1907 WORLD SERIES

9/27/1907 - GAME 1 GIANTS 2 - ATHLETICS 5

Eddie Plank and Christy Mathewson, both potential Aces of the Year for their respective leagues, locked horns in Game 1. The A's pulled it out with 2 RBI each from Napoleon Lajoie and Jack Hayden.

9/28/1907 - GAME 2 GIANTS 0 - ATHLETICS 1

Billy Milligan and Ed Walsh were each fabulous in their outing, but Milligan was just a little bit better as he allowed only 4 hits, shutting out the Giants.

9/30/1907 - GAME 3 ATHLETICS 7 - GIANTS 4

Jim St. Vrain was fine through 7, but he lost it in the top of the 8th, extending the A's rally with an error and a wild pitch. This would eventually lead to a 4 run inning and the 3rd win in a row for Philadelphia.

9/30/1906 - GAME 4 ATHLETICS 8 - GIANTS 5, 12 innings

Napoleon Lajoie broke open a 2-2 tie in the top of the 8th with an RBI double, but New York's Ty Cobb struck back with an RBI of his own in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings. It would last until the 12th when Lajoie had another double, this time with the bases loaded off of reliever Gene Ford, to cap off a 5 run inning. The Giants came back in the bottom half of the inning, but were only able to score 2 runs. They fell short and completed the Philly sweep.

1907 WORLD CHAMPS - PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS
1st Championship

SERIES MVP: Napoleon Lajoie - .389, 2 2b, 1 3b, 6 RBI

Wow, nice season out of my knuckleballer. What's with the sudden decrease in complete games though? 270 IP, only two CG?

It looks like his Endurance dropped to an 18 from a 20.

Awww.. Oh well. Can't argue with 19 wins and a sub 2.00 ERA.

One thing I forgot to mention, though. He now holds the record for K's in a season.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 8, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1908:
Napoleon Lajoie and his Athletics have the city of Philadelphia jumping. They have quickly replaced the Phillies as the darlings of baseball fans all over Pennsylvania. How quickly things change. Will they be just as fickle if the A's fail to repeat? The crown ids theirs to keep, but you can be sure that the Highlanders want to retake the top spot in the American league. It won't be easy to repeat. The National League champion New York Giants are eager for revenge as well. The humiliating sweep at the hands of the A's have them frothing at the mouth for a rematch. Ty Cobb is still improving, and their pitching staff is legendary. Destiny could be on their side. Baseball always likes a good story.

Prospect Watch: JOSE "BLACK DIAMOND" MENDEZ

Mendez is an accomplished pitcher already. He is more advanced than other prospects that have been profiled, so we expect him to be up in the majors rather soon. His pinpoint control is already highly developed, and his other talents should reach similar heights. Fans (especially female fans) call him "Black Diamond" for his impenetrable black eyes. Opponents say that he has a stare like that of a cobra about to strike. he will easily go wihin the top 2 or 3 picks in this year's draft.

Talents (Stuff/Control/Movement): 70/95/85
Current Ratings: 31/44/59

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 8, ISSUE 2

SEPTEMBER 25, 1908:
Unlike 1907, the Athletics came on strong and maintained a double digit lead all season long. Having the top offense in the majors certainly helps, especially with player/manager Napoleon lajoie winning another batting title with a .372 mark, quite high in this deadball era. The preseason favorite for their top competition was the Highlanders, but they never emerged, trailing Detroit and Washington most of the season. could the Athletics make it 2 in a row?

The Giants had an even better season than the A's, with a record-setting 104 wins. Their staff of Christy Mathewson, Ed walsh and Jim St. Vrain were unstoppable. Most notable was Walsh's subterranean ERA of 1.32...best ever in the modern era. How will anyone beat that? This showdown between the two juggernauts of each league should be much closer than last year's sweep.

PROSPECT WATCH

ROY HOBBS
: Hobbs finally had a full season after 7 years of being shuffled back and forth to and from the minors. He enjoys Cleveland, but the success of his old tea has him determined to prove them wrong.

WILL MILLER II: 1908 was nearly a duplicate performance of 1907...another Gold Glove. Just missing the All-Star team. And an inordinately high amount of K's. Scouts have predicted a batting title in his future, but he still has a way to go.

