London Monarchs
Overview
Blimey. We were so, so close, yet so far away. I am not sure how our boys managed to survive the month of September without three of our biggest guns in the lineup: Byron Feveryear was gone for the season in late August and Orrin "The Longstop" Perrel (he is a shortstop, you see! Giggle! We British with our sly British humour! We even add an extra vowel to humour because it is so witty!) missed a couple of weeks as well. Oh yes, and Indian Isayu Konda was also sorely missed at the end. Nonetheless, our British determination led us past the hated Germans and into the playoffs, where we just barely got swept by the Parisians. Oh, all right, that is what we like to call dramatic understatement. But we still came within... 8 games of repeating as World Champions. That has to count for something. Retirements ------------- Manager Pedro Gallo. Not an Englishman but he will be missed nonetheless. Code:

The top two guys were among the finest lights in the league and the rest of the rotation was good enough. One minor piece of worrisomeness (we are English and therefore get to create words) is the age of the team. Turvill and Boden are right in their prime but Bradley Weld and Zach Thompson are starting to get a little older than we'd prefer our moundsmen to be. And there's not a lot in the way of youthful men waiting in the wings. The Monarchs had 3 players in the European League top 10 in errors last year - SS Orrin Perrel was 2nd with 45, C Derek Mallam added 40 to tie for 4th, and 3B George Green bobbled 32 spheroids to finish 9th. 2 of those three players are getting on in years but don't have really adequate backups at the position. Madrid Matadors
Overview
The 1920 season was over for the Matadors essentially before it started. We did not feel we had an adequate chance at taking home the European League shield and so at the end of spring training we traded our top two starters, Jesus Galvan and Mario Ramos, to the Mexico City Aztecs for a windmill of prospects. Actually if you look at our team as a whole it wasn't so much the pitching that did the team in as it was the hitting. Granted that the pitching did not help. What we're getting at is that maybe it was a good idea to get some of those hitting prospects. Retirements ------------- SP Marcos Guzman - Had 5 fine starts in September after spending most of the year in reserve but decided to call it a career. Code:

The sons of a family of trapeze artists, these young men have different reasons for turning to baseball. The younger man Martin Morales chose the American sport because it is less strenuous than training his shoulder muscles to hold his entire body while flipping through the air. "One arm is better than two", he told us. His older brother Hector, though, has other ideas. "Hard work? I do not think that word means what he thinks it means." The elder Morales chose to pitch because he wanted to prove to the world the competitive fire of Spaniards. Code:

Mexico City Aztecs
Overview
The Aztecs really jumped off to a good start last year but for some reason, despite picking up a couple of great pitchers from Madrid and engineering a solid midseason trade for an equally great hitter, they slumped at the end of the year, going just 2 games over .500 from the trade deadline forward and getting knocked off in short order by the Chicago Defenders in the postseason. It was the second such early exit for the Aztecs, who are really beginning to feel the sting of raised expectations now. Things won't get any easier this year, what with Mexico City getting lumped in with the Royal Canadians and the 4 other non-USA clubs in a giant Colonial Division. That being said, outside of Canada the new teams are mostly patsies. The Aztecs figure to blaze past them the way Pancho Villa blazed past Pershing. Retirements ------------- 3B Gilberto Lopez - a decent backup in '19 but wasn't in the picture last year. C Eduardo Gonzalez - Very good hitting backup catcher in the first year of the league but the victim of numbers in '20. SP Edgar Uribe - Sound like a broken record? This man didn't pitch at all in 1920 following 15 league-average starts the season before. SP Juan Jaramillo - In an alternate universe when the Aztecs didn't pick up two of the best pitchers of the EU for 1920, this man might have made a difference. Code:

There were years where the entire league had a sub-3.00 ERA. Given that, it's still quite an accomplishment for a League of Nations team to reach a mark like this. After all, what did Mexico know of baseball before 1919? Granted, it helped to bring over Jesus Galvan and Mario Ramos, but the other half of the rotation, Jose Gonzales of Acapulco and Manuel Figueroa of Tlaxcala, were no slouches. 25 year old Julio Leon of the hometown Mexico City even wrapped up many of the Aztecs' victories. Well, of course not. It was still very, very good though, especially after Edgar Diaz came aboard from the Chicago Defenders. So strange that that club would pull such a "white flag" trade and then go on to defeat our men in the postseason. Baseball is a crazy game. For the most part, the lineup's pretty set going into '21. We're not fond of Mariano Colon at first base but there are many, many people who could theoretically fill that spot. Code:

