WEEKLY THOUGHTS
Not a good week, going 2-5 to drop us to 20-29 on the season. We also droped to 28th in the power rankings. Our team ERA continues to suck, hovering at 6.57.

In transaction news, we released C Jason LaRue. Nobody wanted to trade for him, and I wanted him off the roster as soon as possible. He wasn’t even in the majors, instead playing in Omaha. $5 million is too much to be paying someone to play in Omaha. We added Omaha CF Jorge Padilla to the 40-man roster to take his place.

In other news, the coaches came to me and said de la Rosa has looked absolutely terrible. I watched him throw a bullpen session and he looks like he’s developed Rick Ankiel syndrome. In my anger I not only sent him down, I removed him from the 40-man roster. We recalled Jose Diaz from Omaha and added Wayne Franklin back to the 40-man.

Game #50 – Kansas City (Z. Greinke 2-7, 7.83 ERA) at Toronto (J. Thomson 0-4, 12.74 ERA)

Kansas City 4
Toronto 5
W: J. Thomson (1-4) L: Z. Greinke (2-8) S: B. Ryan (6)
HR – KC: D. Ross (8)

Our offense slept through most of the game, finally scoring 3 times in the 9th to make things interesting, but failing to get the tying run across. We even had 2 on with 1 out and Koskie and Spiezio, our two big bats, both struck out. Thomson pitched 8 innings for the Jays, giving up 1 unearned run on 5 hits and 2 walks, and he struck out 9.

TRADE PROPOSAL

Tim Purpura of the Astros called me again and again offered me first baseman Walter Young. This time all he wanted back was catcher John Buck. Now, Buck isn’t our starter, and I’m probably going to trade him soon, true, but I think I can get more for him then a first baseman that Houston is desperately trying to get rid of.

TRADE
The Pittsburgh Pirates sent 24-year-old starting pitcher Paul Maholm to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for 23-year-old minor league catcher Miguel Montero. This season Maholm is 1-9 with an 8.48 ERA. This trade doesn’t make much sense. Tampa Bay trades a decent catching prospect for a pitcher with an 8.48 ERA? Wow. Maybe Purpura should give Tampa Bay a call.

Game #51 – Kansas City (J. Bale 3-4, 5.95 ERA) at Oakland (D. Haren 4-4, 5.05 ERA)

Oakland 12
W: J. Duchscherer (2-2) L: J. Bale (3-5)
HR – KC: S. Spiezio (15) OAK: J. Gomes (12), N. Swisher (14)

Nick Swisher went 3-4 with a home run, 3 runs scored, 5 RBIs, and a walk to lead the A’s. Just another start where our pitching staff got rocked. It’s becoming an all-too-common scene. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix it, let me know.

It looks like if we’re going to win games lately, we’re going to have to score double-digit runs. We jumped out to a 7-1 lead, then gave it all away by giving up 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th. We scored 3 runs in the 7th and 1 in the 8th, and held on while Oakland scored a run in each of the 7th-9th innings. Mike Piazza of the A’s went 3-5 with a home run, a run scored, and 5 RBIs in the defeat. Esteban German is day-to-day for the next 4 days with a bruised jaw he suffered in a collision.

MONTHLY REPORT
Yep. That’s right. We went 9-21 this month. We’re 12-12 at home, but 9-20 on the road. Again, our hitting isn’t too bad, but we’re last in the AL (and probably the majors) in every pitching category except for strikeouts—we’re second in that category. It’s a sad thing when Jimmy Gobble has the team lead in ERA at 5.31.

In terms of our minor leagues, Alex Gordon slid another spot to third on our prospects list, as he is still struggling in Omaha. He is only hitting .208 with 7 home runs and 23 RBIs. Hopefully he can get out of his funk soon. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mark Rogers in the major league starting rotation in the next month or so. Even though his ERA isn’t great, I believe he is real close to putting it together. And if he struggles, well, he’ll fit in just fine up here.

The draft is the 15th, and it looks to be a fairly decent draft. One question to those of you tuning in: How early is it to draft a major league ready middle reliever? It looks like there are 2 of them available in this draft and I was just wondering how long I could wait before taking one (or both) of them. They don’t have the endurance to ever become starters, so I’d be taking strictly relievers.

AL Batter of the Month
1B Justin Morneau (MIN) .390, 12 HR, 44 RBI, 21 R

NL Batter of the Month
OF Carlos Lee (HOU) .339, 13 HR, 37 RBI, 27 R

AL Pitcher of the Month
Johan Santana (MIN) 5-1, 2.44 ERA, 48 IP, 50 K, .232 OBA

NL Pitcher of the Month
Randy Johnson (ARI) 5-0, 1.21 ERA, 52 IP, 9 BB, 44 K, .145 OBA

AL Rookie of the Month
SS Brandon Wood (LAA) .362, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 11 R, 5 BB, .400 OBP

NL Rookie of the Month
OF Mike Vento (WSH) .308, 7 HR, 22 RBI, 19 R, .345 OBP
Vento has won both Rookie of the Month awards this season.

CONTRACT EXTENSION

Jose Valentin and the New York Mets agreed to a 2 year extension worth $11,716,666 per year with a player option for the 3rd year. Not bad at all for a guy hitting .248.

