It's Friday, May 1, 1981… As we step into the second month of the 1981 ABL Championship Season, the excitement is palpable. The inaugural month is now in the books, and each of the 24 teams has cleanly burst out of the starting blocks. The race is officially on and we're starting to see the early contenders and those in need of a spark. May promises to be a month filled with crucial matchups that could set the tone for the rest of the season. Early in the month, teams will face opponents from other divisions within their conference, providing a mix of challenges as they strive to gain ground in the standings. As the month progresses, attention will shift back to intense intra-division games, where the stakes are even higher. These late-May divisional matchups will be crucial, as teams battle their closest rivals for the top spot, knowing that each victory or loss could have a significant impact on their path to the Grand Tournament of Champions. So buckle up, ABL fans, because May is here, and it’s going to be a thrilling ride! ⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾ Real. ABC 1981 Weekend Series 4 PREVIEW
Watch it on ABL Vision New York Aces vs. Pittsburgh Express... New York comes into the series tied for the top spot in the ABC East with a 13-10 record. They have a +15 run differential and have been solid at home (8-5) but are looking to bounce back after a recent loss. Their performance in one-run games (1-3) has been less than ideal, but they are still a strong contender. Pittsburgh is struggling this season with an 8-15 record and a -27 run differential. They have had a tough time both at home (6-7) and on the road (2-8). Coming off a four-game losing streak, they are in desperate need of a turnaround. New York should be favored in this series, especially playing at home, but Pittsburgh will be fighting hard to break their losing streak. If the Aces can perform better in close games, they should be able to take this series. Boston Patriots vs. Philadelphia Fury... Boston is currently tied with New York at the top of the division with a 13-10 record. They are riding a six-game winning streak, thanks to strong performances both at home (10-4) and on the road (3-6). With a +14 run differential, they are in excellent form. Philadelphia sits two games back with an 11-12 record. They have a +6 run differential and have been better on the road (9-8) than at home (2-4). They are coming off a win and will look to gain ground on Boston. This series could be pivotal in the division race. Boston’s current hot streak makes them the favorites, but Philadelphia’s road success suggests they could challenge the Patriots. Expect a competitive series with implications for the top of the division. Cincinnati Cougars vs. Nashville Blues... Cincinnati is part of a three-way tie at the top of the ABC Central with a 12-11 record. They have a +23 run differential, highlighting their ability to outscore opponents. Strong at home (10-4) but weaker on the road (2-7), they’ll be looking to maintain their position. Nashville also holds a 12-11 record, with a +16 run differential. They’ve been more successful on the road (8-9) than at home (4-2), and they’re currently on a three-game winning streak. This series is crucial for Nashville to continue their momentum. This series could define the direction of the ABC Central Division. Both teams have strengths that could make for an exciting and tightly contested matchup. Cincinnati’s home advantage might give them the edge, but Nashville’s recent form makes them a formidable opponent. St. Louis Stallions vs. Houston Mavericks... St. Louis is the third team in the ABC Central tied at 12-11. They have a +23 run differential and have shown balanced performance at home (7-6) and on the road (5-5). However, they are coming off two straight losses and will be looking to rebound. Houston is at the bottom of the division with a 9-14 record and a significant -41 run differential. They’ve struggled at home (6-7) and on the road (3-7) and are currently on a three-game losing streak. They’ll need to find a way to turn things around quickly. St. Louis has the upper hand in this series, given their stronger overall performance and run differential. However, Houston, playing at home, will be desperate to end their losing streak and could prove to be a tough challenge. Las Vegas Gamblers vs. Seattle Comets... The Gamblers are the best team in the league with an 18-5 record and a staggering +51 run differential. They are currently on a six-game winning streak and have been dominant both at home (11-2) and on the road (7-3). They are the team to beat in the ABC. Seattle, with a 12-11 record, is tied for second in the division but trails Las Vegas by six games. They have a -23 run differential but have been solid on the road (6-4) and are currently on a two-game winning streak. They’ve been successful in extra-inning games, going 3-0, which could be a factor in close games. Las Vegas is the clear favorite, given their dominant form, but Seattle has shown resilience in tight games and will be looking to challenge the league leaders. This series could solidify Las Vegas’s dominance or give Seattle a chance to close the gap. Denver Rocketeers vs. Portland Lumberjacks... Denver shares a 12-11 record with Seattle, placing them six games behind Las Vegas. They have an even run differential (0), indicating a well-balanced team. However, they have lost their last two games and will need to bounce back in this series. Portland has the worst record in the division at 6-17 and a -57 run differential, the worst in the league. They’ve been particularly poor on the road (4-13) and are currently on a five-game losing streak. They need a turnaround desperately to avoid further sinking in the standings. Denver should be favored in this series, especially given Portland’s struggles. The Rocketeers have a chance to gain ground in the division, while Portland will be fighting to end their losing streak and start clawing back some respectability. Real. Fictional. ⚾. ================================================== ================================================== =========================== ABL on StatsPlus | ABL on OOTP | ABL History | ABL (prime) the old thread | ABL Stat of the day | ABL Vision | ABL Real Time Sim | Major Sim Baseball Last edited by ZapMast; 09-01-2025 at 03:37 PM. |

NBC 1981 Weekend Series 4 PREVIEW
Watch it on ABL Vision Charlotte Colonels vs. Tampa Bay Storm... The Colonels, leading the NBC East with a 16-7 record, are strong at home (11-2) and boast a +33 run differential. With a balanced team and a hot streak (7-3 in their last 10 games), they will look to continue their dominance against a struggling Tampa Bay squad. At 10-13, the Storm have been inconsistent, particularly at home (2-11), but surprisingly solid on the road (8-2). They have a -6 run differential and have struggled in one-run games. However, they come into this series with a bit of momentum, having won their last two games. Expect Charlotte to leverage their home advantage and superior form. However, if Tampa Bay can continue their road success, this series could be closer than it appears on paper. Miami Hurricanes vs. Atlanta Kings... Miami is sitting at 11-12, five games behind Charlotte. They’ve been better on the road (8-9) than at home (3-3), and they’ve struggled with a -23 run differential. Their recent form is shaky, with a 4-6 record in their last 10 games. The Kings are having a tough season, currently at 6-17 with a -33 run differential. They’ve struggled both at home (4-10) and on the road (2-7), and their recent form isn’t encouraging (4-6 in their