Moscow Proletariat
Overview
The Glorious Revolution has to start somewhere. The depths that this baseball team has reached is not due to the inadequacies of Communism - nyet! In fact, just implying that it might got the writer of that last sentence "re-educated". Nyet, this team is bad because of the legacy of capitalism and Czarism. However, the capitalist pig-dogs will not prevail! Just wait and the proletariat will prove not just the equal of the rest of you but the better! Our strong Soviet backs will lift us to the top! Retirements ------------- 1B Iokim Partasov - A rock of the team in 1919 but slipped in 1920 and "elected" to ply his trade in Siberia instead. Code:

As you can see, it worked unbelievably well. Even though the top pitcher finished just 47th in the league in innings pitched, the team was still more or less league average in terms of pitching quality. That is called the wave of communism. And as our men get better and better, we will crush our opponents behind the monstrous strength of collectivist philosophies and such. Code:

Oh, sure, it didn't accomplish as much in terms of old-fashioned capitalist metrics such as "runs scored" or "batting average", but it did its thing while having only two men achiee more than 500 at-bats. Just as we Proletariat share the wealth, so do we share the load. This means that when a man like Ioakim Partasov (now "retired" to Siberia) falters, there are 3 or 4 men to rise up and take his place. And they will do that while singing the new hymns that have been written for our man Vladimir Lenin. Huzzah, Lenin! Huzzah, workers! Code:

New York Giants
Overview
How far can you go in the League of Nations with power and front-line pitching? Pretty far, probably, but the Giants aren't quite in the position to test that idea. They did lead the AA in hitting, but have yet to unleash the awesome power of the home run that they've been telling everyone about. They plan on moving back into their old haunts, the Polo Grounds, next year, and that ought to add a bit to their homerun totals. Otherwise, a rough September is what stood between them and 90 victories. Retirements ------------- None Code:

How David McClendon did not implode with a 1:4 K/W ratio and 17 homeruns allowed (3rd in the AA) is beyond even us. And we know baseball because we are Giants fans. Geraldo Alvarado managed an even worse ratio than McClendon, although in fairness he did kind of implode. Steve "Two Armed" Daly was the ace of the staff and Jim Jones should be better in a full season (he came in in a midseason deal with the US Army and missed the last month and a half with bone chips in his elbow). Also, Juan Lozano figures to only improve upon an up and down campaign. Code:

That means adaptable. And adaptable means they'll keep on hitting until the cows come home. And since cows do not, as a general thing, live in New York City, that could be a long, long time. The core of the lineup - C Mike Bryan, 2B Duane Bunch, 3B John Baird, CF Terry "Slacker" Schroeder, and RF Stephen Everett are all well under 30. If they can just coax some more good performances from their moundsmen, the sky is the limit for these boys. Code:

Paris Revolutions
Overview
Following our extravagant first League of Nations title, all we have to say is... uohohohho! Uohohohoho! And also, uohohohohoho! Perhaps even we were doubtful after a below .500 June left our club at 41 wins against 38 losses. But as we say about le Tour de France, it is not something that can be won in a single day. From July 1 on, we lapped the tired riders of the European League to the tune of a 66-26 mark including the playoffs. Jean-Pascal Dumoulin, Moise Gros, Sebastien Guilbert, Didier Bernard, and Herve Fischer all received MVP votes, but of course you cannot combine them all into one the way that Austria could combine all their love for their only good player Viet Aehrenthal. Rio de Janeiro
Overview
Yes, the Rio de Janeiro Carnival was a carnival for everyone involved! Especially opposing hitting! We wanted to give the fans a real taste of Brazilian action! in our first year and the team did not let us down! Not one bit! Excitement first, then winning! Retirements ------------- 1B Salome Rmus - Did not play and had too few vowels to compete at a major league level anyway. RF Thomas Soares - Also didn't play. Code:

We are so excited about everything that we can only speak with exclamation points! And then sometimes we have to put extra exclamation! points in the middle! of sentences! We do not know how Heliodoro Meredith could lose 22 games and Adolfo Regalo just miss winning 20 with otherwise similar records but it sure is exciting! to think about! Code:

Like the "samba" music that we love! Some of the boys were less exciting(!) but we kept shuffling people out in an exciting! manner until we found the proper breakdown of exciting! Exciting! Code:

