I also don't get the transfer windows. If you make a deal for a player and it's pretty much a done deal, you should have that player immidiately. Trade deadlines don't work in European football it seems like because the different league start and finish at different times.

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment:

If that were to happen, then what would prevent the MLS from ending up just like the old NASL? The current system, as flawed & restrictive as it may seem, is at least designed to keep the bigger picture in mind in terms of league financial health and maintaining slow but steady growth, occasionally bolstered by the league-approved acquisition of an international superstar (Beckham).

If MLS clubs were permitted to deal directly with European clubs, they would only think of themselves and not keep the overall health of the league in mind, which may lead to the same kind of excesses that ultimately doomed NASL.

At the same time, you can still have the MLS reject any deals made that doesn't have the long term interest in the league in mind. I understand the league has a lot of growing up to do but sooner or later you have to give the teams the freedom to make their own signings and their own moves instead of relying on MLS to bring in stars from Europe.

I absolutely agree with you. However, I don’t think that time is now. From what I understand, the league still isn’t profitable. So permitting teams to make unrestricted moves on their own at this juncture would only result in a greater disparity between the teams that are profitable now and the ones that aren’t. In the end, it’s difficult to believe that wouldn’t produce a carbon copy of the old NASL, where one or two teams were profitable while the rest of the league was in the financial tank.

Perhaps in a few years when most if not all MLS teams will be playing in soccer specific stadiums and making a little money the league will permit teams greater latitude in making transactions, but right now I think that would doom the league.

In essence we just have the agree to disagree. No matter what we're going to see bigger clubs (RBNY, LA Galexy, DC United) go after the bigger players regardless of if we see it now or 5-10 years from now. My issue with all of this is that MLS are just signing players and then distributing the players they sign to different squads instead of having the clubs actually try to earn the players. In a correct world, the 13 clubs in MLS would have a fight for David Beckham (or at least the clubs that want him), and whoever makes the best offer lands him as long as the contract fits in the salary cap and is eligible for the Beckham rule, simple as that.

I know I'm getting off topic here, but for the Brits who post here, I need to know some "good" british female pop acts. I know of Rachel Stevens, Girls Aloud and Atomic Kitten, but are there anything else that I can, well, do that thing men do?

It was a massive disappointment for the Dutch to not have made it to at least the Championship game with that batch of talent. France has beaten Brazil twice in the last WC amd, IMO, the Dutch team was better than France.

all 13 teams had a chance at Beckham, he was signed by LA on the designated player rule...he's their responsibility...he chose to play for LA and they chose to pay him.

Having some sort of quota system for American players, either by number on the field at any one time, or by minutes per season would help. Or having a two-tier league like the J. League.

I'd still like to know where that guy in the article thinks all these "showmen" players are coming from as well.

They only allow teams to have 5 foreign players on their roster...unless they've changed it in the last few years.
