Richmond signed RP Barry Martineau (34-L), formerly of Syracuse, to a 1 year contract for $176,000. In 2001, He was 5-9 with 3 SV and a 2.61 ERA in 62 IP. In 2002, he became the Sycamore's closer when they put Ron Hutchins in the rotation. He has not had a season ERA over 2.00 since, winning the Fireman Trophy in 2002 and 2003 and making the All-Star team twice (2002,05). Last year, he was 5-4 with an MLB leading 42 SV and a 1.89 ERA in 76.1 IP. |

Hartford signed C Lee Dean (33-L), formerly of Syracuse, to a 1 year contract for $164,000. He hit .235/.341/.389 in 468 AB with 14 HR and 57 RBI last year. He is a 2-time Silver Slugger (2001-02) and a 3-time All-Star (2002-03,05). He was also the Millennial Cup MVP in 2001 and 2003. There are two big name free agents still unsigned: RP Steve Dockery (29-R), Louisville's former closer, and C Dick Pavlov (38-L), Louisville's former catcher. We offered Dockery a contract, but the bidding quickly exceeded our budget. And we finished our Grapefruit League schedule with a 4 to 3 win at Memphis' training complex. We finished 17-13, good for only 4th place in the South. Richmond went 21-8 to top all teams and Buffalo led the North at 18-11. Louisville had the worst record at 8-21. The Colonels look to have a pretty good offense on paper, but the pitching looks woeful. Rookie Ricky Lucero (26-R) led all players with a .431 BA. Leo Toruno (32-L) of Charlotte and our own Jack Washburn (24-L) led with 6 HR. Tom Howard (29-R) of Providence led with 17 RBI. Our own Ray McDonald (25-L), who led the MLB with 117 RBI last season, had 1 RBI all Spring.... We got through the schedule relatively unscathed, except that SS Brian Bowden (29-R) has a sprained knee and Trudy the Trainer is not certain when he will be able to play, but hopes it will be any day now. Next up: Meet the Jays! |

Opening Day starters are highlighted in blue. Opening Day Roster Pitchers Starting Rotation Jim Baucom 24 year old left-hander from Indianapolis, Indiana. 6' 8" 198 lbs. (-4) He just keeps getting skinnier and skinnier.... $140,000. Signed through 2015. The first pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. A big, tall string bean who can hit 100 MPH in the radar gun with his over the top fastball. He also throws a good slider, a very good splitter and a crappy changeup. A decent fielder for a pitcher and one of the best moves to 1st I have ever seen. He is an average hitter for a pitcher with a career .194 BA. He is an excellent bunter. He is very smart on and off the field. He is a 4-time All-Star and swept all the pitching awards in 2004, when he won the Triple Crown. He started last season 6-0 in 8 starts, but tore his labrum on May 10 and missed the rest of the season. Was 0-0 with a 4.12 ERA this Spring. 19.2 IP, 24 H, 1 HR, 0 BB, 21 SO. He looked very good, except for one bad outing. 2005 (MLB): 6-0 1.74 ERA 62 IP, 47 H, 4 HR, 8 BB, 60 SO, 1.2/8.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): 27-3 1.71 ERA 274 IP 181 H. 11 HR, 40 BB, 266 SO, 1.3/8.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): 14-11 2.13 ERA 258.1 IP, 205 H, 9 HR, 51 BB, 216 SO, 1.8/7.5 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville MLB (4 yrs): 58-28 2.22 ERA 842.1 IP, 663 H, 41 HR, 169 BB, 716 SO, 1.8/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville Al Calice 25 year old right-hander from Chicago, Illinois. 6' 3" 199 lbs. (+5) $5,500. Arbitration eligible after this season. Our 1st pick (4th overall) in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. 98 MPH over the top fastball with a solid curve and pedestrian slider that SD Brian Yoder says will get better. Not a very good fielder and only has a mediocre move to 1st. A horrible hitter, striking out in over half of his at bats in his career, but he is a good bunter. Was the August Pitcher of the Month. Was 1-0 with a 1.47 ERA this Spring. 18.1 IP, 20 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 15 SO. 2005 (MLB): 20-8 3.20 ERA 233.1 IP, 213 H, 15 HR, 67 BB, 163 SO, 2.6/6.3 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): 8-9 3.58 ERA 183.2 IP, 179 H, 12 HR, 83 BB, 95 SO, 4.1/4.7 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): 1-0 2.25 ERA 4 G, 1 GS, 16 IP, 17 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 8 SO, 3.4/4.5 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003 (AAA): 7-7 3.47 ERA 1 SV, 27 G, 20 GS, 137.1 IP, 133 H, 4 HR, 59 BB, 88 SO, 3.9/5.8 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona MLB (3 yrs): 29-17 3.33 ERA 433 IP, 409 H, 28 HR, 156 BB, 266 SO, 3.2/5.5 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville Tommy Corris 25 year old right-hander (26 on April 23) from New York City. 6' 1" 189 lbs. $110,000. Signed through 2012. Acquired in a trade with Louisville in October. 97 MPH over the top fastball with a good splitter, a mediocre changeup and a subpar curve. A poor fielder, but a very good move to first for a right-hander. A good hitter for a pitcher with a .214 career BA. He is not so great a bunter, though. Very smart and able to make adjustments on the fly. Made the All-Star team each of the past two seasons. Was 4th in the MLB in fewest BB/9 last year with 1.48. Went 2-2 with a 5.49 ERA this Spring. 19.2 IP, 22 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 19 SO. 2005 (MLB): 13-14 3.20 ERA 255.2 IP, 252 H, 16 HR, 42 BB, 139 SO, 1.5/4.9 BB/SO per 9 for Louisville 2004 (MLB): 17-11 2.97 ERA 245.2 IP, 241 H, 16 HR, 51 BB, 151 SO, 1.9/5.5 BB/SO per 9 for Louisville 2003 (MLB): 13-12 2.94 ERA 251 IP, 218 H, 14 HR, 64 BB, 134 SO, 2.3/4.8 BB/SO per 9 for Louisville MLB (4 yrs): 50-43 3.04 ERA 928.1 IP, 882 H, 60 HR, 194 BB, 521 SO, 1.9/5.1 BB/SO per 9 for Louisville Del Warwick 31 year old left-hander from Amarillo, Texas. 5' 11" 192 lbs. (+2) $145,000. Signed through 2009. Acquired in a trade with Rochester in December 2002 for Rookie of the Year RF Glen Lewis. 95 MPH over the top fastball with a good curve and a solid changeup. He won a Gold Glove in 2002 and has a superb move to first. A good hitter for a pitcher with a .216 career BA and a superb bunter with 64 SH in five seasons. A very hard worker and a nice guy. He is 3rd in the MLB in career wins with 78. Allowed the 3rd most HR (25) in the MLB last year. Was 3-2 with a 3.57 ERA this Spring. 17.2 IP, 16 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 6 SO. 2005 (MLB): 15-15 3.97 ERA 231 IP, 231 H, 25 HR, 55 BB, 134 SO, 2.1/5.2 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): 14-9 2.79 ERA 235.1 IP, 216 H, 15 HR, 48 BB, 149 SO, 1.8/5.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): 14-12 2.60 ERA 242 IP, 229 H, 18 HR, 62 BB, 139 SO, 2.3/5.2 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville MLB (5 yrs): 78-57 3.15 ERA 1200.2 IP, 1111 H, 96 HR, 341 BB, 735 SO, 2.6/5.5 BB/SO per 9 for Rochester (2) and Jacksonville (3) Tommy Keyser. 26 year old left-hander from Crossville, Tennessee (a very small town not quite halfway to Nashville from Knoxville). 6' 6" 204 lbs. (no change) $5,250. Renewable contract. Our 5th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. 94 MPH fastball with an excellent slider and a mediocre changeup. Pitches up in the zone and gets a lot of fly balls. A very good fielder for a pitcher and a solid move to 1st for a left-hander. Has hit .176 in his career, so far. He is a decent bunter. A stand up fellow and good under pressure. Was the Pitcher of the Year in the Southern League in 2002, leading in Wins and ERA. Was the July Rookie of the Month last year. Was 0-3 with a 3.15 ERA this Spring. 20 IP, 23 H, 3 HR, 4 BB, 12 SO. 2005 (MLB): 11-5 2.94 ERA 144 IP, 126 H, 11 HR, 40 BB, 91 SO, 2.5/5.7 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2005 (AAA): 1-1 5.25 ERA 12 IP, 14 H, 2 HR, 4 BB, 15 SO, 3.0/11.2 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona Beach 2004 (AAA): 7-9 4.05 ERA 111 IP, 120 H, 9 HR, 47 BB, 69 SO, 3.8/5.6 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona 2003 (MLB): 2-1 6.75 ERA 18.2 IP, 26 H, 3 HR, 10 BB, 11 SO, 4.8/5.3 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003 (AAA): 4-9 4.02 ERA 118.2 IP, 118 H, 8 HR, 63 BB, 68 SO, 4.8/5.2 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona MLB (2 yrs): 13-6 3.38 ERA 162.2 IP, 152 H, 14 HR, 50 BB, 102 SO, 2.8/5.6 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville Bullpen Bill Grant 35 year old left-hander from Mentor, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland. on Lake Erie). 