1910 WORLD SERIES

9/23/1910 - GAME 1 ATHLETICS 1 - GIANTS 5

Christy Mathewson shut down the defending champs allowing only 4 hits in the opener. Bill Sweeney had 2 hits and 2 RBI for the Giants in the win.

9/24/1910 - GAME 2 ATHLETICS 3 - GIANTS 4, 10 innings

Jim St. Vrain was a workhorse, pitching all 10 innings of this extended affair. The A's got out to a 3-0 in the 5th, but New york didn't give up, tying the game in the bottom of the 9th on an RBI single by emergency CF Emil Batch (who did not have a hit during the regular season), and winning it in the bottom of the 10th as George Stone notched his 2nd RBI of the night. The Athletics head back to Philly in a deep 2-0 hole.

9/26/1910 - GAME 3 GIANTS 2 - ATHLETICS 7

Back in the City of Brotherly Love, Matty McIntyre took things into his own hands with a 4 for 4 day in front of the home crowd, delivering the A's first win on a platter.

9/27/1910 - GAME 4 GIANTS 6 - ATHLETICS 3

Christy Mathewson gets his second win of the Series with a complete game. Bill Sweeney must like when Big Six pitches...he had another 2 hit, 2 RBI day. The Giants are now 1 win away from getting that big Philly monkey off their backs.

9/28/1910 - GAME 5 GIANTS 7 - ATHLETICS 4, 10 innings

Rube Manning blows another game in extra innings, allowing 3 runs in the top of the 10th. Gene Ford mows the A's down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th to give the Giants their first ever World series championship.

By the way, guys.... I should get through 3 or 4 seasons in the next couple days. I was given a surprise vacation when the power completely blew up in my school yesterday. The power company has to come in to do a bunch of digging, so school was cancelled for the safety of the students.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 11, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1911: The decade of the teens begins with the Philadelphia Athletics' star fading. Napoleon Lajoie is 36, likely to retire soon and teams like Cleveland and St. Louis are slavering at the chance to be named the heir to their throne. They're not dead yet, however, and we wouldn't be surprised if the entire team outperforms their talent, or if a blockbuster trade adds a couple years to to the Philly dynasty. In the NL, it appears that the Giants may be creating a dynasty of their own. Mathewson and St. Vrain provide a killer 1-2 punch that few teams can even imagine matching. Something drastic would have to occur to knock them off their perch.

Prospect Watch: JOHN "SHELLY" SHELTON

Shelton is the latest in the crop of potentially great leadoff hitters we have profiled. There is one difference, however. Shelly, as he prefers to be called, is near ready for the bigs at the tender age of 19. The #1 pick will almost certainly be Shelton or the phenom named "Shoeless Joe" Jackson.

SEPTEMBER 25, 1911: The American League is in a period of transition and parity, as is evident from the tight race this season. For a while it seemed that the A's might hold on to the flag for the 5th straight season, but a deadline trade with Chicago (A) for Tris Speaker proved the final key to Boston's worst to first run. Combined with "Shoeless Joe" Jackson and the surprising Fred Beck, the Red Sox have quite the potent offense.

1911 WORLD SERIES

9/23/1911 - GAME 1 GIANTS - RED SOX 1

Christy Mathewson pitched a complete game, holding the Red Sox's vaunted offense to only one run. Looks like the Giants are continuing where they left off last year. Oscar Stanage led them with 2 hits and an RBI.

9/24/1911 - GAME 2 GIANTS 7 - RED SOX 6

Another one-run game puts New York up 2 games to 0 as the Series heads back to the Big Apple. Sammy Strang slapped out 3 hits and knocked in 2 runs in the game. Things are looking grim for the Red Sox.

9/26/1911 - GAME 3 RED SOX 9 - GIANTS 7

The Sox hold off a charge from the Giants to win their first game of the Series. Ossie Schreckengost and Frank Laporte each got 3 hits for Boston. They had been leading 6-2, but New York scored 5 in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead. They refused to give up, though, and scored 3 runs in the next 2 innings to take it.

9/27/1911 - GAME 4 RED SOX 2 - GIANTS 7

Mathewson shut down the Sox again as the Giants contributed from all parts of the lineup. Only Doc Miller was unable to get on base for New York. Giants are one win away from a repeat.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 12, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1912: The tide has turned and the top teams in baseball now appear to reside in the National League. They are easily the favorites to win their 5th NL pennant in the past 6 years. Over in the American League, the Red Sox boast what may very well be the best offense in the game. With the likes of Tris Speaker and Joe Jackson topping off their batting order, no lead is safe. Watch out if they both get hot at the same time. Both of them are quite young, so we should expect to see the Red Sox near the top of the standings throughout the remainder of the teens.

Prospect Watch: CHRIS "THE GRIMSBY LOCOMOTIVE" JOYCE

He may sound funny, but this kid isn't down south of his Ontario home just for the weather. Joyce can pitch. Hailing from Grimsby, Ontario, this young man is proof positive that baseball is not just a sport for the United States, but also for the rest of the Americas...and eventually the world. While other kids were smacking rubber pucks around on the ice, Joyce was finetuning his talents in snowball fights. Packed just right, an iceball can be nearly the same density as a regulation baseball.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 12, ISSUE 2

SEPTEMBER 22, 1912: The American League was a horse race all season long. With 9 games left, the Bronchos and surprising Athletics were tied atop the standings with last year's champs, the Red Sox, at 2 games back. That's when Boston took it into their hands and commenced with the greatest finish to a season that we have seen in some time. It took 9 consecutive wins by the boys from Beantown, but when the dust had settled, the Red Sox had overcome the two other teams and were preparing for a return trip to the World Series.

The National League race wasn't as much of a blowout as 1911, but in the end, the results were the same. The Giants had won for the 3rd straight year and were headed back for a rematch against the Red Sox. In the NL, it appears that the Giants may be creating a dynasty of their own. Mathewson and St. Vrain provide a killer 1-2 punch that few teams can even imagine matching.