JOHN "HOMERUN" HEINZ: Heinz had a rough year. He broke his finger in April, and had a concussion in August from a collision at home plate. However, scouts hink that his power potential may have increased yet again! When this kid does come, we'll see something special.

Top Batters:
Napoleon Lajoie - .372, 84 RBI, 37 SB
Harry Lumley - .323, 88 RBI, 49 SB
Joe Tinker - .308, 85 RBI, 23 SB

Top Pitchers:
Ed Smith - 24-13, 2.92 ERA, 110 K
Eddie Plank - 19-9, 2.47 ERA, 108 K
Billy Milligan - 16-4, 2.37 ERA, 69 K

NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPION: NEW YORK GIANTS (104-50)

Team Batting Average: .267
Team ERA: 2.38

Top Batters:
Ty Cobb - .341, 82 RBI, 74 SB
Frank "Wildfire" Schulte - .291, 82 RBI, 58 SB

Top Pitchers:
Ed Walsh - 27-12, 1.32 ERA, 174 K
Christy Mathewson - 29-8, 2.24 ERA, 214 K
Jim St. Vrain - 25-8, 2.87 ERA, 179 K

The A's have the offense and the experience, not to mention the second best staff in the majors. On the other hand, the Giants have the best staff....by far. The triumvirate of Walsh, Mathewson and St. Vrain are the best rotation we've seen this century. It'll be tight, but those three are monstrous.

PREDICTION: Giants in 7

1908 WORLD SERIES

9/26/1908 - GAME 1 ATHLETICS 6 - GIANTS 5

The Giants outhit the A's 16 to 7, but 4 errors by the New York defense led to 5 unearned runs and a loss. Giants starter Christy Mathewson was unhappy, to say the least, and Frank Schulte's 4 hits were a wasted effort..

9/27/1908 - GAME 2 ATHLETICS 7 - GIANTS 4

Eddie Plank allowed only one eraned run and Pat Sentell had a career day, batting 4 for 5 with 4 RBI to put the A's up 2 games to 0. The Giants vaunted staff is reeling in dismay.

9/29/1908 - GAME 3 GIANTS 6 - ATHLETICS 0

Jim St. Vrain did his job by finally shutting down the A's scoring machine. Frank Schulte had another good game, this time in a winning effort, as he batted 2 for 5 with 3 RBI.

9/30/1908 - GAME 4 GIANTS 2 - ATHLETICS 5

Christy Mathewson started again and his defense let him down for the second time with 4 errors. He allowed no earned runs whatsover, but 5 still crossed the plate. For the Series, he is 0-2 with a 0.53 ERA!

10/1/1908 - GAME 5 GIANTS 4 - ATHLETICS 5

The Giants defense blew it again, this time with 5 errors. This is definitely something that needs to be addressed in the offseason. Rumors are circulating that they may have thrown the Series, but if they had....would they have been so obvious about it??

1908 WORLD CHAMPS - PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS
2nd Championship

SERIES MVP: Eddie Plank 2-0, 2.50 ERA, 11 K

Perhaps they should give it to the NY defense.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 9, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1909:
Two championships in a row make the Philadelphia Athletics the team to beat in either league. As we head into 1909, the Giants have to be pretty disappointed from losing after posting the best record this century. 104 wins is nothing to sneeze at, but it means nothing when you don't come away with the ring. Each team is the favorite in their league once again, but there should definitely be some competition. Most of the other teams are younger and improving. Can Philly and New York (N) maintain their dominance?

Prospect Watch: ALAN LIAO

Liao is certainly something to watch. He has a glove as soft as a baby's butt and knack for slapping ground balls and beating the throw to first. When he reaches his full potential, he will most likely be one of the top leadoff vatters in the game today. His only flaw is a tendency for nagging injuries. He doesn't seem to have a very high pain threshold. One day he'll be out with a blister on his heel. A couple weeks later he'll get a charley horse. We hope none of these little twinges impinge upon his game. These injury concerns may drop him out of the top couple slots in the draft.

Talents (Contact/Gap/HR/Eye/Avoid K): 110/76/30/80/50
Current Ratings: 38/56/23/33/44