last 10 games). However, they will look to capitalize on Miami’s inconsistency. This series could be a chance for Miami to get back on track, while Atlanta will be desperate to break out of their slump. Expect a competitive series as both teams seek to improve their standing. Chicago Fire vs. Detroit Dukes... Chicago comes into this series with a strong 14-9 record, sharing the top spot in the NBC Central. They’ve been excellent at home (11-3) but less so on the road (3-6). They have a +23 run differential and are on a five-game winning streak, making them one of the hottest teams in the league. Detroit also holds a 14-9 record, making this a battle for division supremacy. They’ve been strong on the road (10-7) but have played fewer games at home (4-2). With a +9 run differential, they’ve been slightly less dominant than Chicago, and they’ve lost their last two games. This series is crucial for the top spot in the NBC Central. Chicago’s home dominance and hot streak make them slight favorites, but Detroit’s strong road performance suggests this could be a tightly contested series. Dallas Rustlers vs. Minneapolis Blizzard... Dallas shares the division lead with a 14-9 record. They’ve been solid both at home (9-4) and on the road (5-5), with a +15 run differential. The Rustlers are coming off two straight wins and will be looking to continue their momentum. At 8-15, the Blizzard are at the bottom of the NBC Central. They’ve struggled mightily on the road (0-10), though they’ve been decent at home (8-5). With a -11 run differential and a four-game losing streak, they’ll be looking to turn things around. Dallas is the clear favorite in this matchup, especially considering Minneapolis’ poor road record. However, the Blizzard will be eager to snap their losing streak, making this an intriguing series. San Francisco Warriors vs. Phoenix Firebirds... The Warriors lead the NBC West with a 14-9 record and a strong +35 run differential. They’ve been consistent both at home (8-5) and on the road (6-4). Riding a three-game winning streak, they’ll be confident heading into this series. Phoenix is 10-13, four games behind San Francisco. They’ve struggled more at home (5-8) than on the road (5-5) and have a concerning -27 run differential. However, they are coming off a win and will look to build on that. San Francisco’s overall strength makes them the favorites, but Phoenix has shown resilience in close games. The Firebirds will need to improve their home form to compete in this series. Los Angeles Cobras vs. San Diego Seraphs... LA is just one game behind San Francisco with a 13-10 record. They’ve been better on the road (7-2) than at home (6-8), and their +13 run differential indicates solid performance. However, they’ve lost their last three games, making this series crucial for them. The Seraphs are struggling at 8-15 with a -28 run differential. They’ve been particularly poor at home (1-5) and haven’t fared much better on the road (7-10). Coming off a loss, they need a strong performance to turn their season around. Los Angeles will be looking to bounce back from their recent slump, and San Diego’s struggles at home make LA the favorites. However, the Seraphs could capitalize on LA’s current vulnerability. Real. Fictional. ⚾. ================================================== ================================================== =========================== ABL on StatsPlus | ABL on OOTP | ABL History | ABL (prime) the old thread | ABL Stat of the day | ABL Vision | ABL Real Time Sim | Major Sim Baseball Last edited by ZapMast; 09-01-2025 at 03:17 PM. |

ABL - Injury Update
Michael Dickens could soon be placed on the injured list. The Charlotte right fielder told reporters that he expects to be "out of commission" for 6 months because of a broken bone in the elbow. He hasn't played since 04/28/1981 and, he said, he's "itchin' to get back out there." Dickens is currently batting .282 with 1 home run and 12 RBIs. The injury that has kept Luis Otero out of action since 04/28/1981 will keep him out a while longer. Seattle Comets officials made the announcement this afternoon. They said that Otero is expected to miss at least 5 months with a fractured knee. This season, Otero is batting .265 with no home runs. His totals include 8 RBIs and 8 runs scored. Team officials for the San Diego Seraphs have revealed that the recent injury to Leonardo Gonzalez will keep him out for 5-6 weeks. The 30-year-old right fielder suffered a fractured finger on 04/25/1981. He has not played since. This season, Gonzalez is batting .281 with 2 home runs. The injury that has kept Tony Calhoun out of action since 04/23/1981 will keep him out a while longer. Phoenix Firebirds officials made the announcement this afternoon. They said that Calhoun is expected to miss at least 4-5 months with a torn calf muscle. Real. The Flavor --- insight into the Action Baseball League
Lumberjacks manager, Tim Staheli, had some choice words for the Portland media today. "Whatever happened to journalistic integrity?" the Lumberjacks skipper asked during a live radio interview. "No one cares about reporting the facts anymore. It's all about sensationalism these days. All you guys care about is selling newspapers and driving up ratings. And I'm getting pretty damn sick of it." Staheli seemed to be referring to recent stories that have suggested the Lumberjacks struggles as of late have been the result of off-field distractions. One article, which accuses Nick Jones of numerous "extracurricular indiscretions", has been a particularly sore subject for Staheli. "What players do on their own time is their business, but to imply that any of my players aren't giving it their all on the field is absolutely ridiculous," Staheli said, "and to make these kinds of accusations against someone without any proof is just plain irresponsible!" Team officials had no comment when asked about Staheli's remarks. Real. Fictional. |

The game between the Boston Patriots and the Philadelphia Fury was a tightly contested pitching duel for much of the evening. Boston's offense struggled against Philadelphia's starting pitcher, Gilberto Flores, failing to produce any hits through the first four innings. The Patriots finally broke through in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on singles by Sandy Fierro and David Ramos, giving them a 2-nothing lead. Despite this, they left several runners on base throughout the game, unable to capitalize on more opportunities to extend their lead. Philadelphia's offense was similarly stymied by Boston's pitcher, Victor Martinez, who kept them scoreless through eight innings. However, in a dramatic turn of events, the Fury came alive in the bottom of the ninth. After a couple of singles by Johnny Amaro and Ron Stout, Rich Pena delivered a game-winning three-run home run, leading Philadelphia to a walk-off victory with a final score of 3-2. Martinez's dominant performance was undone by one powerful swing, allowing the Fury to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the final inning. The winning pitcher is... Oscar Rebeles... his record improves to... 1-1... The loss... and the blown save goes to... Adam Smith... His record falls to 1-2... and it's his second blown save. The player of the game is Patriots Starting pitcher... Victor Martinez. The paid attendance was 19,585 satisfied fans. To recap... Oscar Rebeles snagged the win in relief. He goes to 1-1 on the season. Adam Smith suffered the loss. The loss drops the Patriots to 13-11. Philadelphia got a clutch hit from Rich Pena. The third baseman launched a 3-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a kill shot. After