Game #73 – Chicago (N) (R. Hill 6-5, 3.74 ERA) at Kansas City (O. Perez 6-5, 5.97 ERA)

Kansas City 5 (12)
W: J. Peralta (3-1) L: M. Wuertz (3-4)
HR – CHN: M. Barrett (17) KC: C. Clapinski (2), M. Teahen (15)

A series win against the best team in the National League. I guess that just shows how weak the NL is, right NL fans? It was scoreless from the 6th inning until the end, when Chris Clapinski of all people hit a walkoff shot. Mark Teahen went 3-6 with a home run, 2 runs scored, and an RBI.

TRADE

The Pirates traded 28-year-old reliever John Grabow and $832,500 to the Devil Rays for 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Chris Seddon. Pretty much a wash except for the money the Devil Rays got.

Game #74 – Milwaukee (B. Sheets 8-4, 3.04 ERA) at Kansas City (J. Bale 3-6, 5.68 ERA)
Milwaukee 9
Kansas City 5
W: B. Sheets (9-4) L: J. Bale (3-7) S: F. Cordero (11)

Nothing too special to report here. Just gave up too many runs—when you’re down 3-0 before you even bat it can be tough to come back. Endy Chavez for the Brewers went 2-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.

TRADE
The Cleveland Indians sent 23-year-old third baseman Andy Marte to the Texas Rangers for 24-year-old minor league first baseman John Mayberry Jr. and 22-year-old minor league starting pitcher Larry Lowe. This seems to be a tossup. Both Marte and Mayberry have good potential. Marte is starting to realize a little earlier, though.

Game #75 – Milwaukee (J. Suppan 3-7, 3.24 ERA) at Kansas City (M. Rogers 0-0, 1.59 ERA)
Milwaukee 6
Kansas City 1
W: J. Suppan (4-7) L: M. Rogers (0-1) S: D. Marte (3)
HR – MIL: C. Hart (8), P. Fielder (9)

Again, nothing too special. We just could never really get anything going. Rogers had an average outing, going 7 innings and giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks and struck out 2. It’s going to take him some time, but I think he’s going to be a good one. Brewers third baseman went 2-5 with a home run, a run scored, and 4 RBIs.

New York (N) 5
Boston 14
W: D. Hansack (1-2) L: J. Maine (4-7)
HR – BOS: M. Ramirez (17), J. Lugo (7)

Manny Ramirez went 5-6 in Boston’s 14-5 win. He singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run single in the 5th, hit a three-run home run in the 6th and flied out in the 8th.

WEEKLY REVIEW
A 2-4 week, with our only 2 wins coming against the Cubs, which makes things a little better. Our pitching stats are still terrible, last in the league in pretty much every category. Rogers has looked ok in his first 2 starts, and I’m excited for his future. Meanwhile, Alex Gordon could find himself in the majors shortly. I’m going to wait at least another week and see if he continues his improvement in Omaha.

We released Wichita right fielder Dee Brown. He wasn’t going anywhere with this organization. Taking his place on the 40-man roster is Omaha second baseman Tony Pena.

Starting in the next week or so, we’re going to start signing players to extensions, though don’t expect to see any big names signed. Perez, Koskie, and Dotel have all said they want to test the market, and will be traded at the deadline. Perez and Koskie should each get us a good return of major league players and/or outstanding prospects. The month of July could be a very important one for the future of this franchise.

AL Player of the Week
SS Miguel Tejada (BAL) .417, 5 HR, 8 RBIs, 6 R

NL Player of the Week
OF Randy Winn (SF) .480, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 4 R

Game #76 – Milwaukee (C. Vargas 2-9, 4.88 ERA) at Kansas City (J. Gobble 4-5, 4.92 ERA)

Milwaukee 1
Kansas City 0
W: C. Vargas (3-9) l: J. Gobble (4-6) S: D. Marte (4)
HR – MIL: J. Estrada (3)

A good start by Gobble ruined by lack of clutch hitting. We left 13 men on base, including getting the first 2 men on in the bottom of the 9th. Gobble only had 1 mistake, giving up the solo home run to Estrada.

TRADE PROPOSAL

Jim Bowden of the Nationals offered me 31-year-old first baseman Matthew LeCroy for 33-year-old closer Octavio Dotel and 22-year-old minor league starting pitcher Craig Whitaker. I turned it down. I don’t need another bad first baseman, and although I will be getting rid of Dotel, I want to keep Whitaker and let him develop for a while.