6' 2" 191 lbs. (+1) $42,000 Signed through 2008. Acquired in a trade with Rochester in February, 2001. 96 MPH cut fastball with a very good curve. A decent fielder and a great move to 1st. 2 for 8 in his career as a hitter with 1 strikeout (to a non-pitcher) and a decent bunter. Likes to play cards in the clubhouse. Made the All-Star team in 2002 and 2003, but had his best season last year, winning the Fireman Trophy and Rolaids Relief Man Award. Was 4-1 with 5 SV and a 1.52 ERA this Spring. 29.2 IP, 15 H, 3 HR, 10 BB, 25 SO. 2005 (MLB): 6-1 1.52 ERA 40 SV, 77 IP, 64 H, 1 HR, 15 BB, 61 SO, 1.8/7.1 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): 9-0 1.95 ERA 23 SV, 78.1 IP, 72 H, 6 HR, 24 BB, 67 SO, 2.8/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): 6-9 3.20 ERA 15 SV 98.1 IP, 92 H, 7 HR, 36 BB, 85 SO, 3.3/7.8 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville MLB (5 yrs): 29-22 2.54 ERA 105 SV 457 IP, 391 H, 28 HR, 159 BB, 391 SO 3.1/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville Bob Craig 28 year old right-hander from New York City. 6' 5" 201 lbs. (+2) $5,250. Possibly arbitration eligible after this season. An original Jay. 94 MPH fastball with a good slider, mediocre curve and subpar changeup. Not a good fielder at all and a below average move to 1st. Had his first MLB at bat last year and made an out, but did not strike out and scored a run. If I recall correctly, he bunted into a force out. A great bunter, usually, though. A likeable guy. The first Top 100 (barely) prospect the Jays ever had, has now had back to back excellent seasons, when he was not languishing on the DL, which was very often. Was 3rd in the voting for the Fireman Trophy last year and led the MLB with 8 HLD. Was 1-0 with 1 SV and a 1.35 ERA this Spring. 13.1 IP, 11 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 9 SO. 2005 (MLB): 3-1 0.52 ERA 3 SV, 51.2 IP, 26 H, 0 HR, 17 BB, 35 SO, 3.0/6.1 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): 5-0 1.46 ERA 3 SV, 37 IP, 27 H, 1 HR, 19 BB, 27 SO, 4.6/6.6 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2004 (AAA): 1-1 2.01 ERA 13 SV, 22.1 IP, 15 H, 2 HR, 5 BB, 20 SO, 2.0/8.1 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona 2003 (MLB): 0-0 81.00 ERA 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 HR, 0 BB, 0 SO, 0.0/0.0 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003(AAA): 1-1 3.29 ERA 4 SV, 13.2 IP, 12 H, 2 HR, 3 BB, 10 SO, 2.0/6.6 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona MLB (5 yrs): 8-2 2.91 ERA 6 SV, 105 IP, 81 H, 7 HR, 49 BB, 76 SO, 4.2/6.5 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville Dave Bennett 31 year old right-hander from Peoria, Arizona. 6' 0" 196 lbs. $25,000. Signed though 2008. Signed as a free agent in December. 95 MPH over the top fastball that he throws with 4 seams and two. No breaking pitch. Not much of a fielder and a mediocre move to first. 0 for 8 as a batter in his career, but is a good bunter. A stand up guy and fun to be around. Is injury prone and missed all of 2001. Was 0-0 with 1 SV and a 1.15 ERA this Spring. 15.2 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 2 BB, 13 SO. 2005 (MLB): 6-3 1.84 ERA 4 SV, 63.2 IP, 43 H, 5 HR, 19 BB, 53 SO, 2.7/7.5 BB/SO per 9 for Ottawa 2004 (MLB): 4-7 5.58 ERA 0 SV, 50 IP, 64 H, 4 HR, 19 BB, 36 SO, 3.4/6.5 BB/SO per 9 for Ottawa 2003 (MLB): 0-2 2.98 ERA 3 SV 63.1 IP, 61 H, 6 HR, 19 BB, 54 SO, 2.7/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for Ottawa MLB (4 yrs): 19-21 3.25 ERA 11 SV, 252 IP, 244 H, 23 HR, 87 BB, 208 SO, 3.1/7.4 BB/SO per 9 for Ottawa Albert Davies 29 year old left-hander from Pleasant View, Tennessee (a very small town 20 miles northwest of Nashville). 6' 7" 201 lbs. (-1) $5,500. Arbitration eligible after this season. Was our 6th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. 94 MPH cut fastball with a good splitter. His fielding used to be decent, but has slipped. Has a superb move to 1st. 0 for 3 as a batter in his career, but has not struck out. Decent bunter. Considered a team leader. Made the All-Star team as a rookie in 2004, but was bitten by the potato bug last year, especially in the 2nd half. Led the Southern League in SV in 2002. Was 0-0 and did not allow a run this Spring. 14 IP, 6 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 11 SO. 2005 (MLB): 7-3 3.35 ERA 2 SV, 80.2 IP, 78 H, 11 HR, 20 BB, 65 SO, 2.2/7.3 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): 8-6 2.37 ERA 5 SV, 91 IP, 79 H, 6 HR, 31 BB, 68 SO, 3.1/6.7 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): 0-0 4.63 ERA 11.2 IP, 21 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 9 SO, 4.6/6.9 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Jacksonville 2003 (AAA): 0-4 3.47 ERA 1 SV, 36.1 IP, 28 H, 3 HR, 10 BB, 40 SO, 2.5/9.9 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona MLB (3 yrs): 15-9 2.95 ERA 7 SV, 183.1 IP, 178 H, 18 HR, 57 BB, 142 SO, 2.8/7 0 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville Robbie Hopley 32 year old right-hander from Nassau, the Bahamas. 6' 6" 200 lbs. (no change) $10,000. Free agent after this season. Acquired in a trade with Syracuse in April, 2002. 97 MPH cut fastball and a mediocre curve. An excellent fielder, but is very slow to home and does not have a good move to first. His move is not even good enough to be called bad. 1 for 3 in his career as a hitter without a strikeout and a very good bunter. A quiet, unassuming fellow, who is a hard worker, but has a reputation for being cost conscious. He has become one of the leaders on the team. Did not allow a home run in the MLB in his first 3 seasons, but has given up 10 in the last 2 years. He missed the first two months of the season with an injury last year and we are hoping he is back to full strength this season, but he did not look very good this Spring. He was 0-0 with a 7.50 ERA. 12 IP, 14 H, 1 HR, 4 BB, 8 SO. 2005 (MLB): 3-3 2.09 ERA 2 SV, 43 IP, 29 H, 3 HR, 11 BB, 17 SO, 2.3/3.6 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): 1-2 2.50 ERA 10 SV, 68.1 IP, 57 H, 7 HR, 27 BB, 45 SO, 3.6/5.9 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): 2-3 3.17 ERA 4 SV, 59.2 IP, 54 H, 0 HR, 31 BB, 45 SO, 4.7/6.8 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville MLB (5 yrs): 13-10 2.71 ERA 16 SV, 248.2 IP, 195 H, 10 HR, 116 BB, 171 SO, 4.2/6.2 per 9 for Syracuse (1) and Jacksonville (4) Fielders Catchers Bob Hutson 23 year old catcher who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Smyrna, Georgia (a suburb of Atlanta). 6' 0" 187 lbs. (+1) $5,000. Renewable contract. Our 1st round pick (15th overall) in the 2005 B Leagues Draft. A solid receiver with an average arm. Threw out 39% of base stealers in his rookie season. A very slow runner and no threat to steal (but he can outrun my pet 3-legged box turtle). Was the Rookie of the Year last year and was the MVP of the Texas League in 2005 and won a Bronze Glove, his 2nd in a row. A good guy, but not easy to cozy up to. Hit .300/.373/.417 with 4 2B and 1 HR and 12 RBI (tying for the team lead) in 60 AB this Spring with 0 SB. 2005 (MLB): .259/.346/.386 in 386 AB with 9 HR and 53 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (B): .312/.415/.543 in 352 AB with 19 HR and 82 RBI and 2 SB for San Antonio of the Texas League 2003 (B): .244/.336/.396 in 283 AB with 9 HR and 47 RBI and 1 SB for San Antonio of the Texas League Don Kern 29 year old catcher who bats and throws right-handed from Los Altos, California (a very small city 15 miles northwest of San Jose). 