the game, Philadelphia manager Danny Sanchez applauded the team's effort. "They busted their tails out there," he said. Philadelphia improves to 12-12. Note that, Gilberto Flores sets the Philadelphia Fury regular season game record for strikeouts... with 13. Philadelphia Fury 3 – Boston Patriots 2.. Until next time... This is the Game! Real. Let's take a look at the totals for today's game. First for the victorious Chicago Fire, 6 runs, on 14 hits, 1 error, they left 7 men on base. Their record improves to 15-9. for the Detroit Dukes, 5 runs, on 8 hits, No errors, they left 10 men on base. They fall to 14-10. The Chicago Fire edged out the Detroit Dukes 6-5 in a nail-biter at Dukes Field on May 1, 1981. Chicago started strong with early runs in the first three innings, highlighted by Alex O'Donnell's sharp double in the first and Miguel Morales' crucial extra-base hits, including a third-inning double and a ninth-inning triple. But the game took a dramatic turn in the fourth inning when Detroit capitalized on a critical error by Chicago's shortstop Miguel Martinez, sparking a four-run rally. Mezian Ridha’s clutch double and Luis Rios’ groundball single brought the Dukes roaring back, but Chicago's Heriberto Jimenez, despite some rough patches, managed to keep the Dukes from scoring again. The sixth inning proved decisive, with Sal Gamez and Victor Hernandez launching back-to-back solo home runs off Detroit’s starter Jose Flores, tying the game and setting the stage for O'Donnell's go-ahead double in the seventh off Bill Hackman. Jimenez dug deep, delivering eight gritty innings before closer Matt Hyman sealed the win with a perfect ninth, securing his fifth save. The victory pushed Chicago to a 15-9 record, while Detroit, now 14-10, was left to rue missed opportunities and the fine margins that often decide games in the ABL. The 28,076 fans in attendance witnessed a contest that encapsulated the drama and unpredictability that makes ABL baseball so compelling. The winning pitcher is... Heriberto Jimenez... his record improves to... 5-1... The save goes to... Chicago closer, Matt Hyman, his fifth The loss... goes to... Bill Hackman... His record falls to 0-1... The player of the game is Fire Starting Pitcher... Heriberto Jimenez... The paid attendance was 28,076 disgruntled fans. To recap... Baseball fans saw a good contest between the Chicago Fire and Detroit Dukes. The Chicago Fire picked up a win at Dukes Field, knocking off the Detroit Dukes, 6-5. Starting pitcher Heriberto Jimenez was a big reason why. The loss makes Detroit 14-10. Chicago took a 6-5 lead on Alex O' Donell's 7th double of the season. The run-scoring double, which O' Donell hit in the top of the seventh, left Detroit pitcher Bill Hackman visibly frustrated. "If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Jimenez told the Chicago Today. Chicago improves to 15-9. This is Big Earl signing off from Dukes Field. Where today's final score is... Chicago Fire 6 – Detroit Dukes 5 Until next time... This is the Game! Real. Fictional. ⚾. ================================================== ================================================== =========================== ABL on StatsPlus | ABL on OOTP | ABL History | ABL (prime) the old thread | ABL Stat of the day | ABL Vision | ABL Real Time Sim | Major Sim Baseball Last edited by ZapMast; 09-01-2025 at 03:14 PM. |

ABL - Week 4 Best Players [April 27- May 3, 1981]
Miguel Morales is respected by most Chicago Fire fans for his no-frills style of play. The 26-year-old center fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the National Baseball Conference Player of the Week honors. He compiled a .462 average (12-for-26) with 3 home runs, 9 RBIs and 5 runs scored. So far this season, Morales is batting .366 with 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and 18 runs scored. He has 37 hits in 101 at-bats, 10 walks and a .421 OBP. Morales has played in 25 games. There's no arguing that 35-year-old Joe Turner has paid his dues and this week he collected. The Boston Patriots first baseman had one of the best weeks of his career and captured the American Baseball Conference Player of the Week trophy. He hit .476 while collecting 10 hits in 21 at-bats, 4 home runs, 7 RBIs and 6 runs scored. Turner on the season is batting .377 with 9 home runs. His totals include 21 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He has played in 20 games. Real. Fictional. ⚾. ================================================== ================================================== =========================== ABL on StatsPlus | ABL on OOTP | ABL History | ABL (prime) the old thread | ABL Stat of the day | ABL Vision | ABL Real Time Sim | Major Sim Baseball Last edited by ZapMast; 09-01-2025 at 03:13 PM. |

NBC – WKND Series 4 Results – May 1 – 3, 1981
See it on ABL Vision Click on the ABL Vision Box - [<>] - to see highlights Tampa Bay Storm (10-16) @ Charlotte Colonels (19-7) Colonels Sweep Series 3-0 Charlotte continues to cruise within the division. Here's the skinny: The Charlotte Colonels dominated their series against the Tampa Bay Storm, sweeping all three games with commanding performances. In Game 1, Miguel Salazar led the Colonels to a 14-1 rout, going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Manny Flores added a crucial 3-run homer in the first inning. Game 2 was tighter, but Charlotte prevailed 4-3, thanks to Jose Vicario's 3-for-4 performance and Sergio Barraza's bases-loaded walk that broke a tie in the fifth inning. The series concluded with a 5-2 victory in Game 3, where Tony Barnes pitched 6.1 innings of shutout ball, and Nigel Hudson's 3-run homer secured the win. The Colonels improved to an impressive 19-7, while the Storm struggled, dropping to 10-16. GAME 1 - Salazar, Colonels Torpedo Storm The Charlotte Colonels topped the Tampa Bay Storm, 14-1, with center fielder Miguel Salazar playing a big role. Salazar went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for the Colonels in the win. The loss drops the Tampa Bay record to a disappointing 10-14. Manny Flores had a big 3-run home run for the Colonels in the bottom of the first inning. With Charlotte trailing 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he sized up a fastball from Brian Manchester, who finished 5th in the NBC in wins with 17 in 1979, and punished it. The result was his 5th home run of the season, which put the Colonels on top, 3-1. Tampa Bay manager Mike Khoury called the blowout loss "a real stinker." GAME 2 - Storm Come Up Short at Charlotte, 4-3 The Charlotte Colonels topped the Tampa Bay Storm by a score of 4-3. Leading the way was second baseman Jose Vicario. Vicario was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Colonels. Edwin Martinez collected save number 7. Charlotte goes to 18-7. Sergio Barraza drew 1 walk in 4 plate appearances for Charlotte. The 25-year old third baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 3-3 tie with a run-scoring walk off Sergio Martinez. It was his 8th walk of the season. "Feels good to get the job done," Barraza said after the game GAME 3 - Colonels Rack Up 5-2 Win Versus Tampa Bay The rain came, as predicted, but the Charlotte Colonels and Tampa Bay Storm were able to complete their ballgame. Tony Barnes, who finished 3rd in the NBC in ERA with 3.00 last year, propelled his team to victory over the Tampa Bay Storm. The final score was 5-2, Charlotte. The winner was Barnes. He threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball. The loser was Julio Gonzalez. The Colonels got a big at-bat from designated hitter Nigel Hudson. For the game, Hudson went 1-4 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the third, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 3rd home run of the season gave Charlotte a 3-0 lead.