THE CHRONICLE - 1912 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPION: BOSTON RED SOX (86-68) Team Batting Average: .282 Team ERA: 3.80 Top Batters: "Shoeless Joe" Jackson - .364, 95 RBI, 60 SB Tris Speaker - .375, 118 RBI, 45 SB Fred Beck - .300, 84 RBI, 33 SB Top Pitchers: Glen Liebhardt - 13-5, 2.86 ERA, 67 K Hippo Vaughn - 14-21, 3.98 ERA, 164 K NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPION: NEW YORK GIANTS (93-61) Team Batting Average: .291 Team ERA: 3.28 Top Batters: Ty Cobb - .336, 93 RBI, 62 SB Sammy Strang - .360, 87 RBI, 40 RBI Joe Tinker - .329, 64 RBI, 41 SB Top Pitchers: Christy Mathewson - 30-9, 1.99 ERA, 255 K Jim St. Vrain - 20-16, 3.94 ERA, 197 K Ed Walsh - 25-16, 2.95 ERA, 181 K This is a rematch of last year and the teams are similar, but we are unlikely to see a 7 game series again. The Red Sox have improved their offense, but so have the Giants. The pitching, on the other hand, is an even bigger problem for Boston than it was in 1911. Their ace, Lou Schettler, strained his shoulder in the penultimate game of the season and will miss the entire series. Even with him they may have had a difficult time, but now the result is inevitable. Giants should match the Athletics with 3 straight championships rather easily. PREDICTION: Giants in 4 Last edited by metsgeek; 02-19-2005 at 03:10 PM. |

1912 WORLD SERIES
9/23/1912 - GAME 1 RED SOX 5 - GIANTS 8 Both teams were contentious throughout this messy game, with each team commiting 3 errors. Sammy Strang was ejected in the 5th for arguing a called 3rd strike, and whispers of favoritism on the part of the umps have begun to circulate. Above it all, Christy Mathewson just rolled right along and does what he always does....win in the postseason. 9/24/1912 - GAME 2 RED SOX 3 - GIANTS 6 Joe Jackson went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Red Sox in a lost cause as Ed Walsh held the rest of his team at bay. Walsh even helped his own cause with 2 RBI of his own. 9/26/1912 - GAME 3 GIANTS 9 - RED SOX 11 The Giants outhit the Sox 15-12 in the first game back in Boston, but 4 errors and an off day from Jim St. Vrain sunk them in this high-scoring affair. Amos Strunk had 3 hits and 4 RBI in the win. 9/27/1912 - GAME 4 GIANTS 9 - RED SOX 0 Christy Mathewson gave the Red Sox a whupping and the Red Sox defense took their turn at the error trough with 5. Bill Sweeney knocked in 3 for the Giants. 9/28/1912 - GAME 5 GIANTS 9 - RED SOX 3 Doc Miller gets 4 RBI and Ed Walsh shackles the Red Sox yet again, sending the Boston fans home without dessert and sealing the deal on the Giants' 3rd consecutive championship. 1912 WORLD CHAMPS - NEW YORK GIANTS 3rd Championship SERIES MVP: Christy Mathewson 2-0, 1.00 ERA, 10 Hits, 11 K, 18 IP |

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 13, ISSUE 1
JANUARY 1, 1913: The debate has already begun: Which dynasty is better...the Athletics of '07-'09 or the Giants of '10-'12 and counting. The Giants won more pennants, but they were defeated by the A's in 2 out of 3 of the World Series in which they met. This season will certainly add to that discussion. If the Giants repeat yet again, they should be able to lay claim to the title. If they fall, however, the argument for either side will continue for many years. The team most likely to knock them off their pedestal are the Red Sox, AL champions for the last two years, but to do so, they definitely need to get some pitching help. In other news, two teams changed their nicknames in the hopes of changing their luck. The New York Highlanders will now be called the Yankees, and the Boston Doves are now called the Braves. Prospect Watch: BEN "CORNBREAD" BALEYI 21 years old and he already has one of the best nicknames in the bigs. This strapping young man on the hot corner should advance quickly through the minor leagues. Rumor has it that his nickname was given to him by Napoleon Lajoie, who, upon seeing him play, said "That boy scoops up groundballs like a piece o' cornbread mopping up gravy on a plate." His talents aren't only in the field. He's pretty fast on the bases and knows how to make contact. he may be a huge longball threat, but you can be sure he'll leg out some doubles and triples. Talents (Contact/Gap/HR/Eye/Avoid K): 90/70/50/60/50 Current Ratings: 44/55/48/49/26 Last edited by metsgeek; 02-19-2005 at 04:48 PM. |

Ace of the Year: 1907, 1910-12 He's only 31 heading into this season, so he has a decent chance of reaching 400 wins. I had someone offer me webspace for Catobase, so I'll probably put it up if I can ever kick myself in the ass and stop procrastinating. |

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 13, ISSUE 2
SEPTEMBER 22, 1913: The Red Sox were unable to pull a miracle out of their hats this season. In fact, karma seemed to have come to collect the debt they owed as every ball bounced the wrong way at the wrong time. They did not win as may games as their run differential would make you think. Chalk it up to poor defense and pitching. For the first four months of the season, the Cleveland Bronchos led the way, but a season-ending injury to Frank Smith, one of their top starting pitchers, led to their downfall. The Senators swooped in and claimed the pennant in the last couple weeks. Code:

PROSPECT WATCH
ROY HOBBS: Hobbs and the Bronchos fell short of the Series after leading for most of the season. Time is running out for Hobbs. He only has 4 or 5 more years before likely retirement. Code:

On a side note, I gotta admit it's been pretty interesting watching how the development is all over the place the first few years of a player's career.

THE CHRONICLE - 1913 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPION: WASHINGTON SENATORS (86-68) Team Batting Average: .267 Team ERA: 2.96 Top Batters: John "Homerun" Heinz - .292, 17 HR, 104 RBI, 18 SB Joe Birmingham - .300, 53 RBI, 28 SB Al Burch - .304, 68 RBI, 18 SB Top Pitchers: Nap Rucker - 22-15, 2.38 ERA, 184 K Bob Groom - 22-10, 2.29 ERA, 158 K Irv Higginbotham - 19-18, 2.78 ERA, 148 K NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPION: BOSTON BRAVES (90-64) Team Batting Average: .275 Team ERA: 3.91 Top Batters: Alan Liao - .344, 72 RBI, 52 SB Jake Daubert - .313, 90 RBI, 52 SB Joe Connolly - .292, 79 RBI, 50 SB Top Pitchers: Lefty Leifield - 22-15, 3.35 ERA, 113 K Jake Scott - 24-11, 4.15 ERA, 333 K Slim Sallee - 23-13, 3.62 ERA, 106 K For the first time in 7 years, neither the Philadelphia Athletics nor the New York Giants will be in the World Series. Offensively both teams seem to be pretty evenly matched. Washington has a bit more power. Boston has more speed. On the pitching side, though, the Senators outclass the Braves pretty handily. Boston's Jake Scott has some nasty stuff, though. He could surprise them, or he could give up 10 walks and implode. Either way, we will have a new champion in a few days. PREDICTION: Senators in 6 Last edited by metsgeek; 02-20-2005 at 02:10 PM. |

1914 is about to begin, and I've decided to completely ignore the Federal League. Too much of a pain in the butt. I will do something when WWII rolls around, and I will have a random expansion dispersal, rather than a draft, whenever expansion comes up.
