With a nice supply of funds in the war chest, the GM of Waffletown continued his spending spree as he tries to upgrade the squad for the second half of the season. While sipping on his morning coffee, he spotted a nice offering on the waiver wire. Joining the squad:
2B - Joe Gordon (100) - 1942 George Grantham will be sent to the reserves to make room. Joe Sewell will shift to backup the infield positions. Management hopes Gordon will provide a solid boost to the offense, and will no doubt provide a rock solid defense up the middle when combined with current shortstop Buck Herzog. https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/4d6bb7cb |

Barring an unexpected windfall, the mid-season spending spree of the Waffletown GM came to an end late in the evening of June 26th. With a handful of players on his watch-list (only one of which was actually affordable), the GM of Waffletown took one last glance at the waiver wire for any potential offers he couldn't refuse. As luck would have it, a player popped up immediately, and it took all of 3 seconds for the deal to be made. Joining the squad:
SP - Tommy Bond (99) - 1879 In another unusual move, rather than send down a pitcher, the GM decided to send Mel Ott to the reserves and bolster the pitching staff with an extra arm. (Waffletown 26 man roster average year down to 1905) https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/c0089818 |

did a little cosmetic surgery on Tommy Bond's facegen... hard to get those super old timey players, so basically looked for a generic pic of a guy with a full mustache and used that as the model.... not a bad resemblance:

While there was a celebration at the end of the regular season for another trip to the post season, the atmosphere in the Syrups clubhouse was more subdued than expected, as the club stumbled in the final stretch and had to settle for the wild card spot.
"All we had to do was take care of business to claim the division, and we didn't do it. That's on us." said starting pitcher Tommy Bond. The team offense set a number of single season records, with new marks in average (.281), runs (879), at bats (5682), hits (1597), doubles (403), walks (568), on base pct (.349), slugging (.458) and OPS (.807). Of course, that was expected as management made some radical modifications to the park in the pre-season to ramp up the offense. They will reassess the stadium dimensions in the off-season and make more changes before the next season. Waffletown will host the Left Coast LabRats in the wild card game. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with Left Coast taking the series 4 games to 3. |

Waffletown pulls out a win in a slugfest with Left Coast; as Joe Gordon drives in Yogi Berra with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to claim the 9-8 victory.
Waffletown will travel to New York to face off against their division nemesis the Hellspawn (who won 14 of 19 in the regular season series). "Got our work cut out for us." said wild card hero Larry Doyle (4-5, 2 runs scored, 2 rbis). "But anything can happen in the playoffs." |

In a 'what could have been' series, Waffletown could have potentially swept the LDS, but instead gave up late scores in game 2 and 3 to blow both of those and rolled over in an old fashioned whippin' in game 4 to bow out of the playoffs.
(note to pitching staff... stop pitching to Billy freakin' Williams, who homered in every game) |

An experimental season came to an end with a mediocre finish as Waffletown closed out 2033 with a record of 84-78, only good enough for 3rd place in the division and 7 games back of a wild card spot. Management had made some pre-season changes to the Spile, making it more challenging on hitters, in the hopes their pitching staff and defense could shine; but the team struggled to find a good groove all year. They also struggled against their division rivals, which always spells doom for any team hoping to reach the post season.
"Gotta take care of business in your own division, and we didn't do that." said reliever Tony Mullane, who made five starts in right field to go along with his pitching duties (batted .278 for the year ). Within the division, the Syrups went 31-45, so the fact they finished over .500 is actually a positive note on an otherwise forgettable year.

(could have sworn I posted an update this morning....
)An up-n-down season for Waffletown ended with a sigh of resignation as they Syrups finished 2 games back of the final wild card spot; leaving management, players and fans alike to dream of what might have been. "Three lousy wins..." said catcher Yogi Berra. "Just needed three more wins and we woulda made it in." end of year hardware: -Harry Hooper takes home his second Platinum Stick award in RF -Tommy Bond nabs his first Great Glove award at P |

The sound of champagne corks popping filled the Waffletown clubhouse as the team celebrated their first trip to the playoffs since the 2032 season. The Syrups finished with a solid 92-70 record (most wins since 2027), which put them in a tie with the K-Town Rock Piles in the wild card.
"You don't realize how special this is until you don't get there for a few years." said catcher Yogi Berra. "Gonna enjoy every moment of it." Waffletown will head to K-Town for the wild card game. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with K-Town taking the series 5 games to 2. |

A boisterous base of Syrups fans made the trip to K-Town to root on their boys in the wild card match, and they were treated to a wild ride as the two teams combined for 15 runs scored in the 6th inning or later. When it was all over, Waffletown emerged victorious 10-7 to move on to the LDS to play to seeded Norwood.

