THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 14, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1914: For the first time since the early part of the century, there are no clear-cut favorites in either league. In the AL, Washington could stay on top, but noone would be surprised if the Red Sox or Athletics rebound to the pennant. The Bronchos and Yankees could also be in the thick of things. The Braves feel that they let down their fans in the World Series last season. Another pitcher is a definite need in the clubhouse. Down in Brooklyn, they've decided to see if they can can some of that renaming magic. They will no longer be called the Superbas, but instead are now the Robins.

Prospect Watch: PAUL "WOODY" WOODWORTH

Woodworth is a rare talent. When first witnessing him play, scouts raved at his sweet stroke. He has the potential to win the batting title as well as compile the most homeruns and bat in the most runs...a "Triple Crown" that has never been done before. Some may say that we're jumping the gun with this young man, but he is developed enough that he should start in AAA and make it to the big leagues by the All Star break...if not sooner. Barring any unforeseen problems, of course. After all, we were pretty excited about a certain player named Brad Vest, too

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 14, ISSUE 2

SEPTEMBER 22, 1914: Parity is the name of the game in both leagues, and in the AL, the Athletics took advantage of the balance of power to claim one more pennant in what is likely Napoleon Lajoie's final year. Quite a fitting finale to a stellar year. The Senators had a rush at the end of September, winning 9 of their last 10, but the A's lead was too big to overcome. The World Series may be a harder task, however. This is not the overpowering team to which we became accustomed. Lajoie has relegated himself to occasional pinch-hitting and managing from the bench.

As in the American League, the race was tight to the final week. The Cubs and Giants were neck and neck until New York faltered in their last couple series. The Cubs are a unique team, with very few standout players...just solid consistency. Will that be enough?

I doubt I'll ever be able to speed this up to more than 4 or 5 seasons per week. Catobase is taking forever (even though I love the results). I just finished 1914 and it took nearly 14 hours to run it. At this rate, it will take me 4 days when I get to 2000

That is the only drawback to Catobase. I've been running it on my solo league. The 3rd season took about an hour and a half.

But you can't not do it. The results are just too much fun.

PROSPECT WATCH

ROY HOBBS: Another solid year from Roy. It's unlikely that he'll reach 2000 hits because he didn't reach his full potential until he was 27, but he still is special in the hearts of many fans.

BEN "CORNBREAD" BALEYI: Cornbread spent 2 weeks in AAA before being promoted to the big leagues where he immediately took the starting 3b job in Philly. He needs a bit more work with the bat, but his fielding is just fine. The Gold Glove was a big clue.

If Catobase tracks it? Come on! Catobase tracks the average number times each plater grabs his crotch per game (Sam Kingma leads in that category, by the way...4.18 times per 9 innings )

1914 WORLD SERIES

9/23/1913 - GAME 1 ATHLETICS 1 - CUBS 3

Despite allowing only 3 hits, "Death Valley Jim" Scott handed out 5 free passes, which led to 3 runs by the Cubs and a Game 1 loss for the Athletics.

9/24/1913 - GAME 2 ATHLETICS 2 - CUBS 3, 10 innings

It took more than 9 innings to decide Game 2. In extra innings, "Cactus Gavvy" Cravath slapped a walkoff RBI single to knock in the winning run. Doc Ayers pitched the entire 10 innings for the Cubs.

9/26/1913 - GAME 3 CUBS 9 - ATHLETICS 10

Harry Lumley went 5 for 5 and backup outfielder Claude Cooper had 4 hits as well in this high-scoring affair that finally garnered a win for the Athletics in front of the hometown crowd.

9/27/1913 - GAME 4 CUBS 4 - ATHLETICS 3

It looks like these Athletics aren't up to the form of previous pennant-winners from Philly. The Cubs squeaked by behind Tom Hughes' second win. One win more and the Cubs gain the crown.

9/28/1913 - GAME 5 CUBS 3- ATHLETICS 6

The Athletics' 2nd through 5th batters combined for 8 hits to save them from elimination. Rube Bressler and 3 relievers combined to hold off the Cubs.

9/30/1913 - GAME 6 ATHLETICS 8 - CUBS 0

Back in the Windy City, the Athletics refused to lie down and die. Ed Smith smothered the Cubs' bats, allowing only 2 hits, and Zaza Harvey knocked in 3. A grinning Napoleon Lajoie was seen relaxing on the bench. Game 7, here they come!

Scott and Hughes dueled yet again, but this time it was the man from Death Valley who prevailed. Zaza Harvey came up with another 3 clutch RBI, including a 5th inning 2 run bomb. The A's complete their unlikely comeback by stroming the field and carrying Lajoie off on their shoulders despite the fact that he only had one hitless at-bat. What a way to end his career.

Don't generate the pages until your done simming for the day. Or run i the next day. You can import a season. Stop. Import the next season. Then generate pages.

In the team output section, be sure to select "Current Year Only". No reason for old seasons to be regenerated every time. This, of course, could not be done if you do option 1 & don't generate every season.

Don't generate player pages until you're done simming for the day. Import stats & just generate "Current Year Olny" for teams & gen. leaderboards. When you've simmed a few seasons, generate player pages then when you can walk away for an hour.
