The New Cavalier?

Breaking news on ESPN.com says that Larry Hughes will sign with Cleveland for 5 years totalling $65-70 Million. I love this, seeing as how I wanted Hughes much more than the Redd or Allen.

Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, 5 to 4; I don't believe what I just saw! I don't believe what I just saw!

Hughes is a little cheaper than Allen and Redd, right?

Hughes was a big reason for Washington's play-off push last season. Considering Cleveland finished only three games behind the Wizards record wise, you've got to like the odds for the Cavs considering their competition's loss is their gain.

This is good news, considering he actually knows how to play defense.

However, Luke, Mr. Jackson, get used to the three point line, we are gonna need it.

Now they need a PG. McInnis is a bandaid on a position that needs a transplant.

Aren't they in need of a serviceable bigman, esp. since Ilgaskus is leaving?

Where do you get that Ilgauskus is leaving? That's far from a foregone conclusion. After all, new Cavs GM Danny Ferry and Z are very good friends and if any kind of agreement that would benefit both sides can be reached, it would be between these two. Not that I think bringing Z back would be the best option, but given the options out there Z may be the best out there (aside from any sign and trade options).

Since they have another Lithuanian on the team now, who is 7-3, bringing back Z would be clutch.

Larry Hughes is an excellent basketball player.

Look for the Cavs to make a SERIOUS run at the NBA championship next season.

Are they as good as Jordan/Pippin? No. But, they are pretty damned good.

Considering James and Hughes have never stepped on the court as teammates before, I think it's a bit preemptive to mention the Jordan/Pippen duo, even with the disclaimer that they aren't as good.

I think this was probably the best move left on the table for them, but that's a hell of alot of long-term money for a guy whose only year where he met expectations was a contract year.

Hughes is a nice player and will help Cleveland. However he isn't the type of player they really needed. He's a 2nd scorer for them but he's not a great shooter. Cleveland really needed a big time 3point threat like Allen or Redd. Hughes isn't that type of player, so while they got a good player they didn't totally solve their problem.

Larry Hughes was a very good player last season, but it remains to be seen if he can keep it up. According to PER, Larry was the 23rd best player in basketball last season, which is great. However, the year before he was the 9th best shooting guard in the NBA and that had been his best season to that point. If he can continue the level of production he put up last year (which was higher than both Ray Allen and Michael Redd, btw) he's a fantastic addition. If he slips back a bit, he'll still be good, but he won't be what the Cavs think they are getting. All that said, if they bring back Z the Cavs will be a very good bet for the first playoff appearance of the LeBron era.

Look for the Cavs to make the playoffs and get eliminated by a #3 seed in the first round. They'll be better, but serious runs are a couple of years away.

Some reporter from the Cleveland Plain Dealer was on Sportcenter last night saying Hughes is actually a better fit than Redd or Allen because new coach Mike Brown is a defensive coach and Hughes is a perfect fit for his system. I agree they need an outside shooter, but it doesn't have to be Hughes. I read this morning they are negotiating with one of the top guards in Europe right now, a guy who happens to be tight with Z-man. I guess Boston and Indiana are also going after this guy, but the total coup would be resigning Z and pulling in this guy and then maybe we're talking about a serious playoff run. It's all crap without Z though.

He's a fine acquisition, but it still remains to seen whether last season was an abnomaly or not. The team still needs to add a shooter. Luke Jackson coming back will help, but with Hughes and James chewing up the majority of minutes at the wings, it'll be tough to fit him in unless they run James at point guard, and then have Hughes and Jackson on the wings. I assume they are satisfied with McInnis at point guard, but he's really nothing more than a stop gap solution for now. He was an asset last year, being the only one on the Cavs other than James to really be able to create his own shot, but with Hughes on board, the usefulness of his best abilities are really diminished. Look for the Cavs to look for a strong shooting point guard through a trade next year or in free agency next year.

Yeah, the best idea for the Cavs is to follow the Bulls formula of the Jordan title years. Use James a the point forward, Hughes can fill the Jordan role (only not anywhere remotely approaching his level of play) and find someone to fill the Steve Kerr/John Paxson type role.