It was really a tale of two games. We were down 6-1 after 4. We tried coming back in the last three innings, scoring 1 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th, and 2 in the 9th, but we came up short. Ross Gload went 2-4 with a home run, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.

Game #78 – Kansas City (Z. Greinke 3-11, 6.68 ERA) at Pittsburgh (I. Snell 4-7, 3.07 ERA)

Kansas City 11
Pittsburgh 8
W: Z. Greinke (4-11) L: I. Snell (4-8) S: J. Soria (4)
HR – KC: D. Ross (12) PIT: J. Peralta (6), J. Bay (16)

Good thing we hit this game, because Greinke looked bad again. Snell actually looked better in his 4 innings than Greinke did in his 7. The score could have been a lot higher on both sides, as Pittsburgh left 18 men on base, and we left 26. Emil Brown left 7 on base himself. David Ross went 1-3 with a grand slam, 2 runs scored, 5 RBIs, and 2 walks.

Game #80 – Kansas City (J. Gobble 4-6, 4.63 ERA) at Cincinnati (B. Arroyo 7-5, 4.27 ERA)

Kansas City 3
Cincinnati 10
W: B. Arroyo (8-5) L: J. Gobble (4-7)
HR – CIN: R. Sanders (7), A. Dunn (14), E. Encarnacion (12)

Gobble only lasted 2.1 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits. Evert pitched a decent 2.1 innings, only giving up 1 run. However, Wellemeyer pretty much put this game out of reach by giving up 4 runs in his inning pitched. Reds first baseman Scott Hatteberg went 3-4 with 2 doubles, a triple, 1 run scored, and 3 RBIs. To make matters worse, Joey Gathright fractured his hand while sliding into a base in the 9th, so I will have to call up Jorge Padilla to be the third center fielder to start for us this season.

Game #81 – Kansas City (M. Rogers 0-1, 2.13 ERA) at Cincinnati (S. Kim 2-6, 6.72 ERA)

Kansas City 6
Cincinnati 0
W: M. Rogers (1-1) L: S. Kim (2-7)

What a game. Ross and Rogers were the only two without a hit, but Rogers did more than enough on the mound. He went the distance, allowing 6 hits and 1 walk and struck out 4. His first three starts this season have made me very excited about his future. I just hope he can keep developing into the future ace of this staff.

MONTHLY/WEEKLY THOUGHTS
Not a bad month, almost .500 at 13-14. As you can see, our pitching staff is still terrible. This month will bring many changes to the franchise, and will probably be the most important time of my young career here, even more important than the draft. Odalis Perez, Octavio Dotel, and Corey Koskie will most likely not be here after the trade deadline, and should bring some important pieces to our future. Stay tuned, it’s about to get interesting.

We released reliever Joe Nelson. While he might have been called up after our moves this month, he wasn’t exactly a prospect and was just coming off the DL after being out the beginning of the year. I felt there were other players we should be looking at in the minors. Omaha closer Andrew Brown took his place on the 40-man. We didn’t make any other transactions, although Alex Gordon keeps inching closer to being called up.

AL Player of the Week
OF Manny Ramirez (BOS) .478, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 10 R

NL Player of the Week
1B Ryan Garko (ARI) .458, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 8 R

On another note, does anyone know how to add an All-Star game to the schedule? This set had it scheduled for July 1st, and I deleted it without first figuring out how to add it on a different date. Oops.

Wow. Another good pitching performance. Perez keeps improving his trade value. I really wish we could resign him, but he’s stuck on testing the free agent market. I feel he could be an ace for awhile since he’s only 29 years old. Mark Teahen went 2-4 with a home run, 2 runs scored, 3 RBIs, and a walk.

Game #83 – Chicago (A) (D. Bush 9-5, 3.56 ERA) at Kansas City (Z. Greinke 4-11, 6.84 ERA)

We had a two-run lead going into the 9th. We brought in Soria to close, and, well, he couldn’t have done a worse job. The first batter he faced was Jermaine Dye. He got in a 3-1 hole and then served up a solo shot to cut the lead to one. The next batter was Jim Thome. Soria got ahead with a 1-2 count, then threw a ball, and Thome fouled off the next 3 pitches before taking one out to right field to tie the game. Neither team really got anything going until Jacobsen hit the first pitch of the top of the 12th out to left center for the lead and eventual win.

The home run by Thome was his 500th career homer.