Rome Cardinals
Overview
Buongiorno! The team of il Pappa took a molto piccolo step backwards last year. It was primarily that poor month of May that did this team in, but in truth they were never that competitive in the first place. Our sunny nature forces us to admit, however, that the Cardinali did set a team record for victories in 1920! Moving into an East/West formation will probably help, especially if Italia is placed in the East with London and Paris in the West. What our men did do, they did with slap hitting and not enough speed. That will have to change. Retirements ------------- None Code:

Fortunately, Alrigo Mascolo was there to take up much of the slack. The rest of the rotation was mostly average, though we rue the day we allowed Daniele Capeci on a pitcher's mound. All we can say is this: he won 17 games for us the year before. No, we are serious about that. Code:

We appreciate his backstop prowess and are quite fond of his last name, but Karl? It sounds like one of his parents came from Northern Italy. Far Northern. Elsewhere, we feel molto bene about the situation in left field: watching him zip around the bases like a fast Italian steed makes us forget the way he sometimes wanders aimlessly on defense. At first, Leonard Cosini came 1 home run, 6 RBIs, and 8 walks from having a very remarkable looking year. Code:

Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists
Overview
That didn't end the way we'd planned it. The Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists led the A/A for much of the summer but a 21-29 record after August 7 killed their playoff hopes. Injuries are what did the deal. Canada lost half its rotation, its closer, and half of its starting infield within mere weeks. You can win with all that but it's pretty hard. Ah well. Just missing out in 1920 will make '21 that much sweeter when we win the pennant. Retirements ------------- None Code:

This gamble only pushed them further away from contention, although in a sense even some losing efforts out of their top men was better than using, say, Bernard Thivierge for an extra few starts. Maxandre "Grizzly Man" Lavoie still ended up the A/A Big Six award winner, so it wasn't all bad. And really, outside of Lavoie himself the staff was very, very young. Code:

Losing 3B Michel Briand and 1B Tim Kinch for a good chunk of the season allowed the team to try Irish import MacKillan Dwywy at both slots for extended time. Third base is supposed to be his natural position but he was an absolute disaster (17 errors, a .866 fielding average in 35 starts there), and the team wants to have both him and Kinch in the lineup so it's looking like left field will be his spot in 1921. Having all three players in the lineup full-time and bringing back stud keystone man Jon Simon will really help next year. Code:

Overview
We admit that we just don't understand this game of base ball that well. The object is to put the little ball into the glove, right? And that gets you points? We think we probably did pretty well, though. Our opponents seemed happy enough to face us. And we liked to run around a lot. That was fun. Retirements ------------- SP Wei-Guo Chen. 11-8 last year and a key piece of the Dragons machine. So long, Mister Chen. Code:

Sydney Outback
Overview
The first year was very first yearish for our Outback. We still aren't quite sure how we avoided 100 losses last year. We can't call it luck because if luck was a factor at all... well, look at the runs given up. We're pretty sure quadruple digits is bad. It is, right? The good news about the bad pitching is that it took a lot of the heat off of the offense, which wasn't very good either but nobody noticed that. Also, we were able to send some of our best guys off to Canada and London where they were able to experience World Championship contention experience. Once they retire they'll no doubt come home to Australia and tell us all about it. Retirements ------------- None Code:

Patrick Harwood was good, at least, and Alex Scoley, who we received from the English in a trade, will probably be pretty decent. Beyond that, picking and choosing who will give up 10 runs in the next game is fun! Code:

One big part of why the hitting was bad rather than mediocre was the whole shipping off of our stars to other teams thing. It's kind of like a lend-lease action only we don't get the players back. Then they give us their not very good or else young guys in return. Sounds fair! It also gave us a lot of time to try guys like Scott Eager. He wasn't very good, but we tried him! Did you know that he's not even old enough to drink in the United States? Actually that's not true anymore because he just turned 21. But it's interesting! Code:

Tokyo Rising Sun
Overview
The Empire of the Rising Sun had an improved season last year and will, with just a little wah, will compete with Mexico and Canada in the Pioneer Division next year. All improvements that need to be made are on the offensive side of the game. Any problems with the defense were with the men who were actually in the field, not on the mound. Okay, the mound is in the field. Quiet. Retirements ------------- None Code:

They didn't have a lot to show for it due in part to the Tokyo "divine whirlwind" strategy of using as many pitchers as they could so that each member could pitch to utter exhaustion, but the quality was there. Pay particular attention to Tatsu Ki****a, who would have been a Rookie of the Year candidate if it wasn't for that expansion. Come to think of it, Shinsaku Iwasaki was pretty good too. Code:

This problem is, shall we say, enhanced by the poor fielding. We would add Moto Mori****a to the list but even though he hit .321 he also allowed more men to steal bases on him than anyone in the league save the clown the New York Giants are using at the position. Granted, he was 2nd in baseball in baserunners killed but that's a small consolation for a man who was 3rd from the bottom of the list in runner thrown out percentage. Oh, who needs stats anyway? We believe that the only way out of this is through lots and lots of drilling. Repetition will lead to more baseballs being hit as well as more baseballs being caught. We are sure of it. Code:

US Army Baseball Engineers
Overview
It wasn't that bad of a year, really. In times of peace, the US Army Corps of Baseball Engineers is perfectly content to allow the other American teams to bask in the limelight of winning records and not losing. We are more than happy to learn from Cincinnati, New York, and to some extent Chicago (not literally, since the Army still does not allow African Americans in its front line ranks, and we strongly consider the USACoBE to be on the front lines!) and even send some of our better men out on "furlough" so that they might infect the whole country with their fighting spirit. Given this, we think it highly encouraging to have finished ahead of anybody at all, even if the two teams worse than use were brand new. Retirements ------------- None Code:

Vienna Musik
Overview
If only we could have tossed out half a year... following the loss to Berlin on June 30, we were 17-32 and headed for dead last thanks in large part to the onerous reparations levied upon us by the so-called Allies. However, we were able to throw off the shackles of domination the rest of the way and came surprisingly close to evening up our record by the end of the year. Our general tactic was to drop easy ones against the good teams, thus lulling the league into a state of unconsciousness, then beating up on the bad clubs in the league. This year, we're going to try and concentrate our losingness on our real allies, the Germans; maybe a couple extra wins from us will prove the difference. Retirements ------------- MR Max Plischke - A major player in 1919, he fell victim to the youth movement in 1920, playing in just 8 games and 15.1 innings. Code:

The Musik featured 3 pitchers in the top 25 in innings pitched, quite a large number for a rebuilding team if you ask us. Maybe the "re" should be lopped off as that implies there is some element in the past to build to. One guy who we did not include in our "basic four" was Simon Stangassinger, who has one of the best names in the league. Say it out loud. Stangassinger. Stangassinger. It just sounds like a fastball or perhaps a bratwust sizzling past you. A bratwurst that sizzles "past" you isn't maybe the kind of bratwurst you might enjoy but you get the drift. Code:

The entire outfield was speedy and good: all three starters bad at least 35 steals, and snagged stray fly balls with aplomb. The great news about the rest of the team is that they were so bad they should be easily replaceable. Code:

Season Preview
There are a lot of changes in store for 1921, and to help us sort out the effect of these changes we've brought in a group of experts. From the New York Giants, manager Joe Sanchez. Joe Sanchez: I intend to impart the proper amount of grit to this discussion. And hustle. Hustle's important. From the Moscow Proletariat, rookie manager Orel Woitenkoff. Orel Woitenkoff: We will bury you. Sorry, I was not talking to you, Comrade Reporter. I was talking to the American. From the London Monarchs, first year manager Max Bates. Max Bates: I don't really know this baseball thing so well, guys. I'm just a haberdasher. What am I doing here? And finally, from the Paris Revolution, manager Katsuyuki Sato. Katsuyuki Sato: I come from eastern France. Far eastern. Thanks, guys. First of all, let's talk about the new lineup. For the first time in history, baseball has aligned itself into separate divisions within the larger leagues. We hope that this will heighten local rivalries and increase competitiveness overall. Joe Sanchez: Also, this ensures two American teams will be in the playoffs. As one of those teams, I like those odds. Orel Woitenkoff: Typical capitalist pig-dog rhetoric. Joe Sanchez: I don't like you. Enough, men. Let's take a quick look at the divisions. American/Asian League American Division ----------------- Chicago Defenders Cincinnati Reds New York Giants US Baseball Engineers Katsuyuki Sato: Look at that! That's patently unfair. Joe Sanchez: What are you talking about? The best team in the American Association is in there. Just because there are only four teams doesn't mean that it's going to be easy. Max Bates: I once sold a hat to a man in New York! Katsuyuki Sato: That's not the point and you know it. You're going to have 2 teams from your division going to the playoffs, whereas the only way my division gets 2 teams is if we have better records than your division? Max Bates: Wait, aren't you from France? Katsuyuki Sato: Oh yeah. I mean "their". Ha! Why did I say "our"? I am from France, after all! France France France! Moving on... Pioneer Division ---------------- Mexico City Aztecs Rio de Janeiro Carnival Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists Shanghai Dragons Sydney Outback Tokyo Rising Sun Joe Sanchez: See? You've got both of the expansion teams in there. It's not so bad. Katsuyuki Sato: Yeah, and Mexico City and the Canadians, both countries, last time I checked, that are right next to the United States. Joe Sanchez: Yes, but not *in* America. You foreigners just don't get it, do you? Baseball is an American sport and there needs to be an American division. That's the way it is. Max Bates: Hey, pardon me for asking, but aren't your eyes a little squinty for a Frenchman? Katsuyuki Sato: Those are called epicanthic folds, you idiot! Max Bates: Blimey, mate! I thought I asked for no insults. Orel Woitenkoff: I think I agree with Japanese man. Katsuyuki Sato: Thanks... hey! Orel Woitenkoff: That is unfair divisional setup that favors the pig-dogs. And also, Englishman is idiot. Thanks for the insight. Moving on... European League West ----------------------- Amsterdam Admirals Brussels Painters London Monarchs Madrid Matadors Paris Revolutions Orel Woitenkoff: This is good division. All good teams put together so that Mother Russia can field only okay team and still maybe win division. Max Bates: I like it, too. Those are basically all the good places to visit in Europe. Well, except Florence. And there isn't a team in Florence. Katsuyuki Sato: You're still an idiot. If you're in the same division as us, that means you have to try harder to get into the playoffs. Max Bates: Oh yeah, well... your head is small for your body size. And the final division: European League East -------------------- Athens Philosophers Berlin Teutonic Knights Moscow Proletariat Rome Cardinals Vienna Musik Katsuyuki Sato: This looks like the "Germany automatically wins" division to me. Joe Sanchez: Yeah, people who don't know baseball all that well would probably think that. People who do understand baseball, on the other hand, can recognize the inherent clutch abilities of the Italian and Austrian races and understand that no matter how much better the Germans are on a talent basis than everyone else, they will find a way to lose. Max Bates: I agree with Joe on the basis that he hasn't insulted me yet. Orel Woitenkoff: We will find way to take care of Germans. I would not worry about that. As Mr. Sato so kindly pointed out, the playoffs are being expanded as well. The European side of things is easy enough to figure out: the division winners automatically make it as well as the players with the 2 next best records. There will be an extra round to take care of this, which will be 5 games in length. On the A/A side of things, there will be one "wild card" just as there is in Europe but the final playoff squad will by the 2nd place team in the American division. Katsuyuki Sato: An American division team could lose 100 games and make it if the other 2 teams lose more than 100. How fair is that? Joe Sanchez: That won't happen. New York and Cincinnati both have too much grit on their roster and in their hearts to not win it all. Katsuyuki Sato: Grit? What is this grit you are talking about? Joe Sanchez: Moderator, do you see what I'm saying? These non-Americans simply don't understand what baseball is. Meanwhile we have a starting third baseman who is not even six feet tall. That is called clutch, my friends. Katsuyuki Sato: I don't even know how to answer that. Orel Woitenkoff: What is clutch? There is no clutch. Max Bates: I think that's something you get in a car. Don't look at me. I'm just the hired help. Finally, the last thing we wanted to speak about is the addition of a brand new midseason exhibition called the All-Star Game. Each league picks their best players and they duke it out for nine innings. This looks to be an innocent, fun way of letting the fans see the stars of both leagues. Joe Sanchez: This is a terrible idea. You know what would be a good idea? An All-Clutch game with the clutchiest players in the game. You wouldn't even have to play the World's Series because that would pretty much be a foregone conclusion. An All-*Star* game, though? That just muddies the picture. Max Bates: I want to see the stars! It will be ever so much fun! Katsuyuki Sato: This is going to be great. I so want to see my friends from the Rising Sun. My eyes are welling up just thinking about it. Max Bates: Wait a minute! I get it! You're Japanese! You're just managing the French because they paid you a lot of money! Katsuyuki Sato: Did I mention that you are an idiot? I can't remember anything after that last sentence of yours. It pushed everything smart out of my head the way a sumo wrestler pushes all the other patrons out of a sushi bar when he needs some delicious puffer fish. Anyway, you are an idiot. Well, folks, that's a wrap! I hope you understand this league just a little better now!

