Here, see if this dovetails with your thinking:
Quote:
Here’s a look at what the United States needs to do to advance to the Round of 16.

If the United States beats England:
The standings would be: United States 4, England and Iran 3, Wales 1.
The Americans would advance with a win or a draw against Iran.
If the United States loses to Iran, it would be eliminated if England beats Wales. If Wales beats or draws England, the group would come down to tiebreakers.

If the United States ties England:
The standings would be: England 4, Iran 3, United States 2, Wales 1.
The Americans would advance with a win against Iran. They would be eliminated by a draw or a loss.

If the United States loses to England:
The standings would be: England 6, Iran 3, United States and Wales 1.
If the United States then beats Iran, it would advance if England beats or draws Wales. If Wales wins, the group would come down to tiebreakers. The Americans would be eliminated with a draw or loss against Iran.
This was posted after this morning's win by Iran.

Unless the US boys win against England (unlikely at best), they always must win against Iran to advance. No arithmetics necessary.

No. I screwed it up. Iran has three points, only.

It doesn't matter what happens with goals in ANY game. If the US wins against Iran, they have four points, and go through.

The US could lose 15-0 today, and if they beat Iran, they go through.

You are correct sir. Thanks.

Having said that, England has disappointed before...

The English look very Portuguese. Beasts in the front, brittle in the back. That should easily get them through to the quarterfinals, when they could meet France.

Btw, my US friends, I want to warn you - if Jude Bellingham does something great I will not be able to hold back. I'll tear off my shirt and run around the room shirtless. It's not the prettiest sight!

The US has to win one of the next two matches or they're out.

Alexi Lalas just claimed that the US would beat England 2-0.

Alexi Lalas is an idiot. I have a FIFA game where he is a Legend, with a rating of 85 or 86, can't remember. A good defender, but not too smart.

Yep. Very impressed with the US in the first half. Way beyond my expectations.

I don't think a tie does much for them. They'll still need to beat Iran.

A tie removes Wales from the equation for the US, because they couldn't tie for second place anymore:

England 4
Iran 3
USA 2
Wales 1

So a W against Iran would advance the USA for sure, while if they lose to England, and then beat Iran, they could still get punted on goal difference by Wales beating England.

Wales beating England might sound unlikely, but I also considered England not winning this one handily just as unlikely until about an hour ago.

I can't watch. Jesus.

Pusilic looks like a nice player for the US side, as does Adams.

So at what point are they supposed to start trying?

I can't believe some people pay to watch this sport in person.

Absolutely correct. If you had the sound off, you wouldn't be able to tell which team was England.

I am feeling HUGELY better about the US's chances to advance now.

I never thought it likely the US would win, so that's a nice draw. We remain unbeaten against England in the WC.

(Won 1-0 in 1950, drew 1-1 in 2010, now this.)

HOWEVER…I'm so sick of hearing "all we have to do is beat Iran". Yeah, and all Iran has to do is draw. That's a huge advantage, especially as we're not overloaded with scoring.

And I'm old enough to remember the Iranians basically dancing on our graves in 1998 because they were motivated by their hatred of the global bully from the decade before. Perhaps things are different now, but it's not as if American Imperialism is a dead issue for the rest of the world. They could still be especially motivated because of our using Iraq as a proxy to attack them for most of the 1980s.

**************************

Speaking of how old I am, it's scary to think that Claudio Reyna's son is now the USNT's wunderkind. I can remember when Claudio himself was the new sensation who was going to lead us to the next level. Sigh.

Off to read the UK papers and laugh at how much they must be crying. Even if we might be going home on Tuesday.

*************************

Hey, Westheim, if both the US and Germany get the boot next week, you wanna split a cab to the airport? We can talk about the Mets to take our mind off of this.

***************************

As for the tournament in general, of the 20 games played so far, half of them have been scoreless at halftime. Action, action, we got action!!

This was "only" the fifth match to end nil-nil, though. So you've got a 75% chance of seeing a goal. What more do you want for your 2 hours' time, I ask?
