MY LIFE IN 1955
EC's Tryin' To Survive in '55 Well, I think this will catch me up-to-date in the world of sports in '54 and '55... my favorite basketball player George Mikan retired this season due to aches and pains and leg injuries, but he got out before he declined as a player... the Minneapolis Lakers had won the NBA title in his last season... Mikan was still quite a player... there is nothing worse than to see a great athlete when old father time gets to him... but rarely will they quit on top... they almost always play too long. Minneapolis was dethroned this year by the Syracuse Nationals sparked by Dolph Shayes and Paul Seymour... the Nats defeated the Fort Wayne Pistons in the NBA Finals in a stirring 7-game series 4 games to 3... Larry Foust and Andy Phillip paced the Pistons... all games were decided by 7 points or less.. the home team won every game... without Mikan the Lakers were not the same... they lost to Fort Wayne 3-1 in the second round... the NBA Rookie of the Year is one of the all-time greats and one of EC's all-time favorites, the great Bob Petit of the St. Louis Hawks and the LSU Tigers... Petit was a great player and a wonderful person... he lives in my hometown, Baton Rouge, and is a very successful banker and human being... he will soon be 89 years young... Petit is a lot like my all-time favorite player Stan "the Man" Musial... they both personify nothing but class... on the field and off the field... God made two good ones when he shared Musial and Petit with the world of sports... George Mikan, too. How great was Bob Petit?... in 1958 his St. Louis Hawks beat the greatest NBA team in history, the fabulous Boston Celtics with the greatest basketball player in history, Bill Russell... the Celtics didn't lost very often when Russell and his crew dominated the NBA like no one has ever done... Petit was the first NBA player to score 20,000 points. 1954-55 All-NBA Teams 1st Team Bob Cousy (Boston) Larry Foust (Fort Wayne) Neil Johnston (Philadelphia) Bob Pettit (St. Louis) Dolph Schayes (Syracuse) 2nd Team Harry Gallatin (New York) Slater Martin (Minneapolis) Vern Mikkelsen (Minneapolis) Paul Seymour (Syracuse) Bill Sharman (Boston) Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-27-2021 at 03:36 PM. |

Hurricane Ida is rapidly moving into my area... will probably be out of electricity for a few days, a week, or God forbid, even longer... Ida is a very bad storm.. say a prayer for the folks along the Gulf Coast.
Luckily, my subdivision is high and has never flooded... not even in the terrible August, 2016 flood in Louisiana. In recent years Hurricane Gustav was the worst one for my area in Baton Rouge... all I lost was my backyard fence... Rita bent it backward... Ike bent it to the front... and then Gustav knocked it completely down. Gloriously, no damage to my house or property. Will post as often as I can. Catch you later, alligator!

EC will try to stay high and dry and not get blown away.
I hope the worst we get is a few power outages. |