TRADE

Florida sent 23-year-old starting pitcher Josh Johnson to the Houston Astros for 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Chance Douglass.

I’m not sure what Florida was thinking here. Big win for the Astros as they pick up a number 2 starter for practically nothing.

WEEKLY THOUGHTS
We had another sub-.500 week, going 2-4. On the bright side, Odalis Perez is looking a lot better. Unfortunately, he wants to test the free agent market. At least we should get some decent prospects for him.

We released 2B Mark Grudzielanek today. He wasn’t really doing much for us, as Clapinski has played most of the time at second.

We also removed Wayne Franklin from the 40-man roster to make room for reliever Steve Stemle, who we called up from Omaha along with our top pitching prospect, Mark Rogers. To make room for these two we sent Jose Diaz and Leo Nunez down to Omaha.

We called up 2B Donnie Murphy from Omaha to take Grudzielanek’s place on the active roster and added Wichita RF Dee Brown to the 40-man.

AL Player of the Week
1B Justin Morneau (MIN) .556, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 9 R

NL Player of the Week
1B Adam LaRoche (PIT) .450, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 5 R

RUMOR

Rumor has it that Dodgers left fielder Luis Gonzalez is not happy in Los Angeles and the Dodgers are shopping him around.

TRADE
The Cleveland Indians have sent 25-year-old shortstop Jhonny Peralta to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 24-year-old minor league second baseman Jermel Lomack and 22-year-old minor league catcher Jordin McPhedron.

TRADE
In their second deal of the day, the Indians sent 29-year-old starting pitcher Jake Westbrook to the Milwaukee Brewers for 21-year-old minor league center fielder Charlie Fermaint.

TRADE PROPOSAL
I declined Larry Beinfest’s—the Marlins GM—offer of Alex Gordon for shortstop Robert Andino.

Game #56 – Kansas City (J. Bale 3-5, 6.64 ERA) at Texas (K. Loe 2-9, 4.44 ERA)
Kansas City 2
Texas 3
W: S. Feldman (2-0) L: S. Stemle (0-1)
HR – TEX: K. Lofton (3), I. Kinsler (5)

We got off to an early 1-0 lead when German lead off the game with a triple and Gload brought him in. Bale gave up 2 in the third, but it could have been worse if not for the double play he got that still scored a run. We tied it up in the 7th after DeJesus got a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a groundout to the pitcher, and scored on a groundout to second. Unfortunately in the ninth, Stemle came in and got Piedra to fly out and Hyzdu to strike out before giving up the walkoff homer to Kenny Lofton.

Rogers pitched well in his first career start, going 5.1 innings and giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 3. Our offense didn’t give him any run support though, saving it for the 8th when we were down 6-0. We exploded for 8 runs in the 8th, but gave it back in the top of the 9th. Corey Koskie saved the day however, leading off the bottom of the 9th with a walkoff shot that still hasn’t landed.

RETIREMENT

Cincinnati Reds reliever Mike Stanton announced today he will retire at the end of the season.

This was a good pitchers’ duel. Greinke pitched a complete game, giving up 7 hits, including the 2 solo shots that accounted for Seattle’s only runs, and he struck out 2. Washburn was even better, however, pitching 8 innings and giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk and struck out 7. Hopefully we can put good pitching and hitting together in the same game one of these days.

TRADE

The Arizona Diamondbacks have sent 27-year-old reliever Brander Medders to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for 21-year-old minor league shortsto Reid Brignac. I’m not really sure what Tampa Bay is thinking here, as it’s not like they need to give up a decent prospect for that final relief piece to the puzzle to put them in contention. They’re about as bad as we are.

CONTRACT EXTENSION

The White Sox agreed to a 2 year, $19 million extension with starting pitcher Mark Buehrle.

Not a whole lot of offensive production, and it wasn’t because of excellent pitching. B.J. Upton was the player of the game, going 1-5 with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI. That he was the player of the game should tell you how good this game was.

WEEKLY REVIEW
A good week. We went 5-2 with a win over Texas, 2 over Seattle, and 2 over Tampa Bay. We also moved up to 19th in the power rankings. Our pitching is slowly starting to get better, and I can’t wait to see what this Rogers kid can do. The draft is in 5 days and I’m really excited to see what kind of players we can get.

In transaction news, we released reliever Wayne Franklin. He probably wasn’t going to make it back to the 40-man roster. For some odd reason, the fans were extremely angry that I released him.

AL Player of the Week
OF Manny Ramirez (BOS) .407, 2 HR, 6 RBIs, 7 R

NL Player of the Week
OF Luke Scott (HOU) .500, 1 HR, 13 RBIs, 6 R

TRADE

The Arizona Diamondbacks have sent 24-year-old starting pitcher Edgar Gonzalez to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for 22-year-old minor league center fielder Elijah Dukes. No word as to if Mrs. Dukes will be accompanying Elijah to Arizona.

To be perfectly honest, I have no clue how we won this game. We only had 2 hits, and Rogers left after only a third of an inning. He will be out 1-2 weeks with a finger blister. Oh well. I’ll take a series sweep any way I can get it.
