If they do that though, why not stop players from playing in Spring Training? Gavin Lux blew out his knew and other players have been injured in getting ready for ST and WBC.

My hope is people don't overreact because this was a freak accident.

Kendrys Morales broke his leg from stomping on home plate a decade ago, was never the same afterwards, and people still do that, too......

He could have ripped up his knee stepping off the curb. Accidents happen. Injuries happen, even in spring training.

I LIKE the WBC, and every time you step onto a field, you are liable for injury. Silly to shut down an entire world-wide tournament because one player got hurt.

That was Jerry Blevins. Had his arm broken by a line drive in April, then tripped over a curb and broke it again in July. Pitched like six games all season.

Of course also with the Mets.

As Mets as it gets.

Actually, I think it was Bill Grammatica for the Cardinals. The kicker, I mean. CD out.

Yeah I think it might have been Automatica's little brother because I think that basically ended his career.

Apparently they had a third brother Santiago who kicked in college. The Zendejas brothers of the early 2000s I guess.

I read the bold as "kicked it in college" (as in, died) and thought, "Wow! Syd, that's harsh." Glad he only just kicked in college.

So, assuming it wasn't Lindor who made Boom-Boom's knee go boom, do we think it was a Mets rival who saw his chance and took out Diaz in the scrum? Damn, rough team.

And I must say I'm enjoying the WBC for bringing (semi-watchable) 2022-vintage baseball back. Yes, the accursed DH, but at least defensive positioning is still allowed. And even pickoff throws.

Noted Pinhead John Smoltz used every pick-off attempt in the USA-Colombia game to exposit about how awful baseball was and how great the new rules are going to be and how sweet Manly Manfred's feet taste when Suck-Up Smoltz licks them (I might have made that last bit up) and basically made me really appreciate Jason Benatti's skill on the previous night's telecast, when he used self-effacing humor to keep Smoltzie on track and get good stories out of him, as opposed to Empty Suit Joe Davis just sitting there and raptly listening to Pontificating Prick Smoltz pushing the propaganda.

Were I not already boycotting the sport until future notice (probably forever) and had I not cancelled my Extra Innings, Benatti and Steve Stone would be in the running for my "2nd-favorite broadcast team" honors. (GKR #1, of course.) Thank you, Jason.

The US team is starting to look pretty good.

When you have Turner hitting ninth, you've got a pretty good team.

I would love to see Japan in the final, and watch Ohtani get SMASHED by the US team.

The US team is starting to look like the OOTP US team that plays in the World Baseball tournament and just destroys the other teams made up mostly of temporary and minor league players. Isnt' exactly a great thing in the grand scheme of things. Let's see what kind of game Japan (or maybe even Mexico) can give them in the finals.

As president of the board's Shohei Ohtani Adoration Society, I am not amused!

Wow, that was some finish. The quality of Japanese ballplay, and their heart, continue to impress.

My thoughts exactly. I was talking to my wife about the dedication they have to the most fundamental things, as proven by giving a player with two strikes the green light to continue trying to move runners over with a bunt. Then he puts down a perfect bunt. Love watching Japan play. It's baseball in the most pure form.

He's a good player.

But..he's not the greatest player that ever lived, which I have seen floated up, MANY times.

The dude has a lifetime .267 average, and strikes out 31% of the time.

As a fielding pitcher, he's terrible. Eleven chances in 166 innings. Wainwright had 34 chances in 191 innings. It's like he doesn't even try to field his position.

Edit to add..I just checked about 15 random pitchers, with IP from 150-201. The LOWEST number of chances by anyone not named Ohtani was 28.

At this point, I would bunt Ohtani out of the league, until he shows me he knows how to take more than one step off of the mound.

Also Ohtani is dreamy and no man that beautiful can ever be a great pitcher! Not after Jim Palmer!