6' 0" 195 lbs. (no change) $5,500. Arbitration eligible after this season. Our 4th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. A good receiver with a solid arm. Threw out 43% of base stealers in his rookie season and upped that to 50% in his 2nd season, but dropped to 39% last year . He needs to up it this year, because he cannot hit and all of his value is in his glove. A decent runner for a catcher. He stole 11 bases in his rookie season, but none in the last two years. Has yet to break the .200 ceiling, and we are no longer hopeful, but there is no one to take his place. A very hard worker and a great guy. Won a Bronze Glove in the Southern League in 2001. Hit .262/.404/.262 with 0 HR and 8 RBI in 32 AB this Spring with 0 SB and 10 BB. 2005 (MLB): .169/.280/.309 in 136 AB with 4 HR and 15 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): .161/.248/.214 in 112 AB with 1 HR and 10 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (AAA): .255/.352/.383 in 47 AB with 1 HR and 5 RBI and 0 SB for Daytona 2003 (MLB): .199/.279/.327 in 251 AB with 8 HR and 33 RBI and 11 SB as a rookie for Jacksonville 2003 (AAA): .267/.371/.300 in 60 AB with 0 HR and 6 RBI and 5 SB for Daytona MLB (3 yrs): .182/.272/.297 in 499 AB with 13 HR and 58 RBI and 11 SB for Jacksonville Infielders Jack Washburn 24 year old first baseman who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Edgemoor, Delaware (a suburb of Wilmington). 6' 1" 186 lbs. (+6) $75,000. Arbitration eligible. Our 2nd round pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. He has very good range for a first baseman, but has been very error prone. He made 12 in 108 starts last year (.989). Was a 2nd baseman in the B Leagues. A very fast runner, who likes to steal bases and is very good at it. 77% career success rate. He is a leader in the clubhouse. He led the Southern League in HR, RBI and SLG and was 2nd in OPS as a 19 year old. I predicted last year that he would have a breakout season and he did. Though his home runs did not improve, every other aspect of his game was better. His BB to SO went from 46-104 to 64-67 in almost the same number of at bats. Missed a month with a fractured thumb. Hit .283/.403/.617 in 60 AB with an MLB leading 6 HR and 11 RBI this Spring with 6 SB. 2005 (MLB): .263/.370/.459 in 407 AB with 13 HR and 46 RBI and 26 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): .234/.312/.421 in 423 AB with 16 HR and 55 RBI and 21 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): .241/.287/.417 in 456 AB with 12 HR and 47 RBI and 32 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (AAA): .333/.340/.604 in 48 AB with 3 HR and 10 RBI and 7 SB for Daytona MLB (4 yrs): .248/.320/.438 in 1476 AB with 48 HR and 177 RBI and 88 SB for Jacksonville. Charlie Faber 35 year old 2nd baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Pompano Beach, Florida (in Pam Beach County, 10 miles north of Fort Lauderdale). 6' 3" 200 lbs. (-1) $50,000. Signed through 2007. Acquired in a trade with Richmond in March, 2002. A solid defender with exceptional hands and a good arm. Does not have the range he used to, though he can still cover just enough ground to be effective. Can play anywhere on the infield. Below average runner now, but will steal a base now and then. The greatest leadoff hitter ever! Hit .280/.333/.360 with 0 HR and 9 RBI in 50 AB this Spring with 0 SB. 2005 (MLB): .243/.347/.262 in 202 AB with 0 HR and 9 RBI and 3 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): .290/.366/.355 in 420 AB with 0 HR and 41 RBI and 9 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): .200/.281/.260 in 200 AB with 0 HR and 12 RBI and 6 SB for Jacksonville MLB (5 yrs): .248/.328/.305 in 1392 AB with 1 HR and 114 RBI and 2 SB for Richmond (1) and Jacksonville (4) T.R. Can play anywhere on the infield and represented the Northern Division in the All-Star Game as a shortstop three times, 2002-04. Below average runner, but will steal a base now and then. He is not too bright and can be a little reluctant to change. Does not like to let a pitch go by without swinging and just loves to ground into double plays. His contract kept us from being able to trade him this off season. We will not re-sign him this Winter. Arbitration eligible. Acquired in a trade with Providence in December. Superior fielder in all respects, except only average range. Can play anywhere on the infield. He can run and steal bases. A simple man who enjoys simple pleasures is what our media guide has to say about him. He is laid back, but is no slacker. Can play 1st well and the corner outfield spots, if pressed. Average runner, but likes to steal bases and is very good at it. Stole 22 bases in 2003 without being caught, then went 11-7 in 2004 and stole 21 last year without being caught! Once went 5 for 5 with a double and a home run and 5 RBI against the Jays. A very hard worker. Won a Gold Glove at short in 2002 and another at 2nd in 2004. A very hard worker and a team spark plug. Not much of a hitter, bit slaps enough singles to contribute something to the offense. Hit .458/.480/.583 with 0 HR and 3 RBI in 24 AB this Spring with 1 SB, but sprained his knee and is not ready to play yet. Trudy says it could be any day, so we are not putting him on the DL. (-3) $50,000. Signed through 2007. Acquired in a trade with Providence just before Opening Day, 2002. A very good fielder, but not the elite defender that he was. He has lost a little range, but still has great hands and one of the strongest arms for a shortstop in the League. Fast runner and likes to steal bases and is very good at it. 74% career success rate. A very hard worker and the Captain in the clubhouse. Always seems to be a better hitter than his numbers indicate. Hit .174/.255/.239 with 0 HR and 0 RBI in 46 AB this Spring with 0 SB. With all the shortstops we have right now, Daw is likely going to see most of his action as a defensive replacement at 3rd base. 2005 (MLB): .220/.306/.332 in 295 AB with 4 HR and 44 RBI and 15 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): .227/.304/.316 in 481 AB with 7 HR and 52 RBI and 23 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): .246/.306/.352 in 488 AB with 9 HR and 61 RBI and 41 SB for Jacksonville MLB (5 yrs): .227/.303/.320 in 2081 AB with 29 HR and 224 RBI and 113 SB for Providence (1) and Jacksonville (4) Buddy Hendricks 26 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Shiprock, New Mexico ( a very small town in the northwest corner of the state). 5' 9" 167 lbs. $18,800. Arbitration eligible. Acquired in a trade with Rochester in January. Another superior defender with a toothpick bat. A fast runner and is good at stealing bases. Stole 40 last season and was caught 15 times. A stand up guy, who does not like the spotlight (and with his bat, he will not get it). Hit .172/.294/.207 with 0 HR and 2 RBI in 58 AB this Spring with 6 SB.\ 2005 (MLB): .232/.299/.263 in 495 AB with 0 HR and 26 RBI and 40 SB for Rochester 2004 (MLB): .283/.336/.365 in 367 AB with 1 HR and 23 RBI and 15 SB for Rochester 2003 (MLB): .233/.298/.264 in 258 AB with 0 HR and 28 RBI and 19 SB for Rochester MLB (5 yrs): .241/.298/.282 in 1769 AB with 1 HR and 113 RBI and 111 SB for Rochester Outfielders Tommy Adams 23 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Houston, Pennsylvania (a very small town 18 miles southwest of Pittsburgh). 6' 0" 187 lbs. $5,000. Renewable contract. Our 2nd round pick in the 2004 B Leagues Draft. Decent range and a good arm. A good runner and will steal a base. None too bright, but a leader in the clubhouse. Was a big surprise last year as an unranked prospect. We'll see if he is for real this season. Hit .327/.411/.469 with 2 HR and 8 RBI in 49 AB with 1 SB this Spring. He'll bat leadoff against right-handers. 