't approve of what she's doing. (Whether or not that's right or wrong is beside the point for this particular issue.)
She wasn't outed by someone else...this was something she willingly did and that's why you should be concerned. Next to come, when a sponsor doesn't want to renew it's because they're homophobic and not because they want to take their marketing in a different direction or use a younger, fresher faced player than the veteran Swoopes. |

hmm I suppose
myself I woudln't know her if I fell over her (which being a WNBA player would probably be quite a challange), so it dones't really matter to me
