Waiver Claims: How much is too much?
Does anyone have an idea of how many players are signed off of waivers per year in MLB?

But this report doesn't show players taken off the 40 man roster, which involves waivers...

I have absolutely no idea if this is accurate but I copied this from a MLB blog...
The MLB Waiver Wire is not something that is disclosed to the public or the media. General Managers are bound not disclose any information about the waiver wire, and if they do they are breaking rules. Players placed on waivers are kept secret, unless they get claimed. A daily e-mail is sent to all General Managers at around 2:00PM Eastern Time everyday giving them a list of players on waivers, transactions approved the Comissionner’s Office that day and other similair items. |

go here: http://retrosheet.org/transactions/index.html
select a year and then Find 'claimed' this will show you all players claimed on waivers. For calendar year 2004, I counted 43 players claimed, 2003, 54 players claimed |

Quick simmed a few seasons using CBL's 2004 rosters (I'm an ex-Expo fan so I still want them there). In 6.12, 4+ star prospects like Justin Morneau, Sean Burroughs, Hee Seop Choi and Chin-Hui Tsao all got claimed on irrevocable waivers practically every season. In 6.5 it's improved: it's rarer but it still happens occasionally (maybe one or two a year). I could live with it, but as the thread title might imply the waivers still could use a little tweak.

50 players claimed in the most recent season of the career I posted: http://www.younglifenorthdekalb.com/ootp65/ltrans.html
Sounds like that is definitely within the realim of believability. Interestingly enough, when increasing evaluation percentages on ratings, the number of claims per year goes up into the 60's-80's in most seasons. I'd speculate that with high ratings evaluation percentage, the AI becomes more aggressive in promoting and demoting players who are ready/not ready before their stats show it. |