2005 (MLB): .338/.422/.410 in 195 AB with 3 HR and 24 RBI and 5 SB for Jacksonville 2005 (AAA): .326/.401/.454 in 337 AB with 5 HR and 50 RBI and 19 SB for Daytona Beach 2004 (MLB): .289/.324/.433 in 97 AB with 2 HR and 15 RBI and 3 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (AAA): .313/.374/.399 in 386 AB with 4 HR and 40 RBI and 5 SB for Daytona 2003 (B): .299/.358/.420 in 505 AB with 9 HR and 51 RBI with 30 SB for Wichita of the Texas League MLB (2 yrs): .322/.391/.418 in 292 AB with 5 HR and 39 RBI and 8 SB for Jacksonville Cal Doty 29 year old center fielder who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from New York City. 6' 1" 181 lbs. (+6) $275,000. Signed through 2011. An original Jay. That contract is all because of our emotional connection to him and he is not worth it now and will definitely not be worth it in 5 years. Good range and an average arm. But not enough range to be a good center fielder, though we still have not found anyone better in 6 years of trying. Fast runner and likes to steal, but gets caught almost as often as he makes it. A very hard worker and a great guy and probably still the most popular player on the team. Makes a lot of money giving speeches around town. Finished 3rd in BA and won the Silver Slugger Award for center field in 2004 and made the All-Star team each of the last two seasons. Hit .250/.318/.267 in 60 AB with 0 HR and 4 RBI this Spring with 3 SB. 2005 (MLB): .305/.365/.446 in 547 AB with 13 HR and 69 RBI and 20 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): .333/.391/.492 in 598 AB with 14 HR and 77 RBI and 17 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): .296/.355/.401 in 588 AB with 5 HR and 62 RBI and 38 SB for Jacksonville MLB (5 yrs): .306/.367/.431 in 2814 AB with 44 HR and 324 RBI and 126 SB for Jacksonville Ray McDonald 25 year old right fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Cimarron Hills, Colorado (surrounded by Colorado Springs). 6' 1" 190 lbs. Fast runner and likes to steal. A very hard worker and easy going. Led the MLB in doubles with 39 in 2003. Led in Total Bases (314), RBI (117) and Runs Created (119) last year and won the MVP award. He was also the Silver Slugger and made the All-Star team for the 2nd straight year. Hit .213/.294/.262 with 0 HR and 1 RBI in 61 AB this Spring with 4 SB. Almost the same numbers he put up last Spring, so we are not worried. 2005 (MLB): .325/.375/.507 in 619 AB with 21 HR and 117 RBI and 30 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): .300/.359/.509 in 527 AB with 22 HR and 99 RBI and 20 SB for Jacksonville 2003 (MLB): .304/.369/.465 in 592 AB with 12 HR and 81 RBI and 19 SB for Jacksonville MLB (5 yrs): .297/.355/.462 in 2432 AB with 66 HR and 371 RBI and 98 SB for Orlando (2) and Jacksonville (3) Dickie Stemen 31 year old right fielder who bats and throws right-handed from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin (on the Door Peninsula, 38 miles northeast of Green Bay). 6' 3" 200 lbs. Has only made 1 error in 294 outfield games at all levels over the last 5 seasons. A very hard worker and goes along with the flow. Hit .278/.328/.426 with 2 HR and 2 RBI in 54 AB this Spring with 0 SB. Will play center against lefties, at least in the early going. 2005 (MLB): .255/.300/.350 in 200 AB with 2 HR and 13 RBI and 0 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (AAA): .309/.341/.420 in 81 AB with 2 HR and 11 RBI and 2 SB for New Haven 2003 (MLB): .309/.367/.418 in 55 AB with 1 HR and 6 RBI and 3 SB for Hartford 2003 (AAA): .290/.336/.452 in 124 AB with 4 HR and 20 RBI and 2 SB for New Haven MLB (4 yrs): .268/.306/.382 in 414 AB with 7 HR and 44 RBI and 7 SB for Hartford (3) and Jacksonville (1) Fernando Tello 24 year old right fielder who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Columbus, Ohio. 6' 1" 201 lbs. (+2) $5,250. Possibly arbitration eligible after this season. Our 1st round pick (9th overall) in the 2004 B Leagues Draft. Subpar range and a very strong arm. Can also play 1st and 3rd base, but makes a ton of errors on the infield. Slow runner. A very hard worker, but not one to make a lot of friends. Was 2nd in the MVP voting and won the Batting Title and a Bronze Bat in the Southern League in 2003. We still expect him to be a great hitter and he will be the first in line to take over should Tommy Adams prove last year was a fluke. Hit .275/.351/.348 with 1 HR and 5 RBI in 69 AB with 1 SB this Spring. 2005 (MLB): .269/.310/.402 in 438 AB with 10 HR and 73 RBI and 2 SB for Jacksonville 2004 (MLB): .278/.340/.409 in 492 AB with 12 HR and 53 RBI and 0 SB as a rookie for Jacksonville 2004 (AAA): .289/.341/.470 in 83 AB with 2 HR and 14 RBI and 0 SB for Daytona 2003 (B): .330/.395/.487 in 464 AB with 17 HR and 83 RBI with 1 SB for Asheville of the Southern League MLB (2 yrs): .274/.326/.405 in 1006 AB with 22 HR and 126 RBI and 2 SB for Jacksonville Disabled List No one! Since we created the farm systems, being a Top 200 prospect now means at least a little, so we will pay attention to them. Prospects ranked by Baseball America in the top 200: 2B Tom Hart (#14) from El Paso of the B Leagues 19 year old who bats and throws right-handed from Highgrove, California (next to Riverside). 6' 2" 181 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. The plum of our haul of players in the dissolution of the B Leagues. Superior range and an average arm, but prone to making errors because of all the acrobatic plays he tries to make. Very fast. A very hard worker and stand up fella who just wants to play baseball and not be bothered. Was not invited to Spring Training. Will play for Billings (R) this year. P Fernando Rivera (#16) from El Paso of the B Leagues 22 year old right-hander from Pedro Brand, the Dominican Republic. 6' 3" 186 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. Our 2nd plum from the dissolution of the B Leagues. 96 MPH cut fastball with a good forkball, a mediocre slider and change up that is a pitch in name only. Gets a ton of ground balls. Decent fielder with a good enough move to first. Does not look like much of a hitter and has trouble bunting. He is a stand up guy and easy going. Was not invited to Spring Training. He will start the season at Charleston (A). 2005 (B): 5-14 4.52 ERA 139.1 IP, 170 H, 8 HR, 58 BB, 42 SO, 3.7/2.7 BB/SO for El Paso of the Texas League 2004 (B): 0-5 4.34 ERA 1 SV, 87 IP, 109 H, 5 HR, 49 BB, 57 SO, 5.1/5.9 BB/SO per 9 for El Paso of the Texas League RP Mike Hollenbeck (#54) down from #8 23 year old (24 on April 30) right-hander from New York City. 6' 2" 179 lbs. (+1) Minor League contract. Rookie. Our 2nd round pick in the 2005 B Leagues Draft. 99 MPH fastball with a solid curve and change up that is a work in progress, but Brian Yoder says it will develop eventually and make him an effective starter. However, he is injury prone, so we are not counting on him and will trade him, if the opportunity ever arises. A very good fielder with about as good a move to first as a right-hander can have. 3 for 14 (.214) with 2 doubles for Daytona Beach (AAA) last year. He is not a good bunter. He is a very hard worker and leadership material. Was the Reliever of the Year in the Southern League in 2004. Went 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA this Spring. 10.1 IP, 11 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 7 SO. 2005 (MLB): 0-0 4.41 ERA 16.1 IP, 16 H, 2 HR, 8 BB, 9 SO, 4.4/5.0 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2004 (AAA): 5-6 3.56 ERA 5 SV, 68.1 IP, 67 H, 7 HR, 32 BB, 52 SO, 4.2/6.8 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona Beach 2004 (B): 2-4 1.25 ERA 12 SV, 79 IP, 49 H, 4 HR, 24 BB, 69 SO, 2.7/7.9 BB/SO per 9 for Asheville of the Southern League RF Lorenzo Amaro (#63) from El Paso of the B Leagues 20 year old who bats from both sides of the plate and throws right-handed from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. 6' 1" 169 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. One of the of players we acquired in the dissolution of the B Leagues. Projects to have a good extra base bat. Good range and arm. Fast and will steal bases. They say his mind tends to wander, but he is not a slacker. Was not invited to Spring Training. Will play for Charleston (A) this year. 2005 (B): .192/.254/.279 in 458 AB with 5 HR and 43 RBI and 11 SB for El Paso of the Texas League RP Barry Anderson (#90) from El Paso of the B Leagues 18 year old right-hander from Charlotte, North Carolina. 6' 6" 202 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. Another player we got from the dissolution of the B Leagues. 94 MPH cut fastball with a good curve and a crappy changeup. Gets a lot of ground balls. Decent fielder for a pitcher with an average move to first. Looks okay at the plate for a pitcher and is a fantastic bunter. Extremely self-confident and not the friendliest fellow, but is not a slacker. Was not invited to Spring Training. He will start the season at Billings (R). 3B Jim Dykema (#104) from El Paso of the B Leagues 20 year old (21 on April 23) who bats and throws right-handed from Tamarac, Florida (northwest of Fort Lauderdale). 