JACKSON WINS! JACKSON WINS! SOUTH ISLAND SUPREME LEAGUE CHAMP! Jackson got some huge help Sunday from the Delta Stars... the Stars bumped the Braxton Bruins out of the pennant chase with the Jackson Jackalopes with a 4-2 victory and gave the South Island Supreme League inaugural pennant to the Jacks... Jackson (7-2) is 2 games ahead in the race with only one game to go. But Jackson had to do something, too, to relish the glory... in a tough struggle, they whipped the stubborn Columbia Black Cats 6-5... in the other remaining game the Pelham Oaks (5-4) knocked off the Bar Harbor Acadians 5-1 and climbed up to a second-place tie with the Delta Stars and the Braxton Bruins... both teams are also 5-4. Poor last place Columbia (2-7) and fifth place Bar Harbor (3-6) are in danger of being relegated to the South Island Secondary League next season... the last place team is demoted each year from the SI Supreme League and the champion of the SI Secondary League gets promoted to the top league. Thanks for your prayers for EC and his lovely wife.
Remember the folks in South Louisiana... Hurricane Ida was a devastating storm... keep them in your prayers. All is well for EC... no damage to house... just no power... it's still out, but we can live in 87 degrees inside during the day... we open the windows in the evening and it cools down to a very pleasant 82. We spend a lot of time outside on the porch, sitting for a spell in the shade and hoping for a faint breeze... we sit on front porch in the morning and the back porch in the evening to avoid the hot sun... I am reading baseball books... Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn, who covered the Brooklyn Dodgers for two seasons in the early 50s... Kahn is some kind of good writer... he brings that day of time vividly to life for the reader... also finished a baseball compilation, but forgot the compiler... am now reading 5 Seasons by Roger Angell, I think... he covers 5 pennant races in the early 70s. For the last two afternoons my wife and I have gone to the East Baton Rouge Public Library... that's how got to post this... I am reading magazines to pass the time... the library is blessed with that wonderful thing called air conditioning. Some supermarkets are open, thank goodness... a few restaurants are serving minimal menus... but it's plenty to get by... many folks in the state have it far worse... I have it easy... there is no telling when New Orleans and South Louisiana will get its power restored...it might be months... Jefferson Parish (County), a suburb of New Orleans has advised its residents to leave town until the power is restored. Lines are real long for gasoline... most gas stations are out of gas... ice is a precious commodity and very hard to find... the best part of my day is sipping on an ice cold glass of ice cold water... I got three bags of ice yesterday... it takes it about 2 days to melt... wish me luck... hope I can find some more ice. We are fortunate indeed... the west wall of Hurricane Ida passed over us... really wasn't bad in my neighborhood... 100 mile an hour sustained winds... we are a new neighborhood with few trees... falling trees was a big problem... we just lost power. If the East Wall (that is where the damaging winds are in a hurricane) had hit us like it did in Hammond, Louisiana, where Southeastern Louisiana University is located, it would have done devastating damage... that area may go a month without power. Back in the old days of my youth, Funeral Homes used to give paper fans to churches so the congregation could fan themselves and fight off the hellfire and brimstone of a Sunday sermon... this was the days of no air conditioning in the 40s and 50s. My wife had two of those Funeral Home paper fans, cherished relics of a time gone by... Boy, they sure do come in handy right now! Will talk to you later. If I don't get power in the next day or so, I'm heading to Florence and Sheffield in Northwest Alabama, where all of my cousins live... they now have all kinds of modern conveniences like in-door toilets and air conditioning... twarn't that way back when I used to spend all my summers there in the 40s and 50s. Or I may just take another baseball trip for a week or so and go see some minor league games in Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina. EC's still having fun in 2021... my life could certainly be a whole lot worse... the Good Lord really looks out for me and my lovely little lady. EC is not a holy roller and I don't jump pews... but, "Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!... Praise the Lord!" Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-04-2021 at 04:34 PM. |

Monday, May 30, 1955 1 MORE WIN AND SI SECONDARY CROWN GOES TO GULL LAKE... ST. PETE AND GRIN HILL HANGING TIGHT It's still crowded at the top of the South Island Secondary League standings... the first place Gull Lake Sailors (7-2) are only one game up on the St. Pete Pelicans (6-3) and the Grin Hill Smileys (6-3), heading into the final turn and down the home stretch... the Sailors can win it all with a victory on the last day of the season...but Gull Lake will have to whip Grin Hill to take home the crown... St. Pete will also have a tough task to take care of... they will have to slug it out with the potent Littleville Supermen at Pelican Park... there is a good possibility of a two-way tie for the top spot. This past Sunday the Sailors trimmed the Moon Valley Dreamers at home 9-6... the Pelicans pelted the Billings Rams 7-1 and the Smileys outgunned the Littleville Supermen 14-8. Gull Lake edged Grin Hill in the first encounter this season... the Sailors slipped past the Smileys 4-3 at Smiley Field... while the Pelicans took 14 innings in Littleville to nick the Supermen 9-8... there's a lot of parity between the top 4 teams in the SI Secondary League... it will all come down to which teams have a good Sunday afternoon. Glad to hear you’re safe and well, EC. Over here in New York we even felt the effects of the Hurricane with flash floods all over the city and Long Island. Anyways, nice to see the Black Cats stinking it up haha.