So far, the following men have learned that their season is over: Fat Freddie Turvill, SP, London Enrico Ramirez, LF, Madrid Alfonso Carbajal, RF, Madrid 'Don Quixote' Mario Ramos, SP, Mexico City Frederic Deveaux, MR, Paris Sisto Greenough, MR, Rio de Janeiro Niculao Unho, MR, Rio de Janeiro Bob Maitland, SP, Royal Canadian Qian-gui "Kung Fu" Han, SP, Shanghai Edmund Woodward, MR, US Army Paris has been especially hit by the injury bug: at present, half its lineup is on the disabled list (1B Jean Pascal Dumoulin, SS Didier Bouchard, CF Herve Fischer, RF Didier Bernard). These setbacks don't appear to be doing a lot to their play on the field, though. London, on the other hand, has not been playing up to snuff at all. Part of that is their own injury struggles; in addition to #2 starter Turvill, they've also been without the use of Byron Feveryear for a good chunk of the proceedings thus far. Of course, Feveryear is one of those gritty ballplayers who spends almost as much time on the bench tending to his on-field injuries as he spends in the field putting his body on the line, so his absence can hardly be blamed for any downfall. In fact, the Monarchs lead the EU in hitting with a .312 mark. Their pitching isn't even that bad. It's just ponderous. One team playing down to expectations is the US Army Baseball Engineers, who have taken a "scorched earth" policy to their own team. One wonders how much worse New York and Cincinnati would be if they didn't have what is essentially a farm team giving up their top players in addition for refuse. Then again, this is the country hit by the tragedy of the Baseball Brigade; in some ways, they can do whatever they want. State of the League: Offense Reigns Just over 10% into the season, one thing is very clear: we're going to be seeing a lot more runs scored this year. League of Nations batting hovers around the .290 mark, with the European League sitting just below .300 at .298. Home runs are also up, although not as spectacularly; last year teams hit an average of about 45 per team whereas this year it's looking like they might hit 55. It's hard to pinpoint a reason as to the sudden rise in offense. There's a general warming trend going on throughout the world. More than anything else, though, we think this is a sign of the world putting its mark on the American pastime.

Events: May 1-15, 1921
May 1: Warren G. Harding is sworn in as President of the United States and General Manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
May 1: Germany asks for reparations to be delayed or canceled and is denied forcefully. So forcefully, in fact, that the reparations extend to baseball. London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Moscow are all allowed to take a player from the Teutonic Knights in that order. The mini-draft goes as follows: London: SP Verner Schumann Paris: CF Nisin Kirsch Amsterdam: LF Kristian "Aurochs" Eckhardt Brussels: SP Dustin Meise Moscow: 3B Eustace Winschermann May 7: The Russian White Army captures Mongolia from China, taking 2 Chinese ballplayers in the process. The players involved are a reserve pitcher and SP Luo-Han Thum (2-1, 4.33 ERA). May 9: The Peace of Riga ends the Polish-Soviet War and frees all suspended Moscovian players to play once more.