6' 2" 179 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. One of the of players we acquired in the dissolution of the B Leagues. Projects to be a line drive double machine. Decent range and an average arm. Has the skills to play middle infield, but lacks the range needed to excel. Fast and will steal bases. None too bright and does not seem to get excited about much of anything, though he is not a slacker. Was not invited to Spring Training. Will play for Charleston (A) this year. 2005 (B): .188/.235/.250 in 48 AB with 0 HR and 1 RBI and 2 SB for El Paso of the Texas League P Brian Ewers (#111) from El Paso of the B Leagues 19 year old right-hander from Winter Haven, Florida. 6' 4" 184 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. Another player we got from the dissolution of the B Leagues. 91 MPH fastball with a slider the scouts are excited about and a changeup that they say will be good enough to let him start games. Stinky fielder with a decent move to first. Cannot hit a lick, but is okay bunting. Was not invited to Spring Training. He will play for Billings (R) this year. 1B Ken Kurtis (#129) from El Paso of the B Leagues 19 year old who bats and throws left-handed from Gainesville, Florida (home to the University of Florida). 6' 3" 193 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. One of the of players we acquired in the dissolution of the B Leagues. Projects to draw some walks and hit some home runs, but not much else. Not a good fielder, but is better at 1st than he is in the outfield, even though he is a good runner. Will steal a base. A hard worker. Was not invited to Spring Training. Will play for Billings (A) this year. RP Ron Thurgood (#174) new draftee 22 year old left-hander from Phoenix, Arizona. 5' 9" 151 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. Our 2nd round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. 97 MPH fastball with a good changeup, a decent forkball, a mediocre slider and a crappy curve. This little lefty has all the skills to be a solid starting pitcher, but just does not have the stamina. Decent fielder for a pitcher with a very good move to first. Looks good in batting practice, but has never had a professional at bat. A very good bunter. Was 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 2 games this Spring. 3 IP, 3 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 0 SO. He will start the season with Portland (AAA). 2005 (B): 5-4 2.39 ERA 9 SV, 52.2 IP, 42 H, 2 HR, 22 BB, 51 SO, 3.8/8.7 BB/SO per 9 for Oklahoma City of the Texas League RP Mickel Cannady (#196) down from #66. 24 year old right-hander from Santa Clara, California (just west of San Jose). 5' 11" 175 lbs. (+1) Minor League contract. Rookie. Our 4th round pick in the 2005 B Leagues Draft. 97 MPH cut fastball with a solid sinker and a stinky changeup. Not the worst fielder ever, but not so great, either. Has an average move to first for a right-hander. Looks like a great hitter in batting practice, but is 0 for 2 in the last 2 seasons, though he has not struck out. A superb bunter. A solid teammate. Was 2nd in the Texas League in Saves in 2004. The drop in his prospect ranking has more to do with the influx of talent in the MLB and not any drop in his outlook. Was 0-2 with a 4.80 ERA this Spring. 15 IP, 12 H, 1 HR, 8 BB, 9 SO. 2005 (MLB): 0-0 3.20 ERA 25.1 IP, 27 H, 2 HR, 9 BB, 15 SO, 3.2/5.3 BB/SO per 9 for Jacksonville 2005 (AAA): 3-3 4.29 ERA 1 SV, 42 IP, 43 H, 0 HR, 19 BB, 32 SO, 4.1/6.9 BB/SO per 9 for Daytona Beach 2004 (B): 9-2 2.62 ERA 30 SV, 65.1 IP, 49 H, 4 HR, 30 BB, 63 SO, 4.1/8.7 BB/SO per 9 for San Antonio of the Texas League 2003 (B): 0-1 4.26 ERA 1 SV 6.1 IP, 7 H, 1 HR, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0.0/7.1 BB/SP per 9 for San Antonio of the Texas League CF Larry Jones (#199) from El Paso of the B Leagues 20 year old (21 on April 6) who bats and throws left-handed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin 5' 10" 158 lbs. Minor League contract. Rookie. One of the of players we acquired in the dissolution of the B Leagues. One of two players named Larry Jones we acquired. Both are slackers. Projects to hit for a good average, but without much power or walks. Superior range and average arm. Very fast and steals bases, but gets caught a lot. Was not invited to Spring Training and will never play for the Jays, unless he quits being a slacker. Will play for Charleston (A) this year, until we can trade him. Prospects no longer ranked due to service time or age: C Bob Hutson (was #41) P Tommy Keyser (was #49) RF Fernando Tello (was #80) Prospects still eligible, but no longer ranked in the Top 200: LF Dave Brown (was #77) Notably, our 1st round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft, CF Bruce McKinley (21-L), is unrated.... But he is a hard worker and I am confident that he will make good over a lot of the players that are rated above him. Our group of prospects is rated 9th this year, the same as last year. Memphis, with 4 in the Top 25, ranks at the top this year. Ottawa is rated at the bottom. Top 25 prospects according to Baseball America: (Rank: Name, Position, Team (Age-Throws or Bats) (Level to begin the season) 1: Paul Heffernan, 2B, Hartford (20-R) (AA) was #1 2: Ron Cornwell, CF, Memphis (22-R) (AAA) new draftee 3: Mike Baugher, P, Rochester (21-L) (AAA) from B Leagues 4: Joe Pach, SS, Indianapolis (20-L) (A) from B Leagues 5: Abelino Rede, CF, Providence (21-R) (AA) new draftee 6: Bill Rawlins, P, Providence (20-R) (AAA) from B Leagues 7: Mike Rossini, P, Charlotte (22-R) (AAA) new draftee 8: Ed McMahon, RF, Louisville (19-S) (A+) new draftee 9: Shawn Smith, SS, Rochester (22-R) (MLB) was #5 10: Charlie Grohs, SS, Columbus (23-R) (AA) new draftee 11: Hersh Komnick, P, Memphis (20-R) (A) from B Leagues 12: Mark Hay, P, Buffalo (22-L) (MLB) new draftee 13: Mauricio Romero, 3B, Buffalo (21-R) (A) from B Leagues 14: Tom Hart, 2B, Jacksonville (19-R) (R) from B Leagues 15: Charlie Spitzer, 3B, Columbus (19-R) (A+) from B Leagues 16: Fernando Rivera, P, Jacksonville (22-R) (A) from B Leagues 17: Kerin Dulin, SS, New Orleans (20-S) (A) from B Leagues 18: Luis Sandoval, 2B, Indianapolis (19-R) (AA) from B Leagues 19: Jerry Brustad, RP, Orlando (22-L) (AAA) from B Leagues 20: Bob Daly, CF, Providence (18-L) (A) from B Leagues 21: Fred Ferraro, 3B, New Orleans (24-R) (MLB) was #15 22: Steve Schooley, CF, Syracuse (21-L) (MLB) new draftee 23: Lee O'Brien, C, Memphis (19-R) (SA) from B Leagues 24: Paul Clarizio, RP, Columbus (18-R) (A) from B Leagues 25: Larry DeBeer, P, Memphis (20-R) (AA) from B Leagues Eligible prospects, no longer in the top 25: Mike Hollenbeck, P, Jacksonville (23-R) (AAA) was #8, now #54 Jose Porchas, P, Ottawa (23-R) (MLB) was #9, now #53 Craig Kovacs, CF, Indianapolis (22-R) (A) was #11, now #27 Jimmy Allen, CF, Charlotte (21-L) (A) was #12, now #30 Doug Sievers, 2B, Richmond (23-L) (A) was #13, now #33 Marcos Villaneda, 2B, Birmingham (22-R) (MLB) was #14, now #26 Sam Kowalski, 2B, Charlotte (22-R) (MLB) was #17, now #52 Wayne Williams, RP, Indianapolis (22-R) (AAA) was #22, now #57 Prognosis: Take a 100+ game winning team and add 2 All-Star starting pitchers to it and it ought not to be worse! Jim Baucom gets counted as an addition, because he did not pitch much last year. The offense might not be as good as it was, because Brian Bowden and the other middle infielders we added do not hit as well as 2B Tony Weninger did. But the difference should not be too much. And maybe some of the youngsters will get better to make up the slack. All in all, I think we should have a pretty easy romp through the MLB this season! Baseball America is picking us to repeat, but in a squeaker with Richmond and Orlando. They pick Buffalo to edge out Rochester in the North and beat us in the Millennial Cup. Editor's Note: All Stats have been recalibrated and will have to be recalibrated every season for a while until the amateur draft becomes the predominate source of players in the MLB. I changed the target for errors once again. I took the average at each position for 1983-92 as the goal. This will mean more errors than last year, but fewer than the first couple of seasons when the target was 1969-92. Next up: Opening Day! |

Here's to 2006 and the Cup, finally!