[<>] "We need better swings, better at-bats," said losing manager Mike Khoury. The loss makes Tampa Bay 10-16. Atlanta Kings (7-19) @ Miami Hurricanes (13-13) Hurricanes Win Series 2-1 'Canes take series in walk-off style. Here's the skinny: The Miami Hurricanes and Atlanta Kings faced off in a series that highlighted the contrasting fortunes of both teams. In Game 1, Atlanta's Bill Ybanez pitched a masterful 1-0 shutout, allowing just one hit over eight innings to secure only the Kings' seventh win in 24 games. Miami bounced back in Game 2, with Bill Borden leading the Hurricanes to a 4-2 victory, thanks in part to Jason Bozeman's clutch 2-run double in the fifth inning. The series concluded with a dramatic 5-4 win for Miami in Game 3, where Pat Watters delivered a walk-off double in the ninth inning, overcoming a stellar 4-for-5 performance by Atlanta's Marcos Valverde. The Kings dropped to 7-19, while Miami's resilience kept them competitive at 13-13. GAME 1 - Ybanez, Atlanta Prevail in Pitchers' Duel Bill Ybanez pitched a gem in leading Atlanta to a 1-0 victory over the Miami Hurricanes. The Kings, with only their 7th win in 24 games, could be the worst team in the league. Ybanez delivered a quality start for Atlanta. The 6-foot-1 right-hander allowed no earned runs on 1 hit over 8 innings of work. "It's about putting our team in the best position to win ballgames," said Ybanez. GAME 2 - Hurricanes Prevail, 4-2, Over Atlanta The home crowd had a good time watching the Atlanta Kings and Miami Hurricanes get after it. The Miami Hurricanes beat the Atlanta Kings, 4-2. Miami pitcher and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, native Bill Borden led the way. The loss has the Kings at 7-18. The Hurricanes got a big at-bat from left fielder Jason Bozeman. For the game, Bozeman was 1-4 with a double, while adding 2 RBI. In the bottom of the fifth, with the bases loaded, he stroked a 2-run double. His 8th double of the season gave Miami a 3-2 lead. Bozeman attributed the win to his team's "hyper resolve." GAME 3 - Hurricanes Earn Late 5-4 Win The Miami Hurricanes withstood an impressive performance by Atlanta third baseman Marcos Valverde to defeat the Kings, 5-4, at Hurricanes Park. Valverde was 4 for 5 with 4 singles, while scoring 2 times. Atlanta falls to 7-19. The defining moment came in the bottom of the ninth for Miami. That's when Pat Watters hit a run-scoring double off 29-year old right-handed pitcher Sergio Duran to win the game. The home crowd went wild.[<>] Miami manager Seth Coe praised his team's "energy." Chicago Fire (15-11) @ Detroit Dukes (16-10) Dukes Win Series 2-1 Detroit walks off in tough division series. Here's the skinny: The Detroit Dukes and Chicago Fire engaged in a thrilling three-game series that saw momentum shift between the two teams. In Game 1, Chicago secured a 6-5 victory thanks to Alex O'Donnell's decisive run-scoring double in the seventh inning, leaving Detroit's pitcher Bill Hackman frustrated. Detroit responded with an emphatic 11-2 win in Game 2, driven by Ahmed Hayes, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, taking the Dukes to a 15-10 record. The series finale was a nail-biter, with Detroit edging out a 4-3 win on a walk-off single by Alex Escobedo in the ninth, despite Chicago's Miguel Morales hitting two home runs. Detroit finished the series with a strong 16-10 record, showcasing their ability to win in both blowouts and close contests. GAME 1 - Fire Prevail, 6-5, Over Detroit Baseball fans saw a good contest between the Chicago Fire and Detroit Dukes. GAME 2 - Dukes Whack Fire, 11-2 Ahmed Hayes was a major contributor to the 11-2 Detroit win over Chicago. The Dukes second baseman went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 4. The win puts Detroit at 15-10. The game turned with one out in the bottom of the fourth. That's when Hayes hit a 2-run home run off Tony Espinal. It propelled the Dukes into the lead, 4-2. "I really like what we did out there today," Hayes said after the game. GAME 3 - Dukes Win Squeaker, 4-3, Over Fire The Detroit Dukes and Chicago Fire completed their game despite the inclement weather. Despite a fine performance by left fielder Miguel Morales, the Chicago Fire lost to the Detroit Dukes, 4-3. Morales slugged 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. The win has Detroit at 16-10. Alex Escobedo was the walk-off hero for Detroit. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dukes shortstop hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.[<>] Escobedo told a Detroit Times reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win. Minneapolis Blizzard (9-17) @ Dallas Rustlers (16-10) Rustlers Win Series 2-1 Despite the Thompson eruption, Dallas cruises to series win. Here's the skinny: The Dallas Rustlers and Minneapolis Blizzard squared off in a three-game series where Dallas emerged victorious in two out of three games. In Game 1, Dallas secured a 7-3 win, powered by Bill Rambow's 3-for-5 performance, including a crucial run-scoring double in the third inning. Minneapolis responded in Game 2 with a 6-3 victory, highlighted by Ricky Thompson's incredible 5-for-6 day at the plate, raising his season average to .439. However, Dallas bounced back in Game 3, winning 7-3, thanks to Gabriel Zayas' solid pitching and Alejandro Rosado's clutch 2-run single in the eighth inning. The series left Dallas strong at 16-10, while Minneapolis continued to struggle at 9-17. GAME 1 - Blizzard Suffer 7-3 Road Loss Dallas right fielder Bill Rambow helped his team beat the Minneapolis Blizzard, 7-3. Rambow, who finished 5th in the ABC in on-base percentage with .395 in 1972, went 3 for 5 for the Rustlers. Dallas pitcher Anton Garay got the win, upping his record to 4-0. David Bain got the loss. The defeat makes Minneapolis 8-16. With Dallas leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Rambow hit a fastball from David Bain for a run-scoring double. It was his 5th double of the season and put the Rustlers ahead, 2-0. "Winning the game is always the first objective," Rambow said. GAME 2 - Thompson Batters Dallas for 5 Hits Ricky Thompson did a number on the Rustlers in the 6-3 Minneapolis victory -- and the number was 5. The Blizzard first baseman banged out 5 hits in 6 at-bats at Rustlers Grounds to lead his club past the Dallas Rustlers. "I felt good in the batter's box," he said. "I had confidence in my swing and knew that it was there and that I could get the job done." Ricky Thompson singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, flied out in the 8th and singled in the 9th. Thompson is hitting .439 this year with no home runs, 7 RBIs and 18 runs scored. He has 43 hits in 98 at-bats, 7 walks and a .476 on-base percentage. Thompson has played in 25 games. GAME 3 - Blizzard Popped by Rustlers, 7-3 Dallas picked up a win at Rustlers Grounds, bumping off the Minneapolis Blizzard, 7-3. Pitcher Gabriel Zayas was a major reason the Rustlers emerged victorious. In 8 innings, Zayas surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 0. He allowed 3 runs. The Blizzard, now 9-17, continue their slow start. Had Alejandro Rosado not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Rosado hit a 2-run single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Rustlers. "I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Rosado. San Francisco Warriors (15-11) @ Phoenix Firebirds (12-14) Firebirds Win Series 2-1 Phoenix pitching the difference as division rivals trade blow-out