Are you going to leave Live Oak's career average as the standard? Kind of rough having a 4 year career in the 1880's be the record forever.

I was waiting for the 154-game schedule to become constant, which it has. I need to find out the ML minimum plate appearance and IP / GP requirements and make the change.

It's been 3.1 plate appearances per game and one IP per team game played for as long as I can remember. I believe the batting title rules were different at least back in Ted Williams' days.

It's more Live Oak's career number in such a short career that seems odd. Baseball arbitrarily started recounting a lot of records with 1901 at some point. Mostly because the batting average rules were different in the early days.

OK. I did want to change career requirements eventually but not too soon. I didn't want all old records to disappear in 1901. Now that we've had the 154-game schedule for about a decade, it's a good time.

Both Philadelphia teams got some help. Alexander's stats are ungodly!

Wow, I didn't remember that the A's get Jackson too. Plus McInnis, another piece of the $100,000 infield.

Should he be Grover Cleveland Alexander, "Pete"?

Perhaps, but he's listed on bb-ref.com as Pete.

The Giants were once again clearly the top team in the league. However, winning the pennant was tougher this year since the Pirates and Cubs stayed in the race until mid-September. At that point, the Giants went on a 5-1 run to put the lead out of reach. After that hot spurt, New York lost 8 of their next 11 (including 3 of 4 to Pittsburgh). It was not enough though, and the Giants made their 3rd straight World Series appearance.

Please let me know what you think of the new format. Is it too impersonal? Do the 1st initials instead of 1st names make it too hard to recognize players?

Boston and Philadelphia have simply dominated the American League. The two teams have finished 1-2 in each of the past four seasons, splitting the pennant over that period. The Athletics have finished 1st or 2nd in 9 of the past 10 seasons. Boston has done the same in 7 consecutive seasons. Philadelphia won the World Series in 1902 and 1903, while Boston won in 1907 and 1909. This season, the A's were not easy to keep up with, thanks largely to the emergence of rookie sensations Joe Jackson and Stuffy McInnis. Five regular A's hit over .300 and two-time Top Batter Bris Lord hit .290. As for Boston, 4-time Top Pitcher Norwood Gibson had his worst season, although he still won 21 games. Young Joe Wood took over the role of ace and is considered by many as the top hurler in the league at age 21. Detroit had enough gas to move into a tie for 3rd with New York. The Tigers won 23 more games than last season. CF Ty Cobb, just 24, carried the team on his back with a major league leading .384 average and 105 RBI for just the 5th best offense.

1911 World Series

BOX SCORES

Catobase Updated! Player pages not yet updated

Game 1 of the 1911 World Series turned out to be one of the finest of all time. Philadelphia SS John Knight hit a 2-run double off Rube Marquard in the top of the 7th to tie the score at 2-2. Marquard and Harry Krause did not allow another run and the game went to extra innings. Marquard pitched a 1-2-3 10th inning but was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the inning. Krause's replacement on the mound, Jimmy Dygert, allowed a single to Fred Snodgrass with two runners on base and one out in the bottom of the 11th. As the potential winning run came around third in the form of Fred Merkle, rookie LF Joe Jackson threw a bullet home and nailed Merkle at the plate. Art Fletcher then grounded out to end the inning. However, fate would not smile on Dygert in the 12th. He allowed two singles to lead off the inning. After recording the first out, Josh Devore singled to left-center and 2-time Top Batter Bris Lord misplayed the ball, allowing Larry Doyle to score and win the game.

In Game 2, Philadelphia led 2-1 after 8 innings. But in the bottom of the 9th, Snodgrass hit a solo homerun off reliever Eddie PLank, who entered the game in relief of Chief Bender just one batter earlier. That run tied the game. Then Plank allowed a single to Merkle, and a triple by SS Buck Herzog plated the winning run for the Giants.

Game 3 was yet another close contest. A sac fly by New York 3B Art Devlin tied the score at 2-2 in the 7th. Then in the 8th, the Giants scored two more runs off starter Weldon Henley. Philadelphia got one of those runs back on a sac fly by Frank Baker. Now down 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, A's pinch hitter Harry Armbruster drew a one-out walk off Red Ames. After a ground out moved pinch runner Rube Oldring to second, Ames unleashed a wild pitch that allowed the runner to move up to 3rd. Ames buckled down and got Ed Lennox to fly out to right field, ending the game and giving New York a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 series lead.

Trying to stay alive, the A's found themselves in another dog fight in Game 4. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th, CF Bris Lord got a one-out single off Marquard. Danny Hoffman came in to pinch run, and he scored when Fred Snodgrass dropped a ball off the bat of Joe Jackson. After Marquard struck out Stuffy McInnis, Frank Baker singled Jackson home to give the A's a 3-2 lead. And that was the final score.

The Giants took a 4-1 lead after 5 innings in Game 5, but the Athletics roared back with a 4-run 6th, highlighted by a bases loaded triple from SS John Knight, delighting fans at Shibe Park. But in the very next frame, Moose McCormick, who set a major league record with 125 RBI this season, hit a 2-run single off Chief Bender to put the Giants back on top 6-5. Things then fell apart for Bender in the 8th as he allowed 3 more runs, and the Giants went on to win the game and the series.

Winner, 4-1: New York Giants, 2nd Championship, 5th Pennant

Philadelphia Athletics, 4th pennant

According to bb-ref.com, the career leaderboard requirements are 3000 PA's for batters and just 1000 IP or 100 decisions for pitchers. I have it set to 2000/150 for pitchers. Live Oak has 3469 PA, so he will always be there unless I move it to 3500 or 4000.

How many years did he play? I thought it showed him only playing a few years. If he played 9 or 10, well then that's the record, unless you start showing pre and post 1900 records.

BTW, I like the new seasonal stat format. Easy to look for names.

Damn those A's are going to be NASTY for a long time.

IRL he played very little. Here he played full time for 6 or 7 seasons, winning 4 or 5 batting titles. He "slipped thru" in the pre-1900s when my policy for letting "nobodies" become stars was more lax. I try watching a little more closely now. But, LO has just under 3500 PA which would qualify him IRL. If I raised the minimum up to 5000 PA, the top 3 (including Pete Browning & the great Ross Barnes) would be gone, leaving King Kelly's .3400 avg as the new standard.

I like the new format, there are more stats and I didn't have a problem with the names. I did like seeing who was on the bench for the teams, but that's a minor thing.

Matt - I like the new format and as long as Catobase is available, the bench guys can be seen that way...I have spent many hours of "work time" browsing through that Catobase !!

I think I have a way to do the bench fairly easily. There's always the catobase link but sometimes that's not updated the same day as these lineups are posted, so I'll give the benches a shot for 1912.