Although longshots, I'll root for hometown heroes, outfielders Stemen and Jones out of Wisconsin. And although still young, time for Tello to rise as Adams certainly has become the better pick that draft. But I must have missed it, why the change from stats-only to turning ratings on? And why must your league stats be recalibrated every year? I'm still trying to figure out why you sim 25 years before you start and although now gone, why did you go to so much trouble with the B Leagues. I tried recreating your league to see if it would switch on the light bulb upstairs...Great read as always, love the reports!

2: The stats will need to be recalibrated every year for a while, because the players created in the amateur draft are different from those created as scouting discoveries, which is where all the players have been coming from. 3. I sim 25 years to get rid of all the players created in the initial player pool, because they are different from players created later. 4. I like playing with the B Leagues, because it keeps it simple. I only need one minor league farm team and players drafted from the B Leagues are closer to being major leaguers and thus the stats are more relevant, so it is easier to draft with stats only. There is not much extra work involved in running the draft, especially when the MLB had no free agency. With free agency, there is a lot more work in running the draft, because, I have to run it twice. Once after deleting all the major league free agents in a copy of the game and then again in the original copy of the game, making all the picks manually that occurred in the draft in the copy. I am only changing this league to be a standard type of league, because I have another project in the works that will use the B Leagues Draft and I wanted some variety. |

P.S. The Louisville Colonels are using your uniforms, for certain, and I think the Charlotte Hornets are yours, too!

Opening Day! We get to open at home for only the 2nd time ever! The first time was in 2002 and we won, 6 to 5, in 13 innings against Louisville with the immortal Mike Gaddis making the start. Barry Short picked up the win and C Garrett Bender drew a bases loaded walk with 2 outs to win the game. Of all those players mentioned, only C Garrett Bender is still under contract with the Jays, playing for Portland (AAA) this season and hopefully not for Jacksonville ever again. We open with 2 games against Memphis. We were 13-1 against the Mules last season when they finished 63-99 in 8th (last) place in the South. We won the first 13 games before they took the finale. They were 13th in scoring with 595 runs (Jacksonville was 3rd with 723). They were 13th in fewest runs allowed with 687 last year (Jacksonville was 2nd with 570). Memphis' run differential was -92, 14th in the MLB, and ours was +153, 2nd best. Every team in the MLB, other than the Jays, has made tons of changes to the rosters for this season and elaborating on them all would take up too much space. Also, Trudy has cleared SS Brian Bowden to play at the last minute! Memphis Mules (63-99 .389 41 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division last year) at Jacksonville Jays (104-58 .642 10 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division last year) MEM: Mike Marsh (24-R) (14-13 3.04 ERA 231 IP, 208 H, 15 HR, 79 BB, 145 SO last year) All-Star(2: 04-05) JAX: Jim Baucom (24-L) (6-0 1.74 ERA 62 IP, 47 H, 4 HR, 8 BB, 60 SO last year) Ace(04)/Hurler(04)/All-Star(4: 02-05) We faced Marsh once after trading him to Memphis and beat him, but only scored 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 home run and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts in 7 innings. I wish I had not traded him... Editor's Note: He is NOT 'fragile', as I suspected.... Baucom only faced the Mules once last year and beat them with a CG, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 7 strikeouts. Keith Meyer, who hit a home run off P Baucom last year, strikes out! 1-2-3! Bottom of the First Tommy Adams grounds out to 2nd. Brian Bowden, in his Jay debut, takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! He is not known for drawing walks. He steals 2nd! Cal Doty grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Bowden goes to 3rd. Ray McDonald, the reigning MVP, strikes out on 3 pitches................ Bottom of the Second Jack Washburn walks on 4 pitches. With 1 out, T.R. Hunter lines the first pitch to right for a hit and Washburn goes to 3rd! Hunter tries to steal 2nd, but is thrown out... Bob Hutson, the reigning Rookie of the Year, swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses.......... Through 6 innings, the Mules are out-hitting us, 3 to 2.... Bottom of the Seventh Jack Washburn lines the first pitch to left for a hit! With 1 out, he steals 2nd! With 2 outs, they do NOT walk Bob Hutson and he lines the first pitch to right for a hit and Washburn beats the throw home! 1 to 0, Jays! P Jim Baucom strikes out on 3 pitches. Top of the Ninth The Bullpen is ready. P Jim Baucom is at 90 pitches. 2-3-4 up for Memphis. PH Augustino Matos (30-R), who hit .344/.416/.647 in 317 AB with 21 HR and 95 RBI for Evansville (AAA) last year, in his MLB debut, swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep center! Keith Meyer swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to center! Gus Milam pops out to short and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays! Won - 1 to 0 We had 5 whole hits (all singles) and made no errors Memphis had 4 hits and made no errors Jim Baucom (W 1-0) pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 5 (all in the 1st 5 innings). 111 pitches. It is the 20th shutout of his career! That ties him for 1st place all-time in the MLB with Tom Peterson, who we will face tomorrow! Mike Marsh (L 0-1) went 7 innings, gave us 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. Sure wish I had never made that trade.... SS Brian Bowden, in his Jay debut, had 2 hits and a walk and stole 2 bases, but no runs or RBI,because Cal Doty and Ray McDonald went 0 for 8. 1B Jack Washburn had a hit and a walk, stole a base and scored the only run of the game. C Bob Hutson had a hit and a walk and knocked in the only run. I bet the Memphis manager is fielding a lot of questions about why he did not walk Hutson intentionally! Around the League: Orlando announced yesterday that they had signed RF Jimmy Ward (31-L), formerly of Indianapolis, to a 1 year contract for $123,000. He hit .278/.337/.443 in 449 AB with 13 HR and 68 RBI and 12 SB last year. |

Memphis Mules (0-1 .000 1 GB tied for 7th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (1-0 1.000 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) MEM: Tom Peterson (35-R) (18-14 3.15 ERA 271 IP, 266 H, 21 HR, 30 BB, 133 SO last year) All-Star(2: 03-04) JAX: Al Calice (25-R) (20-8 3.20 ERA 233.1 IP, 213 H, 15 HR, 67 BB, 163 SO last year) Peterson is 5-3 in 8 starts against the Jays in his career with a 2.67 ERA. 64 IP, 53 H, 4 HR, 7 BB, 22 SO. He has led the MLB in fewest BB/9 in each of the last 4 seasons. The Mules signed him as a free agent in November to a record contract that will pay him $435,000 this season, the highest salary, by far, in the MLB. Frank Bates, of Syracuse, is 2nd at $370,000 and only 2 other players (P Carlos Santiago of Buffalo and P Frank Cane of Louisville) are making $300,000 this season. Our own Cal Doty is 5th at $275,000..... Calice stepped up and became the Ace of the staff when P Jim Baucom went out last year. He had one start against Memphis last year and beat them with a CG, allowing 1 run on 8 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts. Gil Weaver pokes a hit to center. Keith Meyer flies out to center. Gus Milam draws a walk... Jeff Garrigus lines out to right! Bottom of the First Tommy Adams swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. Brian Bowden flies out to deep left. Cal Doty flies out to the warning track in left... Top of the Second Steve Steele, who had 2 hits off Jim Baucom yesterday, bloops a hit to right and goes to 2nd on a ground out. With 2 outs, P Tom Peterson lines a hit to right and Steele heads home and Ray McDonald throws the ball to the backstop for an error... 1 to 0, Mules. Drexel Foster grounds a hit up the middle and P Peterson scores... 2 to 0, Mules. In our half of the Second, Ray McDonald got his first hit of the season, but was promptly picked off at 1st.... Bottom of the Fourth Brian Bowden leads off by lining a 2-2 pitch to left center for a double and goes to 3rd on a ground out. With the infield in, Ray McDonald grounds a hit to right and Bowden scores! 