Just frustrating as hell

I am now running into a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library when trying to load my league.
I love this game, i really do, but I am beyond frustrated at the level of knowledge needed in the tech arena to play.
I lost a prior league with 100 pages of blogging done and it was not recoverable.
Now I am 20+ years into another and I guess I'm at wits end.
No idea what to do at this point. The window the error pops up is blank with an X enclosed in red and nothing else.
I know how much hard work has been done but I feel like I'm on my last leg with the amount of time and effort I put into this game to just randomly lose everything seems insanely wrong

Typically a Visual C++ error means you need an updated version of the Microsoft Visual C++ package. You can download that below:

When the error comes up loading a league though, I'm not 100% sure that will fix things. It may be that the league is corrupted.

If you've been having multiple corrupt leagues, which it sounds like has been the case, then maybe it's not just a one off but there may be something going on with your system that's creating the corruption.

There are a few things that can cause league corruption.

This potentially includes unexpected system/game shutdowns or crashes especially while a league is saving, bad sectors on the hard drive the game is saved to, memory glitches on your computer (especially possible if the league is left open for very long periods of time without the game being shut down or restarted) or occasionally interference from other programs.

Some of what you might do to prevent that from coming up again would be to regularly defrag your hard drive as well as check it for errors, make sure to shut down OOTP when you're not playing it, especially not keeping a league open for long periods of time while doing something else, occasionally shut your computer off or at least restart it and also run as few other programs in the background at the same time as OOTP as possible.

For programs on your system that need to be running at the same time, like an anti-virus or firewall, it's a good idea to add OOTP to their whitelist.

Hi - the above post looks like some guidance I may need in the future. I just bought the game for the first time Tuesday night. Loved it. Simuiated the 2019 Nationals season, then took over for the playoffs, had a magical run to the LCS, just won a 16-inning game vs. Mets, and then CRASH. And the magical run was missing the previous 5 games. Ugh.
So you're suggesting not leaving it open for long periods, and not having a lot of stuff running in the background? Will try it. Am on a Mac, wondering if it would've made a difference to buy from the App Store vs directly from your site?

Again, here I am out of my wheelhouse a bit, but X's enclosed in red with blank pages are typically indicative of a pic process gone wrong or frozen. Consider the times you've looked at email and seen those, or similar, instead of downloading a picture. Sometimes this is systems settings, sometimes this is the website, and in others....well, others.

What little I do recall in this area includes turning off hardware acceleration. If it's a problem associated with when something loads, this 'may' slow down that hurdle.

I know it's frustrating. I'm trying to align 24 team's field and camera views and I'm ready to see if 2D still looks appealing to me! Yikes... At any rate, are you aware of it occurring a specific time loading- watching the text line scroll about stages -or is it just a clusterfrick at any given moment?

I'm having the same issue, and here's the background. This league ran flawlessly for about 100 years, then started getting "runtime error" crashes at random times. Sometimes on Jan.1, sometimes on opening day, sometimes on the first day of the offseason. The crashes have become more and more frequent.


I've tried everything that's been posted previously (reinstalling Microsoft Visual C + +, deleting the "faces.dat" file from the saved game folder, and ensuring that my drivers are all up to date.)

I can't even print screen to show you what it looks like. It hangs up loading the last game played during the importing players period, always at 50%.

No, when I am on that screen it will not allow me to print screen. I have been doing it for years so I know it's not user error.

It's not going to be a hard disk memory error, it'll be that your pagefile is running out of room to operate. Your C: drive, which is going to be where Windows puts the pagefile unless you tell it otherwise, looks very, very low. The pagefile is basically what your computer uses when it runs out of RAM to use, and ironically (I mean, it's not ironic at all; it's just how computers work, but it feels ironic) the more RAM you have, the more space you need to keep open for that pagefile. Generally speaking you want to keep about double your RAM as your pagefile size. It makes some sense that OOTP in particular would die when you run out, since OOTP is very memory intensive, especially when loading up a massive league with a long, long history.

My recommendations here:

1. If you can, and you probably can, free up space on your C: drive by moving programs you've installed on it from there to D: or E:.

1a. If your C: drive is an SSD, which seems to be the industry standard nowadays, you really only want your OS on there plus the pagefile. Windows will try to default to add, like, everything else there, and sometimes you do have to have programs that sit on both C: and another drive (Visual Studio is kind of notorious for this) but basically the only other situation you'd ever want to put an entire program on your C: drive if you're running from an SSD is if you have a graphics-intensive game that you want to get high performance from.

2. If, after moving programs, you still don't have enough room.... change the location of your Users folders to D: or E: and move all the files inside over there. Those folders can eat up a *ton* of space. This is kind of a pain in the ass to do though so I don't recommend doing it first, not if you've got, like, some 20GB game you can offload from your C: drive first.

3. If all else fails - and I do *not* recommend doing this if your C: drive is an SSD - change the location of your pagefile to D: or E: or at least add D: or E: as potential locations for it. If you have an SSD, it runs a lot faster than a standard hard drive and running your pagefile on anything other than your SSD is going to make everything go a *lot* slower.

IIRC, the last time I did this on a computer I had to manually transfer a lot of files from my C: to my D: drive as well - if memory serves, your computer will begin to use that other drive *next*. That being said, if it takes several minutes (or longer, depending on how full that folder is) to do this, your computer is probably doing all the work of transferring the user folders over for you.

To the dev team: is there a sticky with recommendations like this on it?

Are you 100% sure? Some programs do try to disable print screen but on Windows it's CTRL-ALT-PrtScr. From there you just open Paint and hit CTRL-V to paste it into that program.

I can't thank you enough. I went with option 2 and moved my user files. To my disdain, it didn't change a thing. Not sure I've ever been more disappointed in software as I am now. We're 21 iterations in and the crashes are seriously game killers. I bit my tongue and decided to create a new league complete with feeders, after four hours I clicked save and the game crashed, didn't save a thing. That should not be happening with software that's had this many years to develop. I hate to say it like that because I love the game and the people behind it and I guess my level of disappointment reveals that. To think of the hundreds to almost thousands of hours that vanished is a tough one to swallow.

Whatever and however you do it, you’ll need to get around 32 gigs of space free at least, maybe even 40 or more, free on your C: drive...

Otherwise, if the game is dying after you create new games now, I’d uninstall and reinstall. My experience is that the game is categorically not buggy like this. It crashed a couple times on me the first week but other than that I’m not seeing it die over and over again.

The game trace above shows an out of memory error, meaning that something in your game got beyond the 3gb or so that the game is allowed to use. Generally speaking, at full history and stats, I think we can run for about 100-150 years on a league, so if you're pushing much beyond that, or your universe has many league and elaborate leagues, you may simply be running into a situation like that.

For that, you may need to reduce some of the stats collection settings to store less information to be able to continue. If that's not the case, there may be something else going on causing the out of memory issue when it shouldn't happen.

If you can let us know some more specifics about the league setup, and when exactly it does crash, we might be able to suggest more that we can look into.

Matt, if we have a machine with a good processor, plenty of RAM and page file size, and plenty of free disk space, why is the game limited to only use 3gb before shutting down?
