Please explain this to me

Please explain why ERA+ is so low. I would assume it would be much higher

ERA+ is a low-bad / high-good stat.

Much better FIP. I'd work on the team defense....

Please explain this to me

ERA+ is a stat that adjusts for league factors. 100 indicates league average.

ERA+, OPS+, wRC+ are baseline 100 stats.
Anything over 100 = above average
Anything under 100 = below average

So a 120 ERA+ is 20% above league average ERA
A 80 ERA+ is 20% below league average

tejdog,

You are correct about OPS+ and wRC+. Anything above 100 is above league average and conversely anything below 100 is below league average. However ERA+ is just the opposite. Just wanted to clear up any confusion.

FIP also only covers the things that pitchers historically have a lot of effect on so it tends to be much, much more predictive. The BABIP the past 2 seasons looks like it's been unsustainably high - it averages around .290 in the modern era and .360 is crazy high, like if every batter he faced was Rod Carew or Ichiro Suzuki - so I'm not even sure that "improve your fielding" will help as much as "just let him keep pitching" will (I mean, obviously if you let him keep pitching *and* improve the fielding it would help, too).

No, ERA+ is high-good / low-bad; it's exactly the same as wRC+ and OPS+.

tejdog,

My apologies.

Mathbandit,

Thank you for catching my error. I realize what I did now. For some reason I confused ERA+ and FIP-. Moral to the story? Don't take drugs kids! Drugs are bad m'kay!? Seriously though I am on prescription meds for severe chronic pain that messes me up. I hate taking the stuff but have no choice at this point. Long story involved. Anyway, apologies again tejdog.

Easy mistake to make! It's counter-intuitive since ERA (and just about every other pitching rate stat) is usually a "low is good" stat.

Oh. Legit did not know that. Is it the same for FIP+ and FIP-?

edit: nevermind lol. I see I was right. All good.

I believe the minus is used to highlight the pitching (league/park-adjusted) stats which use intuitive low-good / high-bad scale.

So ERA+ and FIP+ 120 is 20% better, and ERA- and FIP- 80 is 20% better than league average.