2 to 1, Mules. McDonald steals 2nd! Jack Washburn grounds a double over the 1st base bag and McDonald scores! Tie Game: 2 to 2! Tom McDowell grounds the first pitch to left for a hit and Washburn heads home, but Jeff Garrigus, who has an arm that need not be tested, throws him out.... Bottom of the Sixth With 1 out, Cal Doty beats out an infield hit. He steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Steve Steele throws the ball into center field! With the infield in, Ray McDonald grounds one to the right side, but Rookie 2B Ernesto Calderon makes a diving stop to save a run and throws McDonald out... They walk Jack Washburn intentionally. Tom McDowell lines the first pitch to center for a hit and Doty scores! 3 to 2, Jays! Bottom of the Seventh New Pitcher: Jim Lucas (27-R), who was 3-2 with 1 SV and a 5.43 ERA in 56.1 IP last year, but had a 3.76 ERA and 9 SV in 2004. He pitched a scoreless inning yesterday. With 1 out, PH Fernando Tello, in his season debut, grounds a hit to right. With 2 outs, Brian Bowden takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Cal Doty lines a hit to center and Tello scores! 4 to 2, Jays! Top of the Eighth New Pitcher: All-Star Albert Davies (29-L) to face 1 batter: Keith Meyer. Meyer lines one back to the box and P Davies snares it! Call to the Bullpen: Dave Bennett (31-R), in his Jay debut. Gus Milam lines the first pitch P Bennett throws as a Jay to right center for a double.... Jeff Garrigus lines one hard to right, but right to Ray McDonald, but the ball pops out of his glove for an error.... His 2nd today... The Bullpen gets up. Steve Steele grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!! Bottom of the Eighth Jack Washburn draws a walk. With 2 outs, they make a pitching change. New pitcher: Eddie Scott (34-R), who was 0-1 as a rookie last year with 2 SV and a 2.03 ERA in 44.1 IP for Providence. The Mules claimed him off waivers in February. Bob Hutson lines a double to left and Washburn scores! 5 to 2, Jays! And I just realized that after Fernando Tello, there is no one to pinch-hit against righties on the bench.... The other 6 members of the bench corps are all glove men.... What doofus made up this roster? PH Ken Yockey (26-R), in his Jay debut, grounds out to 2nd... Won - 5 to 2 Mini-sweep! We had 11 hits and made 2 errors (both by RF Ray McDonald) Memphis had 7 hits and made 1 error Al Calice (W 1-0) went 7 innings, allowed 2 runs, 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out no one. He did not have his best stuff today, for sure. LHP Albert Davies (H 1) faced 12 batter, a 2-time MVP, and got him out. RHP Dave Bennett (H 1), in his Jay debut, got 2 outs and allowed 1 hit., LHP Bill Grant (SV 1) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout. Tom Peterson (L 0-1), in his Memphis debut, went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. Opposing pitchers are hitting .500 so far.... SS Brian Bowden hit a double, drew a walk and scored a run. CF Cal Doty had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. RF Ray McDonald had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI, but made 2 errors and was picked off at 1st. 1B Jack Washburn hit a double, drew a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. 3B Tom McDowell had 2 hits and an RBI. We are in Hartford to play a 4 game series. I hate playing these April games up north.... The Whalers started the season by beating the defending champion Otters in 2 games. We were 5-3 against them last year when they finished 67-95 in 8th (last) place in the North. We have won the season series in each of the past 4 seasons. They were 9th in scoring last year with 648 runs and last in fewest runs allowed with 785, the 3rd time they have accomplished that feat. However, it was the fewest runs ever allowed by team who allowed the most! The Jays hold the record for most runs allowed with 875 in that wonderful inaugural season of 2001! The Whalers' run differential was -137, the worst in the MLB. Jacksonville Jays (2-0 1.000 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at Hartford Whalers (2-0 .000 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Northern Division) JAX: Tommy Corris (25-R) (13-14 3.20 ERA 255.2 IP, 252 H, 16 HR, 42 BB, 139 SO last year) All-Star(2: 04-05) HART: Jimmy Thompson (29-R) (8-15 5.06 ERA 183.1 IP, 214 H, 15 HR, 86 BB, 74 SO last year) Corris, who we got in a trade with Louisville this Winter for 2B Tony Weninger, is making his Jay debut today. I voted to let P Tommy Corris try for hit #4, but he bunts the runners up. Tommy Adams grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and the runners hold... Brian Bowden grounds out to 3rd... Won - 7 to 0 We had 12 hits and made no errors Hartford had 6 hits and made no errors Tommy Corris (W 1-0), in his Jay debut, pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 2. 101 pitches. At bat, he went 3 for 3 with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Some debut! Jimmy Thompson (L 0-1) went 3.2 innings, gave us 5 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit. Opposing pitchers are now batting .429.... But the real hitters are batting .163 against us! LF Tommy Adams had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. RF Ray McDonald had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 3B Tom McDowell had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B T.R. Hunter had 2 hits with the first Jay HR of the season and had 2 RBI. The Whalers announced that RP Rob Matthews (24-R), a rookie, who made his MLB debut with a scoreless inning and left with an injury, had a blister and they think he will be fine for tomorrow. Down on the Farm: The Minor Leagues from AAA to Low A began their seasons today. The Portland Beavers (AAA) lost, 2 to 1, at home to the Tacoma Rainiers. Ernesto Noyola (26-R), gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 8 innings, but Mickel Cannady (24-R) gave up a run in the 9th for the loss. They had more fans (6,762) at their game than we had at ours. The Knoxville Smokies (AA) lost at Nashville, 5 to 2. The Daytona Beach Admirals (A+) won, 4 to 2, in 13 innings at Clearwater. They used 8 pitchers in the game with Jeff Papcun (25-R) picking up the win and Larry Murray (27-R) getting the Save. Neither are prospects. The Charleston RiverDogs won, 2 to 1, at Lexington. Fernando Rivera (22-R), the #16 prospect, got the win with 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk with 1 strikeout. Rob Mandler (23-R) got the Save. Editor's Note: All the minor leagues are using the same exact modifiers as the Major Leagues this year. When I have done that in the past, it usually means that BA are somewhat higher in the minors than the Majors, but home runs are a lot lower and very infrequent in the low minors. Two good reasons for doing this: 1) it is a lot easier not having to figure separate modifiers for each minor league and 2) If someone hits home runs in the minors, it is a legitimate display of their power and not a product of the factors helping them. The stats should be believable enough. Also, all minor league parks have all park factors set to 1, so we do not have to worry about adjusting for them and I have set age limits for each level below AA. A+ = 27; Low A = 25, SA = 23 and Rookie = 20. |

We have signed some minor league free agents to fill out our roster at AA and AAA. Namely, 3 catchers, a shortstop and a 3rd baseman. One of the catchers goes to Knoxville (AA), the rest of the players are in Portland (AAA). I only mention this because the 4 players going to Portland all have MLB experience and 2 of the catchers have a shot at putting Don Kern (29-R) out of his job as the starter against left-handers. They are Alex Martinez (31-R), who played for Charlotte last year and hit .267/.347/.328 in 262 AB with 1 HR and 17 RBI and 2 SB and Fred Hines (36-R), who played for Indianapolis last year and hit .277/.308/.348 in 112 AB with 0 HR and 12 RBI and 1 SB. Martinez, 5 years younger, is better now defensively, but both are good, though Hines does not have much of an arm. Martinez is a career .224 hitter with a .589 OPS and Hines is a career .294 hitter with a .669 OPS. Martinez has 7 carer HR in 1009 AB and Hines has never hit one in 1185 AB. Bill Weydert (28-S) is the shortstop and Nick Hatfield (36-S) is the 3rd baseman and hopefully we do not ever have to see either in Jacksonville. They each have a solid glove, but not much of a bat. Jacksonville Jays (3-0 1.000 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at Hartford Whalers (2-1 .667 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Northern Division) JAX: Del Warwick (31-L) (15-15 3.97 ERA 231 IP, 231 H, 25 HR, 55 BB, 134 SO last year) Gold Glove(02) HART: Bill Sanders (34-R) (1-0 3.22 ERA 1 SV, 44.2 IP, 45 H, 4 HR, 7 BB, 18 SO last year) Will Warwick bounce back and have a good year this year? He set his high in wins with the Jays last year, but also in losses and his ERA was over a run higher than it was in his first two seasons in Jacksonville. He also started more games than he ever had for the Jays, but pitched the fewest innings and gave up 10 more home runs than the year before. Anyways, I shouldn't complain, because it is nice to have the pitcher who is 3rd all-time in wins in the MLB as our 4th starter! Actually, he is tied for 3rd now, since Juan Ledesma has already won a game this year. He was 1-1 in 2 starts against Hartford last year with a 3.55 ERA. 12.2 IP, 13 H, 0 HR, 5 BB, 7 SO. This will be the 5th career start for Sanders in the MLB. The last was in 2003. We have never faced him as a starter. Tommy Adams swings at the first pitch and clears the bases with a triple off the wall in right center!! 