Yep, it's been a long, long short season for the Black Cats. But they did have a 5-3 lead over first place Jackson late in the game last weekend. |

I just extend the regular season schedule with the necessary playoff games... the team with the best record wins it.
I think the worst it will be will be a two-way tie. I decided to promote and relegate only one team from each league to avoid all the possible ties that could come about.... a 10-game schedule doesn't spread out the teams very much. Bar Harbor and Columbia could tie for last place in the SI Supreme League... might have to play them off to decide who goes down to the SI Secondary League... there could be playoffs for first place in both leagues, too. It can get a little tangled in a very short season like I play... but I really enjoy playing out all the games in the one-pitch mode... I may just try to play out a game pitch-by-pitch... that might be interesting. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-07-2021 at 01:12 PM. |

Monday, June 6, 1955 JACKS 1955 SUPREME CHAMPS, BUT FALL TO CAJUNS... OAKS AND BRUINS TIE FOR 2ND... STARS FALL TO 4TH PLACE... SUPREME LEAGUE SAYS SO LONG TO BLACK CATS What a season! The South Island Supreme League wrapped up its first season Sunday with a bevy of business... Jackson won the inaugural pennant... Pelham and Braxton tied for second place... Delta dipped to the 4th spot in the standings... and poor Columbia is saying sayonara to the SI Supreme League... the last place Black Cats are being relegated to the South Island Secondary League. Despite not needing a win to avoid possible relegation, Bar Harbor did it anyway... they upended the league champion Jackson Jackalopes 8-3... the Pelham Oaks dumped the Delta Stars 6-2 in an important clash and claimed a second-place tie with the Braxton Bruins... the Oaks and the Bruins wound up 6-4 this season, while the Stars dipped to 5-5 and fourth place... and Braxton crushed Columbia 16-6 in the other ballgame. MY LIFE IN 1955
EC's Tryin' To Survive in '55 Time to once again check in on my beloved Southern Association... it's early in June, about a month into the season... my New Orleans Pelicans are doing pretty well... 27-20 in third place, just 2 and a half games out of first place... my Mobile Bears are not doing well... 19-29 in 7th place and trailing by 11 games... the Chattanooga Lookouts and Atlanta Crackers are running 1-2 in the SA with the Memphis Chicks in fourth place... the Birmingham Barons and Nashville Vols are clinging close by... looks like a good tight race this year in the Southern Association. Mobile is led by a couple of ex-Pacific Coast League and International League players, third base Jim Baxes and second baseman Dick Young... after a very poor start, the Bears picked up Baxes and Young from the parent team, the Dodgers, and have perked up a little bit in the last week or so... Baxes will play for the LA Dodgers and Cleveland Indians in 1959... most of his experience was in the PCL and Triple A... he batted .246 with 17 homers and 39 RBIs in his only year in the majors... just a fair fielder... but Baxes will drive in runs and hit homers... future Baltimore Oriole star first baseman Jim Gentile is in the lineup... after a great start in MLB, Gentile had the misfortune of future Hall of Famer Eddie Murray joining the Orioles and lost his spot in the lineup... however, Gentile played 9 seasons in the majors, batted .260 with 179 HRs and 549 RBIs... Gentile batted .292 with 21 HR and 98 RBI in 1960... hit .302 with 46 HR and 141 RBIs in 1961 and batted .251 with 33 HR and 87 RBI in 1962... future Dodger, Phillie, Tiger and Red Sox outfielder/infielder Don Demeter is also playing for Mobile... he was a fine center fielder and hitter for the Bears... Demeter played 11 years in the Major Leagues, hit .265 with 163 HRs and 563 RBIs... Ralph Mauriello is a hard-throwing right-hander... he is their best pitcher... Connie Grob and Earl Mossor are starters, too... Bob Walz is the top reliever... one of my all-time favorite Bears, outfielder Ray Shearer, is back... he has starred for the team for the last few years... Mobile is down near the bottom of the league standings right now, but if my memory is right, this will be a very memorable season for me and the Bears... it's not over till it's over... stay tuned. New Orleans is led by first baseman Bob Skinner... he is a future Pittsburgh Pirate, Cincinnati Red and St. Louis Cardinal... Skinner played 12 years in the Major League and batted a respectable .277 with 103 homers and 531 RBIs... he had several seasons with a .300 BA... Baltimore Oriole great skipper Earl Weaver is at second base for the Pels... he was good field, no hit... Weaver is down from the Pacific Coast League... he played with the Denver Bears in 1954 and batted .283... Weaver will soon become a minor league playing manager at Montgomery/Knoxville in 1956 at age 25, starting at the Class A and Class D level and winding up winning lots of World Series with the Baltimore Orioles... Gair Allie is the shortstop... he played for Pittsburgh in 1954, but only hit .199 in 121 games... ended up just a journeyman minor league shortstop, playing until 1961... catcher Danny Kravitz is a future Pirate, but he only hit .234 for 5 years in the Major Leagues and was just a fair defensive catcher... he was only a backup... nothing more... 1955 was his best year... he would hit .298 with 19 homers and 88 RBIs for New Orleans. The box scores are from the New Orleans Times-Picayune... sorry, they had to abbreviate the players' names in the lineup... they are usually correct in the body of the box score.
Perusing the Baseball Barometer I see where there are only 6 teams in the Class D Evangeline Line... it will not be around much longer... AC and TV killed minor league baseball. I see it might be a long season for Stan the Man and my Cardinals... the dastardly Dodgers are off and running... so are the New York Yankees. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-09-2021 at 05:37 PM. |