The uberstar isn't chasing .400 like some of the other men in the game but he is hitting a more than respectable .353 with 7 homeruns (2nd in the Euro) and 17 steals (also 2nd). 1B Mjalko Panic, a 31 year old rookie, also adds 7 HRs to the attack and CF Veit Schusetka gives them 3 men in the top 8 (he has 5 dingers). On the other side of the ledger, Florian Knaus is the odds-on favorite to be the first Euro All-Star Game starter. Going into the year, he was just 31-41 but he has yet to lose in 10 starts and 9 decisions. His earned run average of 1.65 also leads the league. Ludwig Senner has a similar rags-to-riches story, going from 30-29 in his career to 6-3 this year with a 2.81 ERA (3rd in the league). The Royal Canadians' story is not quite as balanced as that of the Musik. It's about how great hitting can totally pummel a league if the hitters can stay healthy. So far the Mounted Baseballists have scored 322 runs in 46 games. That's almost 7 per game! 1B Tim Kinch, who has fought back and neck injuries since the LoN began, is having the kind of year where a .403 May batting average counts as a slump. He's at .428 overall this year. Thanks in part to his timely hitting, leadoff hitting RF Ron Nock has scored 53 runs already this year. That's on pace for 204! It would not be a complete surprise if the 1921 A/A All-Star lineup consisted entirely of Canadians. Players of the Month Announced Florian Knaus was, as expected, named the May Pitcher of the Month for the European League. Yes, it's unlikely that he'll finish the season with the 32 wins he's on pace to reaching, but it's still an amazing start. His A/A counterpart is Mexico City's Carlos Diaz. Diaz is an interesting story. In 1919 he went 18-8 for the Aztecs but 1920 saw the Madrid Matadors more or less give their best two starters up to the "other" North American team. Somebody had to be the odd man out. Diaz played in just 10 games, compiling a 4-4 record as the 5th starter in a 4-man rotation. This year, Mario Ramos (16-11, 2.68 ERA) suffered a bad elbow injury in his first start and forced the Aztecs to recall Diaz from the reserve list. He's really shown up for this team, going 7-3 on the year including 6-1 in May. Because there are no expansion teams this year, the Rookie of the Month honors are being awarded to actual rookies this season for the first time. The A/A winner was 3B Masaharu Sato. Just 22 years of age, he captured the May ROY award by hitting .403 with 8 runs scored in 67 at-bats. The European League also rewarded a young third sacker, Demetrius Martis of the Athens Philosophers. Demetrius gave hope to thousands of Greek baseball fans with his own .402 average for the month with 24 RBIs and 26 runs. He doesn't turn 21 until next April and could join the pantheon on Mount Olympus by the end of his career. Moscow has vaulted into the game this year following the cessation of the USSR's conflict with Poland (who are on the short list of countries being considered for future expansions), which allowed them to play several pitchers and 2 starting outfielders who had been banned, lest they use the awesome power of Tesla's teleportation device for nefarious reasons. Was it that added protection that made Sergei Lenyashin so good? The camaraderie of similarly awesome teammates? Whatever the reason, the People's Hitter was absolutely unstoppable in May. He hit .436 with seven home runs, averaged more than a run scored and run batted in for the month, and reached base half the time he came to bat. Just amazing. Jonathan Simon, Canada's second baseman, is constantly being forgotten about by the sports reporters of the world. It's not that he's average or even merely good. It's just that he has so, so many teammates who shine in the limelight a little brighter. His lead-gloved Irish LF Mack Dwywy, scientific but always hurt 1B Tim Kinch, smooth-talking French Canadian CF Alexandre Maurice, speedy RF Ron Nock... who were we talking about again? Oh yeah. Jon Simon is a man whose primary offensive talent is his ability to take a pitch that falls outside of the strike zone. He's walked 152 and 110 times in the league's first two years. Walks are important but often they have the side effect of making the rest of a player's stats look not so impressive. This is why we think it is a particularly prescient move to award Simon the Batter of the Month award for May. He hit .386 for the month with a .530 on-base percentage. As awesome as Sergei Lenyashin? Maybe, in his own way.