wins. Here's the skinny: The San Francisco Warriors and Phoenix Firebirds faced off in a three-game series marked by dominant performances from both sides. In Game 1, San Francisco cruised to a 10-0 victory, with Daniel Anderson leading the charge by going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, supported by Miguel Collado's 2-run homer in the first inning. However, Phoenix rebounded in Game 2 with a commanding 14-0 win, as Stephen Grimes nearly pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit over 8.2 innings. The Firebirds continued their momentum in Game 3, securing a 5-1 victory behind Jose Contreras' strong pitching and Josh Harrison's 2-run double. The series left Phoenix at 12-14, showing their resilience after a tough start, while San Francisco remains competitive at 15-11 despite the Game 2 blowout loss. GAME 1 - Anderson Helps San Francisco Cruise to 10-0 Win Daniel Anderson was a vital contributor to the 10-0 San Francisco victory over Phoenix. In the top of the first, Miguel Collado ambushed a first pitch changeup from Kerry Darling and hit a 2-run home run. It gave San Francisco a quick 2-0 lead. "We understand we didn't play our best baseball," said losing manager Bill Benisch. "We'll shower it off and be ready to compete." GAME 2 - Grimes Now 2-2 Following 14-0 Win The Phoenix Firebirds rode a solid performance from 29-year-old starting pitcher Stephen Grimes to a win, beating the San Francisco Warriors, 14-0, at Phoenix Grounds. With Phoenix leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a sinker from Kyle Chambers, who finished 5th in the ABC in innings pitched with 255.1 in 1979, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 5th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Firebirds ahead, 3-0.[<>] "Nice win for us," said Harrison. "Now we'll go after the next one." Los Angeles Cobras (14-12) @ San Diego Seraphs (10-16) San Diego Wins Series 2-1 San Diego manages to best Cobras in tough division fight. Here's the skinny: The San Diego Seraphs and Los Angeles Cobras clashed in a three-game series that saw both teams fighting hard for wins. In Game 1, San Diego took a 6-4 victory with Dante Ramos leading the way, hitting a 3-run homer in the first inning to set the tone. Despite a strong 3-for-3 performance from Los Angeles' Emmanuel Robertson, it wasn't enough to overcome the Seraphs. Game 2 saw the Cobras bounce back with a 7-6 win, thanks to Orlando Greeley's 3-for-5 effort and Ramon Reyes' game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. San Diego responded in the final game with a 5-2 win, as Kennie Murdock delivered a solid pitching performance and Masakuni Shiratori's 2-run single in the first inning provided an early lead. The Seraphs improved to 10-16, while the Cobras at 14-12 continue to battle despite the tough losses. GAME 1 - Seraphs Win at Home, 6-4 Los Angeles got a terrific game from second baseman Emmanuel Robertson. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to San Diego, 6-4. His 1st home run of the season gave San Diego a 3-0 lead. "It never gets old," said Ramos. "Winning, that is." San Diego is still hoping to get on a roll. The win is just their 9th in 24 games. GAME 2 - Cobras Get Hard-Earned Win The Los Angeles Cobras beat the San Diego Seraphs by a score of 7-6. Los Angeles third baseman Orlando Greeley deserved the lion's share of the credit. Greeley was 3-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Cobras. The loss puts San Diego at 9-16. Ramon Reyes drove in one run for Los Angeles. The 26-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the top of the ninth. With one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he broke a 6-6 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Victor Hernandez. It was his 10th RBI of the season. "It doesn't matter if you're 10 games over .500 or 10 games under, it feels good to win," Reyes told the Los Angeles Daily News. GAME 3 - San Diego Claims 5-2 Victory San Diego Seraphs starter Kennie Murdock pitched his team past the Los Angeles Cobras, 5-2. San Diego, now 10-16, is off to a slow start. San Diego third baseman Masakuni Shiratori contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the first. With two down, he hit a fastball to center field for a 2-run single. It was his 16th hit of the season and put the Seraphs ahead, 3-0.[<>] "It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said San Diego manager Jesse Wade. "It's usually not just one thing." Real. Las Vegas got a knockout punch from Jeff Smith. The third baseman hammered a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the game. Denver Rocketeers (13-13) @ Portland Lumberjacks (8-18) Lumberjacks Win Series 2-1 'Jacks win first series of the season in dramatic fashion. Here's the skinny: The Portland Lumberjacks and Denver Rocketeers faced off in a tightly contested three-game series, with Portland managing to take two of the three games. In Game 1, Portland secured a 6-3 victory, thanks to Jeremy Campbell's grand slam in the fifth inning that erased a 3-0 deficit and put the Lumberjacks ahead for good. Despite their struggles this season, Portland found a way to win with David Rodriguez delivering a solid 7-inning performance on the mound. Denver bounced back in Game 2 with a 6-5 win, led by Boboy Nierva's 4-RBI effort, including a crucial 2-run homer in the sixth inning. The series finale was a nail-biter, with Portland winning 2-1 on a walk-off single by Mike Hargett in the bottom of the ninth. The Rocketeers, now 13-13, continue their uneven start to the season, while Portland sits at 8-18, still fighting to turn things around. ABL 1981 Weekend Series 4 Results and Weekday Series 5 PREVIEW
Watch it on... ⚾ ⚾ ⚾ Click on the ABL Vision Box - [<>] - to see videos ⚾ ⚾ ⚾ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NBC WKND Series 4 Results [<>] | NBC WKDY Series 5 Preview [<>] ABC WKND Series 4 Results [<>] | ABC WKDY Series 5 Preview [<>] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pittsburgh Express (9-17) vs. St. Louis Stallions (14-12)... The Express have had a rough season, sitting 6 games behind in the ABC East with a .346 win percentage. They’ve struggled both at home and on the road, and their -35 run differential shows their struggles on both sides of the ball. The Stallions are tied for the lead in the ABC Central and have a solid +25 run differential. They’ve been competitive at home and on the road, though their 2-4 record in one-run games is a concern. St. Louis should control this series, but Pittsburgh will be eager to break their losing streak and play spoiler to a division leader. New York Aces (15-11) vs. Las Vegas Gamblers (21-5)... The Aces are 1 game ahead in the ABC East but have struggled in close games (1-4 in one-run games). They’ll need to find a way to stop Las Vegas’s momentum if they want to avoid losing ground in the division. The Gamblers are the top team in the league, with a .808 win percentage and a +57 run differential. They’re riding a 9-game winning streak and are nearly unbeatable at home (14-2). Las Vegas is heavily favored, given their dominant form, but New York could push them in a few games if they improve in close-game situations. Houston Mavericks (10-16) vs. Seattle Comets (12-14)... The Mavericks are having a tough season, sitting 4 games behind in the ABC Central with a -43 run differential. They’ve struggled both at home (7-9) and on the road (3-7), and they’ve lost 7 of their last 10 games. The Comets are 9 games behind Las Vegas in the ABC West, with a .462 win percentage and a -29 run differential. They’ve been mediocre both at home (6-7) and on the