Fans knew their boys were in for a hard fought battle facing off with the top seed in the league, and they weren't disappointed in the effort as the LDS went the full 5 games. In the end, Norwood was too much for Waffletown and the Syrups title hopes end with a 4-1 loss in game 5.
Despite the loss, Waffletown's Harry Hooper took home the MVP award for his 4 home runs, 7 RBIs and .400 average during the series. "I'd rather still be playing." said Hooper after being told of his award. |

A dismal season came to a merciful end as Waffletown emerged victorious in game 162 to end the season on a small high note. 2036 ended up as a historic season for the Syrups, but not in a way anyone wants to be remembered; as the club set a new mark for most losses in a single season in the history of the franchise (56-106).
"Let's just not speak of this again." said starter Tommy Bond, who set a new team mark as well for most losses with a record of 7-23. Management hopes the team can regroup at the Silver tier next season. |

While sipping on his first cup of coffee, the GM of Waffletown browsed through the latest offerings on the waiver wire. He spotted an old timey player who would be a nice fit for the squad; and after a brief moment to consider the price, made the move to obtain him. Joining the team:
2B - Bid McPhee (1892) - 94 Joe Sewell will be sent to the reserves to make room on the roster. Joe Gordon will shift to third base and McPhee will take up residence at second; giving the Syrups a rock-solid infield on defense will McPhee (107), Buck Herzog at short (104); and Joe Gordon at third (should train up to 102 when complete). https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/bid-mcphee/ |

The scouting department stumbled across two new (yet old timey) players to add to the Waffletown lineup. First up:
Ed Delahanty (1902) - 94 Chuck Klein will be sent to the reserves to make room, and Delahanty will step into the designated hitter role. https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/ed-delahanty/ |

1B - Cap Anson (1888) - 99 Heinie Groh will be sent to the reserves to make room. Larry Doyle will shift to backup the infield positions with Deacon White, and Anson will join the starting lineup at first base. After enduring their worst season in team history, Waffletown enjoyed a return to form in 2037 with a solid 90-72 regular season. While they came up 2 game short of the division title, it was still good enough to secure the top wild card spot.
"You don't realize how special this is until you don't make it for a season or two." said a champagne soaked Tommy Bond. After setting a team record for futility on the mound last year (7-23), Bond had a complete turnaround with a solid 20-7 record this year. Waffletown will host division rival the Springfield Thunderbirds in the wild card match. The two teams met 19 times during the regular season, with Waffetown taking the series 13-6. |

and it's the dreaded one-and-done, as the bullpen completely implodes and gives up 6 runs in the last three innings to give away the game.

A see-saw season ended on a high note as Waffletown swept the final three games to go undefeated in October
Unfortunately for the team, those wins only managed to pull them to a dismal record of 77-85.Yogi Berra set a new team records for hitting streak with 20, and RBI streak with 8; and Cap Anson set a new team record for walks in a season with 102. Management will be watching the waiver wire for any potential deals, but knows quality upgrades that fit the old time theme will not only be hard to come by, but also pricey should the right ones actually appear. |

With the club in the midst of a tight race for the division title, the GM of Waffletown has kept a constant vigil looking over the waiver wire for any potential upgrades to help boost the team down the final stretch. As luck would have it, he spotted such a deal late in the evening and after briefly considering the cost, pulled the trigger. Joining the squad:
SP - Matt Kilroy (98) - 1887 Cy Young will be sent to the reserves to make room. (average year for 26 man roster down to 1900) https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/matt-kilroy/ Last edited by stl jason; 08-08-2020 at 12:25 AM. |