Draft Day - June 15, 1921
(note: the original way of keeping up with the draft was too much to keep track of and, frankly, not what I really want to do with this league. I mean, it was a nice idea but if it's not automated it's just too much house-keeping. I'm arranging the team in order of their wins so far this year instead, although the first two rounds will have teams picking from their own country only. I'm also going to bring something in from my earlier league, and that's making historical peepls into baseball players. That *is* the kind of thing I want to do because it is very realistic and accurate. Also, I worked really hard before to find 2 players from each team in each category. Here I'm going to try to find 1-3 guys for every team, more if there are more dudes of that nationality represented in the birth year per Wikipedia, less if there aren't).
Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists ----------------- Ben Blue, SP - Canadian bandleader and comedian. Stop crying, Canadians! At least he is actually from your country, unlike the next guy. Vienna Musik ----------------- Jaroslav Seifert, LF - Nobel Prize winning Czech writer, poet and journalist. Given that Vienna is currently the only Eastern European country outside of Russia (Austria stretches the definition of "Eastern Europe" but you get the drift), they get Hungarians (part of the same empire up until the end of the Great War) or Czechs if available. Paris Revolutions ---------------- Jean Dubuffet, SS - one of the most famous French painters and sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. Chicago Defenders ---------------- Mule Suttles, OF - Negro League outfielder. Turkey Stearns, OF - Negro League outfielder, inducted into the real-life Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002. Amsterdam Admirals ---------------- Max Euwe, RF - Dutch chess Grandmaster, Mathematician, and author. He was the fifth player to become World Chess Champion (1935–1937). Euwe also served as President of FIDE, the World Chess Federation, from 1970 to 1978. Euwe was also a highly-regarded chess writer. Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, SP - Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958 until his assassination in 1966. Unlike his predecessors, Verwoerd was not born in South Africa, but immigrated at age two with his parents from the Netherlands. Tokyo Rising Sun ---------------- Emperor Hirohito, CL - the 124th Emperor of Japan. Brussels Painters ---------------- Leopold III, SP - reigned as King of the Belgians from 1934 until 1951, when he abdicated in favour of the Heir Apparent, his son Baudouin. Mexico City Aztecs --------------- Hunahpu (CL) and Xbalanque (CF) Maya - In honor of the Mayan independent state's capitulation to Mexico this year, the Hero Twins of Mayan mythology were discovered and cloned using the Tesla Device. The specifics are very complicated and not to be asked about for world security purposes. Shanghai Dragons ---------------- Chen Yi, LF - Chinese communist military commander and politician. Moscow Proletariat ---------------- Vasily Kalinnikov, SS - a Russian composer of two symphonies, several additional orchestral works and numerous songs, all of them imbued with characteristics of folksong. His symphonies, particularly the First, were frequently performed in the early 20th century. In recent years his fame has diminished but the symphonies are available in recordings. New York Giants ---------------- Ed Sullivan, P - American entertainment writer and television host, best known as the presenter of a popular TV variety show called The Ed Sullivan Show that was at its height of popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. Walt Disney, 2B - Multiple Academy Award-winning American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Disney is famous for his influence in the field of entertainment during the twentieth century. Art Rooney - The founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise in the National Football League. Cincinnati Reds ---------------- Clark Gable, P - an iconic American actor nicknamed "The King of Hollywood" in his heyday. Gable's most famous role was Rhett Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic film Gone with the Wind, in which he starred with Vivien Leigh. His performance earned him his third nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor; he had won the award for It Happened One Night (1934) and was also nominated for Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Gary Cooper, RF - An American film actor and iconic star. He was renowned for his quiet, understated acting style and his stoic, individualistic, emotionally restrained, but at times intense screen persona, which was particularly well suited to the many Westerns he made. London Monarchs ---------------- F.F.E. Yeo-Thomas, SP - The British Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent codenamed "The White Rabbit" during World War II. His particular sphere of operations was Occupied and Vichy France. Madrid Matadors ---------------- Joaquin Rodrigo, P - a composer of classical music and a virtuoso pianist. Despite being blind from an early age, he achieved great success. Rodrigo is considered to be among the composers most responsible for popularizing classical guitar music in the twentieth century, and his Concierto de Aranjuez is one of the pinnacles of the Spanish music and guitar concerto repertoire. This blindness is even more amazing given his baseball prowess. Rio de Janeiro Carnival ---------------- Suavoco do Cristo, CL - Portugese for "Christ's Armpit", this is the name of a prominent bloco in Rio de Janeiro. Blocos are a group of people who dress in costumes to celebrate the Carnival. This one is associated with the area around Rio's Botanical Garden. Athens Philosophers ---------------- Theseus, CF - Here's a guy who killed a minotaur. Surely he can play a little baseball. Also cloned using the Tesla Device. Berlin Teutonic Knights ----------------- Karl Arnold, OF - Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1947 to 1956. He was President of the Bundesrat and as such acting head of state of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, before the election of President Theodor Heuss. Rome Cardinals ----------------- Enrico Fermi, SS - Italian physicist most noted for his work on the development of the first nuclear reactor, and for his contributions to the development of quantum theory, nuclear and particle physics, and statistical mechanics. Sydney Outback ----------------- Gordon 'Nuts' Coventry, CL - Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League. With 1,299 goals over 18 seasons no football observer could deny that Coventry remains one of the greatest full forwards the game has ever seen. US Army Baseball Engineers ----------------- George Gallup, P - an American pioneer of survey sampling techniques and inventor of the Gallup poll, a successful statistical method of survey sampling for measuring public opinion. Maxwell Taylor, MR - American soldier and diplomat of the mid-20th century.