7 to 4, Jays. But he is hurt..... Pinch-runner: Dickie Stemen (31-R), in his season debut. Won - 8 to 4 We had 11 hits and made 1 error Hartford had 11 hits (5 infield hits) and made 2 errors Del Warwick (W 1-0) went 7 innings, allowed 4 runs, 10 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out 1. Not very pretty... LHP Albert Davies went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1. Trudy's report on Tommy Adams is a torn meniscus and he will be out at least until the All-Star Game.... Now we have no leadoff hitter.... Down on the Farm: Danny Coreano (27-L) pitched a 4 hit shutout at home for Portland (AAA) over Tacoma in his season debut. He walked 1 and struck out 8. At bat, he was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. The Beavers won, 2 to 0. Last edited by Questdog; 02-27-2021 at 03:11 PM. |

Tommy Adams (23-L) was placed on the 60 day DL and 2B Charlie Faber (35-R), the greatest leadoff hitter ever, was waived and designated for assignment because he refused to be assigned to Portland (AAA). With Fernando Tello going into the lineup, we need another bat on the bench to pinch-hit against right-handers and Charlie cannot fill that role, no matter how much we love him. C Dave Estey (24-L) and LF Norm Mayer (30-L) were recalled from Portland. Jacksonville Jays (4-0 1.000 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at Hartford Whalers (2-2 .500 2 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division) JAX: Tommy Keyser (26-L) (11-5 2.94 ERA 144 IP, 126 H, 11 HR, 40 BB, 91 SO last year) HART: Wil Guerrero (27-R) (1-13 6.79 ERA 119.1 IP, 166 H, 13 HR, 65 BB, 53 SO last year as a rookie) Keyser did not face Hartford last season. We faced Guerrero once last year and scored 4 runs on 10 hits, 2 home runs and 5 walks with 4 strikeouts in 6.2 innings in no decision that we won. Brian Bowden grounds out to short, Dana Wagner making a good play. Cal Doty flies out to deep left... Bottom of the First Joel Yost swings at the first pitch and grounds one up the middle, but SS Brian Bowden somehow gets to the ball and makes the play! Dana Wagner grounds a 1-2 pitch to left for a hit.... Someday, P Jim Baucom will have a no hitter.... He had a 1-hitter in 2003. Ray Dallas draws a walk... Herman Chance, who won the game yesterday with a home run, pops out to right. Robbie McFarland strikes out looking! And we are being shut out again by a bum through through 5 innings.... Top of the Sixth After Cal Doty grounds into a double play to empty the bases, Ray McDonald hits a 3-2 pitch to center for a home run! 1 to 0, Jays! Fernando Tello hits a home run to right center! Back to back! 2 to 0, Jays! Bottom of the Seventh Robbie McFarland gets his second hit of the year with a line drive to center. The Bullpen gets up. Steve Gress flies out to deep center and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays! Won - 3 to 1 5-1 is not a bad start, but remember that the two teams we have played were the two last place teams from last year. Our bats were not very impressive against mediocre pitching.... We are back home to play our first good team of the season, the Rochester Roosters, a 4 game series. They split 4 games at home with Orlando over the weekend. We were 4-4 against them last year when the finished 83-79 in 4th place in the North. They were 7th in scoring with 682 runs and tied for 4th in fewest runs allowed with 627. Their run differential was +55, 6th best in the MLB. Rochester Roosters (4-2 .667 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (5-1 .833 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) ROCH: Pete Harris (26-R) (Season debut) JAX: Al Calice (25-R) (1-0 2.57 ERA 7 IP, 6 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 0 SO) Harris was in AAA all of last year, going 9-6 with a 4.52 ERA in 22 starts. Calice was 0-2 in 2 starts against the Roosters last year with a 4.22 ERA. 10.2 IP, 20 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 4 SO. Let's hope he looks better than in his first start when he walked 4 and struck out no one. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) ROCHESTER 1: 1B Glen Lewis (25-L .174-23-1-4-.601-2 B) RoY(02)/All-Star(4: 02-05) ex-Jay 2: 2B Jim Phillips (24-R .333-18-0-1-.833-1 C+) 3: RF Mike Herring (25-L .318-22-3-3-1.148-0 C+) 4: CF Tom Walker (26-R .316-19-0-3-.803-3 B+) Silver Slugger/All-Star(2: 04-05) 5: LF Ron LeMaster (28-L .294-17-0-3-.762-0 B+) 6: 3B Gary Russell (29-R .182-22-0-2-.432-0 B) All-Star 7: SS Eddie Taylor (26-R .143-21-0-0-.381-0 A) 8: C Emil Grossman (33-R .000-1-0-0-.000-0 C+) 9: P Pete Harris (26-L season debut D+) .189 career BA Lewis, who won the Rookie of the Year in 2002 with the Jays, has led the MLB in steals in each of the past two seasons. He was 2-10 with 1 SV and a 6.14 ERA in 36.2 IP last year. Fernando Tello swings at his first pitch and doubles to right center and McDonald scores! 8 to 1, Jays! Bottom of the Sixth Jack Washburn lines a 2-2 pitch to right for a double and goes to 3rd on a ground out. Cal Doty takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Ray McDonald pokes a hit to right center and Washburn scores! 9 to 1, Jays! Fernando Tello walks on 4 pitches to load the bases up with 1 out. Tom McDowell strikes out looking... The Roosters announced that RP Dave Martinez had a mild abdominal strain that they figured to bother him for about a week. Trudy's report on Robbie Hopley is also a mild abdominal strain that she thinks will bother him for about a week. We do not have any off days in the coming week and I do not want to be short a pitcher in the Pen, so we will put him on the DL. Around the League: Tom Peterson (35-R) of Memphis pitched an 8 hit shutout at home versus Buffalo. He did not walk a batter and struck out 7. It is the 21st shutout of his career, moving him into 1st place all-time, 1 ahead of Jim Baucom. |

Robbie Hopley (32-R) was put on the DL and RP Roger Wallace (30-R) was recalled from Portland (AAA). He has pitched 1 scoreless inning with 2 strikeouts for the Beavers. Rochester Roosters (4-3 .571 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (6-1 .857 1 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) ROCH: Larry Thornton (25-L) (1-0 2.25 ERA 8 IP, 5 H, 0 HR, 2 BB, 5 SO) All-Star JAX: Tommy Corris (25-R) (1-0 0.00 ERA 9 IP, 6 H, 0 HR, 0 BB, 2 SO) All-Star(2: 04-05) Thornton is the first lefty we have faced this season and the first good pitcher since the opening series against Memphis. He was an All-Star last year, his first as a starter, when he went 15-8 with a 2.94 ERA in 250.2 IP. We faced him once last year and beat him handily, scoring 6 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits, 1 home run and 1 walk with 4 strikeouts in 3.2 innings. He was prone to the long ball last year, which means our park is not the best place to show off his good side. Corris pitched a shutout and went 3 for 3 at the plate in his Jay debut. Rochester Roosters (5-3 .625 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (6-2 .750 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) ROCH: Benedict Hughes (26-L) (0-0 0.00 ERA 6 IP, 3 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 4 SO) All-Star JAX: Del Warwick (31-L) (1-0 5.14 ERA 7 IP, 10 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 1 SO) Gold Glove(02) Hughes is 1-2 in 5 starts against the Jays in his career with a 3.31 ERA. 35.1 IP, 27 H, 2 HR, 19 BB, 26 SO. He was an All-Star last year when he went 15-11 with a 2.84 ERA in 237.1 IP. Another tough lefty, though this one is a bit wild, usually. He led the MLB in walks with 108 in 2004 and walked 4.6 per 9 innings. He cut that to 3.6 last year, though, and only walked 1 in his first start this season in 6 innings.