road (6-7), and they are currently on a 3-game losing streak. This is another matchup between struggling teams. Seattle’s slight edge in consistency at home could give them the advantage, but both teams are looking for a win to break out of their recent slumps. Philadelphia Fury (13-13) vs. Nashville Blues (14-12)... The Blues are tied for the lead in the ABC Central and have been strong offensively, with a +20 run differential. Their recent form (6-4 in their last 10 games) gives them momentum heading into this series. The Fury sit in third place in the ABC East, 2 games behind the division leaders. They’ve performed better on the road (9-8) and are coming off a win, making this an intriguing matchup as they look to gain ground in their division. This series could go either way, as both teams are fighting for position in their respective divisions. Nashville’s recent momentum could give them an advantage, but Philadelphia’s strong road performance makes them a tough opponent. Boston Patriots (14-12) vs. Denver Rocketeers (13-13)... The Patriots are just 1 game behind New York in the ABC East and are playing well, especially at home (10-4). However, their road form has been weak (4-8), which could be an issue in this series. Denver sits 8 games behind Las Vegas in the ABC West and has a -3 run differential. They’ve been inconsistent, especially in close games, and will be looking to improve at home (8-6) to stay competitive. Boston is slightly favored but will need to improve its road performance to take this series from Denver, who is looking to bounce back from a recent loss. Cincinnati Cougars (13-13) vs. Portland Lumberjacks (8-18)... The Cougars are just 1 game behind in the ABC Central. They’ve been solid at home (10-4) but have struggled on the road (3-9). Their +19 run differential shows a capable offense, but they’ve been inconsistent in close games. The Lumberjacks are having a nightmare season with a .308 win percentage and a league-worst -54 run differential. They’ve been poor both at home (4-5) and on the road (4-13), though they did manage to snap a long losing streak with a win in their last game. Cincinnati is heavily favored in this series, especially given Portland’s struggles. The Cougars will look to take advantage of the Lumberjacks’ poor form and boost their standing in the division. Minneapolis Blizzard (9-17) vs. Tampa Bay Storm (10-16)... The Blizzard are last in the NBC Central and have had a rough season with a .346 win percentage. They’ve struggled mightily on the road (1-12) but have been better at home (8-5). Their -16 run differential indicates a struggling offense and pitching staff. The Storm are also struggling, sitting 9 games behind Charlotte in the NBC East. They have a -23 run differential and have been particularly poor at home (2-11), but they’ve played better on the road (8-5). They’ve lost 6 of their last 10 games. This series is a matchup of two struggling teams, but with Tampa Bay’s better road record and recent performances, they may have the edge. Minneapolis will be looking to capitalize on home-field advantage to get back on track. Charlotte Colonels (19-7) vs. Phoenix Firebirds (12-14)... The Colonels remain the dominant force in the NBC East, with a .731 win percentage and a stellar +50 run differential. They are in the middle of a 4-game winning streak and look solid both at home and away. Phoenix is 3rd in the NBC West and has struggled with consistency, sitting 3 games behind the division leader. Despite being at home, their -19 run differential suggests a tougher series for them against the powerful Colonels. Charlotte is the heavy favorite, but Phoenix will need to defend home field and find a way to slow down the Colonels' offense. Dallas Rustlers (16-10) vs. San Francisco Warriors (15-11)... Tied for the lead in the NBC Central, the Rustlers have been potent offensively with 156 runs scored, though they’ve been average away from home. Their key will be maintaining this offensive output against San Francisco. The Warriors lead the NBC West by a slim margin. They’ve been reliable both at home and on the road, and their +27 run differential shows their capability to compete in high-scoring games. This is a critical series in the NBC, with both teams fighting for division supremacy. Expect a close contest, with Dallas’s offense facing a stiff test from San Francisco’s balanced team. Miami Hurricanes (13-13) vs. Detroit Dukes (16-10)... The Hurricanes are sitting at .500 and are 6 games behind Charlotte in the NBC East. They’ve had a tough time generating offense consistently, with a -21 run differential, and their road record (8-9) suggests they struggle away from home. The Dukes are tied for first in the NBC Central with Dallas. They’ve been strong at home (6-3) and have a +18 run differential, showing a balanced team. Detroit has been inconsistent recently (5-5 in their last 10), but they’ll look to maintain their position atop the division. Detroit is the favorite here, especially with their home advantage. Miami will need a big effort on both sides of the ball to compete against the division leaders. Los Angeles Cobras (14-12) vs. Atlanta Kings (7-19)... The Cobras are just 1 game behind in the NBC West, and their impressive road record (8-4) will be a major asset. They’re looking to bounce back from recent inconsistency, as they’ve lost 6 of their last 10. The Kings are at the bottom of the NBC East, with a .269 win percentage and a -35 run differential. They’ve struggled mightily on the road (3-9) and are riding a 2-game losing streak. Los Angeles is the clear favorite in this series, especially with Atlanta’s poor form. The Cobras should be able to capitalize on the Kings’ struggles. Chicago Fire (15-11) vs. San Diego Seraphs (10-16)... The Fire are just 1 game behind the NBC Central lead and have been dominant at home (11-3). Their +14 run differential shows their ability to outscore opponents, though their road record is a concern (4-8). The Seraphs sit 5 games behind in the NBC West and have struggled both at home and on the road. Their -24 run differential suggests they’re vulnerable, but they’ve played better recently, going 5-5 in their last 10 games. Chicago is favored, especially if they can manage their road woes. San Diego, though, will look to defend their home turf and continue their recent improvement. Real. NBC – WKDY Series 5 Results – May 4 – 7, 1981
Watch it on... ABL Vision: Newsreel - "Welcome to the real [ABL] world!" Miami Hurricanes (16-13) @ Detroit Dukes (16-13) Miami Sweeps Series 3-0 Hurricanes complete the sweep as pitching shines through. Here's the skinny: The Miami Hurricanes swept the Detroit Dukes in a three-game series, showcasing timely hitting and solid pitching performances. In Game 1, Miami secured a 7-5 victory behind Chris Stella's eight-inning effort, with Pete Rick's grand slam in the seventh inning proving decisive. Miami followed up with a 1-0 extra-innings win in Game 2, as Gil Aguilar pitched masterfully, and a defensive error in the 12th inning by third baseman Roberto Rodriguez, allowed the Hurricanes to edge out Detroit. The series concluded with a 4-2 win in Game 3, where Bill Borden's strong pitching and Eric Behan's second save of the series helped Miami hold off a late Detroit rally. The Hurricanes improved to 16-13 after the sweep, while Detroit fell to the same 16-13 tally. GAME 1 - Hurricanes Deal Dukes 7-5 Defeat Miami right-hander Chris Stella pitched his team to victory over the Detroit Dukes at Dukes Field. The final score was 7-5. Stella picked up the win for Miami, going 8 innings. He gave up 4 runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 