patch download question

I'm about to purchase OOTP6, and will eventually want the 6.5b patch.
My question is, do I have to download the game, and then the 6.12 patch, before I purchase the 6.5b patch? Or, is there anything in particular (besides the game) that I should download prior to the 6.5b patch?

...and, once I've downloaded the patches, is it obvious what to do with them?

Sorry, I've been looking around and haven't been able to find the answers.

6.5 will only work with a copy of v6 installed and licensed on the PC.

You can install it on it's own or over v6 either way you choose.

I realize that this must sound really stupid, but what does it mean to install it "over v6?"

Also, if I install 6.5b, is it a comprehensive patch? Specifically, does it contain all the fixes and updates of all the previous patches?

Some people just installed v6.5 OVER their v6 which is fine but it can be installed BY ITSELF in a totally different directory meaning that you could play EITHER v6 OR 6.5.