Monday, June 6, 1955 3-WAY TIE IN SI SECONDARY LEAGUE... SMILEYS HOST SAILORS IN FIRST ROUND... PELS GET THE BYE... ST. PETE AT HOME FOR PLAYOFF FINALS It will take two weekends of playoff baseball to decide the South Island Secondary League pennant winner... St. Pete, Grin Hill and Gull Lake ended up tied for the league crown with 7-3 records and will now play it off. All of the teams split the regular season games amongst them... the tiebreaker went to St. Pete... the Pelicans secured the invaluable bye via run differential... the Pels outscored their opponents 33-24 in the four games... Grin Hill was second best with 27-22... pulling up the rear was Gull Lake... the Sailors were outscored 14-28 in the regular season by the other playoff participants. Gull Lake will travel to Grin Hill in the first elimination game this coming Sunday afternoon... the winner will then hit the road the following Sunday to play St. Pete for the league title. The South Island Secondary League champion will be promoted to the South Island Supreme League next year. All this rigamarole was caused by Grin Hill when they handily trounced Gull Lake 9-1 last weekend... St. Pete made it a 3-way deadlock with a 4-2 victory over the Littleville Supermen... in a game of also-rans the Moon Valley Dreamers swatted the Billing Rams 8-2. I tried the White Skin out in both my leagues... I hadn't checked it for quite a few versions... still much prefer the Black Background... I find it easier on the eyes than the White glare... my graphics look better to me, too... better contrast for logos and jerseys.
Never did like the Brown Background... the OOTP Classic Skin... in my opinion, the colors just don't coordinate well. |

Monday, June 13, 1955 SAILORS SET SAIL FOR SI SECONDARY FLAG... MEET ST. PETE PELICANS NEXT SUNDAY FOR TITLE The Gull Lake Sailors got sweet revenge Sunday afternoon in Grin Hill, where they skimmed past the Smileys 6-5 in a sudden-death playoff game... Gull Lake will travel to meet the St. Pete Pelicans at Pelican Park next Sunday for the South Island Secondary pennant... the winner of the contest will be promoted upward to the South Island Supreme League next season... the Pelicans benefitted from a bye in the first round... they had the tiebreaker - the best-run differential between the three co-leaders. Monday, June 20, 1955 PELICANS WIN SI SECONDARY LEAGUE FLAG WITH A FANTASTIC COMEBACK IN 11 INNINGS In a fantastic finish to a truly fine season the St. Pete Pelicans wrapped up the South Island Secondary League pennant with a flourish coming back from an 11-run deficit to sink the beleaguered and befuddled Gull Lake Sailors 14-11 in a high-scoring homer-filled affair. The outlandish comeback gave St. Pete an 8-3 mark, one half-game better than Gull Lake at 8-4... the Pelicans will be promoted to the South Island Supreme League next year, trading places with the Columbia Black Cats (2-8). |

I thoroughly enjoyed the title game... really was something to play out all 11 innings in the one-pitch mode.
It was strangely better than watching a real-live game! I also thoroughly enjoyed the short season and the small leagues. Looking forward to season two of the South Island Supreme League and the South Island Secondary League. |