2-4. Eric Behan closed the door for Miami, picking up his 5th save of the year. Pete Rick came through with a big-time hit for Miami. The center fielder smacked a grand slam home run in the top of the seventh inning to give his team the lead, 4-3. It was his only hit, but it was clutch. "Winning the game is always the first objective," Rick said. The win puts Miami at 14-13. GAME 2 - Hurricanes Clip Dukes, 1-0 Gil Aguilar never let Detroit get something going. The Miami right-hander commanded his slider in pitching the Hurricanes to a 1-0 win. The win went to Luis Maya in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Jordan Allison took the loss. Detroit falls to 16-12. A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the 12th, with the game tied, Dave Trujillo was at the plate when Miami scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Hurricanes to go in front, 1-0. "I thought we played some darn good baseball," said Hurricanes manager Seth Coe. GAME 3 - Miami Beats Detroit, 4-2 The Miami Hurricanes picked up a win at Dukes Field, knocking off the Detroit Dukes, 4-2. On the mound for Miami was right-hander Bill Borden. He played a key role in the triumph. Eric Behan closed out the game, earning his 6th save. The win puts Miami at 16-13. The Hurricanes had to work out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth. The score was 4-2, Miami, with no one out. Detroit, with the bases empty, was mounting a threat. Armando Garcia dug in at the plate, but on a 2-2 changeup, he grounded out. Tampa Bay Storm (12-17) @ Minneapolis Blizzard (10-19) Storm Wins Series 2-1 Tampa Bay fails to complete sweep. Here's the skinny: The Tampa Bay Storm took two out of three games in their series against the struggling Minneapolis Blizzard. In Game 1, Tampa Bay edged out a 5-4 win, thanks to Preston Strate's key contributions and Frank Jimenez's go-ahead single in the eighth inning. Game 2 saw a dominant performance from Tampa Bay's Luis Carrera, who pitched 8.1 shutout innings to lead the Storm to a 5-0 victory. However, Minneapolis bounced back in Game 3, winning 4-3 behind David Bain's strong 7.2-inning effort and Edwin Rivera's timely RBI single in the seventh inning. The series left Tampa Bay at 12-17, while Minneapolis continues to struggle at 10-19. GAME 1 - Storm Snatch Late-Game, 5-4 Win Preston Strate was a major factor in the 5-4 Tampa Bay win over Minneapolis. The Storm first baseman was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. The save went to Antonio Barbieri, number 2 for him. The Blizzard, now 9-18, continue their slow start. Had Frank Jimenez not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Jimenez hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Storm. Tampa Bay manager Mike Khoury said his team played a "no nonsense" game. GAME 2 - Carrera Now 1-2 Following 5-0 Win The Tampa Bay Storm picked up a win at Minneapolis Grounds, taking down the Minneapolis Blizzard, 5-0. Starting pitcher Luis Carrera was a big reason why. The loss has the Blizzard at 9-19. Carrera's performance can only be described as masterful. He notched 3 strikeouts in 8.1 innings while allowing 3 hits. Carrera, who is the top prospect in the Storm organization, goes to 1-2 on the year with 11 strikeouts. "I went out and just tried to do my job," said Carrera. GAME 3 - Storm Suffer 4-3 Road Loss The Minneapolis Blizzard picked up a win at Minneapolis Grounds, knocking off the Tampa Bay Storm, 4-3. Starting pitcher David Bain was a big reason why. Bain, now 5-2, was the winner. In 7.2 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 4, walking 2, and allowing 2 runs. The Storm drop to 12-17, as their stumbling start to the 1981 season continues. Minneapolis right fielder Edwin Rivera contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With two down, he hit a fastball to left field for a run-scoring single. It was his 27th hit of the season and put the Blizzard ahead, 4-1. "We'll build on this win," said Rivera. Charlotte Colonels (20-9) @ Phoenix Firebirds (14-15) Firebirds Win Series 2-1 Phoenix Starter Kerry Darling seals the series win. Here's the skinny: The Charlotte Colonels and Phoenix Firebirds clashed in a three-game series that saw Phoenix take two out of three games. In Game 1, Charlotte's Dustin Meredith put on a hitting clinic, going 5-for-5 with a home run and an RBI triple, leading the Colonels to a 5-1 victory. However, Phoenix bounced back in Game 2, winning a thrilling 5-4 contest in extra innings, thanks to Justin Clayton's walk-off double in the tenth inning. Phoenix carried that momentum into Game 3, securing a 6-1 win behind Kerry Darling's dominant 8.2-inning performance and Nick Perez's clutch 2-run single in the seventh. Charlotte still boasts a strong 20-9 record despite dropping the last two games, while Phoenix improved to 14-15. GAME 1 - Meredith Blisters Phoenix Getting 5 hits in a game has always been memorable feat in baseball. In the Charlotte's 5-1 win over Phoenix, left fielder Dustin Meredith was red-hot, scorching them for hit after hit at Phoenix Grounds. "To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax," Meredith said afterward. "I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I have to admit, I got a little tight when I realized I had a chance for five. On the last at-bat, I was ready to swing at anything close." Dustin Meredith singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Tony Zacate in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI triple in the 9th. This year, Meredith is hitting at a .310 pace with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs. He has played in 24 games and scored 13 times. GAME 2 - Firebirds Win Thriller, 5-4 The Phoenix Firebirds topped the Charlotte Colonels, 5-4, in National Baseball Conference action at Phoenix Grounds. The game was highlighted by the performance of Phoenix pitcher Nate Lucas. The win has Phoenix at 13-15. The decisive blow was delivered by Justin Clayton in the bottom of the tenth when he hit a run-scoring double off three-time All-Star Edwin Martinez to win the game for Phoenix. The home crowd went nuts. "What's not to like about a win?" said Clayton. GAME 3 - Down to Defeat Goes Charlotte, 6-1 The Phoenix Firebirds picked up a win at Phoenix Grounds, downing the Charlotte Colonels, 6-1. On the mound for Phoenix was right-hander Kerry Darling, who played a pivotal role in the win. Darling yielded 1 run over 8.2 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. His record improves to 2-3. Charlotte, with the loss, is still a robust 20-9. In the bottom of the seventh, Phoenix designated hitter Nick Perez had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and two out, Perez stroked a 2-run single to left. It made the score 3-0, Phoenix. For the game, he went 2 for 5 with 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. "I like to lead by example," said Perez. "I'm glad I could contribute to a good win." Atlanta Kings (9-20) @ Los Angeles Cobras (15-14) Kings Win Series 2-1 Atlanta earns a rare series win on the road over struggling Cobras. Here's the skinny: The Atlanta Kings and Los Angeles Cobras faced off in a three-game series filled with offensive fireworks. In Game 1, Atlanta triumphed 12-7, thanks to a grand slam by Gustavo Navarro in the fifth inning. Despite a strong performance from Los Angeles' D.J. Rivera, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, the Kings secured their 8th win of the season. Los Angeles bounced back in Game 2 with a 6-1 win, led by Jerry Romero's 6.2 innings of 5-hit ball and Alex Zarate's 2-run single in the first inning. However, Atlanta dominated the final game, winning 10-2 as Ivan Juarez silenced the Cobras' bats. Marcos Valverde's run-scoring double in the third inning helped the Kings secure the victory, bringing their record to 9-20. The Cobras barely remain above .500 at 15-14. GAME 1 - Atlanta Gets 12-7 Win The Atlanta Kings besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Los Angeles third baseman D.J. Rivera by beating the Cobras, 12-7, at Cobras Ballpark. Rivera was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Mike Hawkins, the winning pitcher, improved to 3-2. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 2 and walking 4. The Kings with just their 8th win in 27 games, have played uninspired baseball so far. Atlanta used a clutch at-bat from Gustavo Navarro to capture the win. The right fielder hammered a grand slam home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Kings ahead, 5-4. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger. "We took home the win," said Navarro. "What's not to like?" GAME 2 - Cobras Earn 6-1 Home Win The Los Angeles Cobras beat the Atlanta Kings, 6-1, at Cobras Ballpark. Starting pitcher Jerry Romero was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. The winner was Romero. He threw 6.2 innings of 5-hit ball. The loser was Bill Ybanez. The win has Los Angeles at 15-13. Alex Zarate helped his team take an early lead with a 2-run single. It came in the first inning, making the score 4-0, Cobras. "I was able to fill up the zone," said Romero. GAME 3 - Kings Win at Los Angeles, 10-2 Atlanta starter Ivan Juarez ran into little resistance from Los Angeles hitters, as his team cruised to victory, 10-2. The victory makes Atlanta 9-20. Marcos Valverde had a big run-scoring double for the Kings in the top of the third inning. With Atlanta leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he got a splitter from Joel Valenty, who is tied for 5th in the NBC in innings pitched with 48.2, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 7th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Kings ahead, 2-0. Los Angeles manager Dave Walkling summed up his team's performance in one word: "Pathetic." Chicago Fire (16-13) @ San Diego Seraphs (12-17) San Diego Wins Series 2-1 Elijah Griffith the hero as Seraphs take series. Here's the skinny: The San Diego Seraphs and Chicago Fire battled through a thrilling three-game series at Seraphs Field, with the Seraphs taking two of the three games. In Game 1, San Diego edged Chicago 10-9, thanks to Elijah Griffith's clutch run-scoring double in the eighth inning, part of his 2-for-3 performance. The Fire responded in Game 2 with a 6-3 win, as starter Heriberto Jimenez pitched eight solid innings and Miguel Martinez drove in three runs, including a crucial hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning. San Diego closed out the series with an 8-4 win in Game 3, led by Griffith's two home runs and four RBIs. Brandon Barclay also contributed with a key sacrifice fly as San Diego improved their record to 12-17, while Chicago dropped to 16-13 after the tough series. GAME 1 - Seraphs Win at Home, 10-9 The San Diego Seraphs beat the Chicago Fire, 10-9, at Seraphs Field. Elijah Griffith, in particular, was impressive. He went 2-3 with a double and 2 walks, while scoring 2 times. San Diego reliever Rich Curtis picked up the win, raising his record to 2-0. Andrew Flugence was tagged with the loss. Victor Hernandez closed it out for San Diego, earning his 6th save. In the bottom of the eighth, the Seraphs grabbed the lead when Griffith hit his 3rd double of the season. The run-scoring double off Willie Leyba made it 9-8, San Diego. "The name of the game is scoring runs," Griffith said. "We did a good job of that today." The defeat makes Chicago 15-12. GAME 2 - Seraphs Absorb 6-3 Home Loss Chicago and San Diego duked it out and the Fire came out victorious. Chicago starter Heriberto Jimenez pitched well against the San Diego Seraphs at Seraphs Field. The left-hander led his team to a win, 6-3. In 8 innings, Jimenez surrendered 10 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 2. He allowed 3 runs. Matt Hyman earned his 6th save, after closing out the game. Miguel Martinez was 2 for 3 with 2 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 3 runs for Chicago. The former first round draft pick had a key at-bat in the top of the second. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring hit-by-pitch off Arthur Rizzo. It was his 10th RBI of the season. Jimenez called the win "a lesson in teamwork." The win gives Chicago a record of 16-12. GAME 3 - Fire Suffer 8-4 Road Loss The San Diego Seraphs stopped the Chicago Fire, 8-4, at Seraphs Field. The Seraphs got a big game from Elijah Griffith, who slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. San Diego reliever Jerry Wilson picked up the win, upping his record to 1-1. Manny de Jesus was saddled with the loss. Chicago falls to 16-13. Brandon Barclay, who is tied for 3rd in the NBC in stolen bases with 6, helped out the San Diego cause in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. For the game, the center fielder went 1 for 3 with a walk, while scoring 2. "We did more than enough to get the win," said Griffith. Dallas Rustlers (18-11) @ San Francisco Warriors (16-13) Rustlers Win Series 2-1 Warriors stave off sweep with dramatic Game 2 win. Here's the skinny: The Dallas Rustlers took two out of three games in their series against the San Francisco Warriors, continuing their strong start to the season. In Game 1, Dallas cruised to a 9-2 victory behind Jonathan Funches' 7-inning performance and Devon Barlow's 3-run homer in the third inning. San Francisco bounced back in Game 2 with a dramatic 8-7 win in 13 innings, thanks to Dave Barajas' 4-for-6 performance and Ron Hutchinson's walk-off single. However, Dallas sealed the series in Game 3 with a 5-3 win, led by Alejandro Rosado's 3-for-4 day, including a 2-run home run. Dallas improved to 18-11, while San Francisco put up a fight but dropped to 15-14. GAME 1 - Warriors Popped by Rustlers, 9-2 The Dallas Rustlers and starting pitcher Jonathan Funches stifled the San Francisco offense en route to a comfortable 9-2 win at San Francisco Grounds. Funches picked up the win for Dallas, going 7 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 4-1. Dallas goes to 17-10 with the win. Dallas used a clutch at-bat from Devon Barlow to capture the win. The catcher hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Rustlers ahead, 6-1. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger. "Jonathan made some big pitches when he needed to," said Rustlers manager Brian Parsley. GAME 2 - Warriors Rally to Nose Past Dallas The San Francisco Warriors stopped the Dallas Rustlers, 8-7, at San Francisco Grounds. The Warriors got a big game from Dave Barajas, who was 4-6 with a home run, 3 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. The loss puts Dallas at 17-11. The Warriors got a clutch hit from second baseman Ron Hutchinson. In the bottom of the 13th, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Warriors. "This kind of game is tough on the heart," said winning manager Tyler Trowbridge. He lasted 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 3. With the win, he raised his record to 5-0. Vinny Gonzalez collected his 4th save. Dallas took a 5-2 lead on Rosado's 1st home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which he hit off Ryan Harvey in the top of the seventh, propelled Dallas to the win. "Every time I go up there, I try and hit a ball hard," said Rosado. Dallas, now 18-11, has played well in the early going. Real.
